Sourcing just the engine would have still been a bit of a disappointment but to share a whole platform, trans, and interior wirh BMW is unacceptable. Its just not a Toyota at this point.
Hmm 1jz and 2jz both were designed in part by yamaha 1jz actually has it stamped on the head. Likewise the top of the line manual transmission the getrag unit was used in the skyline gtr eventually as well as the supra .so its not that different from what is usually done.
It's not a Supra, they are only banking on the legendary name of the Supra and the hype that surrounds it, laughing all the way to the bank. Marketing at best.
They arent banking on the name. The A80 wasn't a profitable car and the A90 won't be for the same reason. That's why Toyota cheaper out in development costs by getting parts from BMW.
I also don't understand why Toyota cant do what Chevy has been doing with the LS Engine and just add some modern tech to the overall basic design of the 2JZ. Then they also could have sourced the chassis from an already developed Lexus Chassis and thrown some ISF drivetrain in it.
You guys can defend it all you want but I dont see anyone getting in line to buy a BMW with a Toyota badge on it. You can defend their choices but at the end of the day it's a BMW and the only ones accepting this crap are BMW fanboys who happen to like the Supra
For real tho, BMW makes lot better Inline 6. While Toyota haven't made any in past years. You think they can just make Inline 6 and beat BMW's Inline 6 in one attempt? That's questionable.

Your last comment there, are you actually a Toyota owner or collector because im not a kid on the internet talking shit im a real Toyota collector of many cars and I am telling you, you're wrong, Toyota and Ford are the only companys who give a flying fuck what you think as a consumer just because they try to keep it affordable for the consumer, they cant always justify spending 50$ more to charge the consumer 1500$ more and so sometimes they will downsize mercedes for example, yes their engineers design EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT TO but when they spend 50$ it costs you 5,000....check and mate I also work for Ford, lunch time :)
MK4, you dumbazz! Toyota doesnt need to make a supra to make money. their cars are already making enough revenues for them especially the Corolla qnd rav4. Be glad that Toyota even came out with a supra and fr-s to begin with
When did supra become a track legend? People acting like the old supra was competing with GTR and nsx in terms on handling which is not true at all. Supra had a crazy engine and was amazing in going straight. Nothing could really beat it. This is a sports car with help from BMW, who arguably makes the best driving car. E30 m3, e46m3, e92m3, 1m, M5/m6. BMW knows how to make inline 6, their bread and butter. And they know how to make a good chassis. Although it's unfortunate Toyota couldn't be more independent, but people need to understand that's it's a business. And most car enthusiasts are cheap assholes who talk shit about new cars but only buy used cars and wonder why car companies aren't putting more money sport car development. Bring back the 2j?? Are you stupid?? Iron block, laggy, inefficient, much more pollution. But it makes 1000hp, lol stfu.
So much stupidity and ignorance in this video and in these comments. You all need to let go of that corny movie car image and "legacy" of the Supra. You guys also realize that you're killing the likely hood of future projects like this from happening right? Why would any company waste the time, money and resources to fund a project that the "enthusiasts" crowd is just going to trash and not support. It's self sabotage.
@BingBong Boopledoop what's going to end up happening is that no car manufacturer will want to make sport cars anymore, outside of that ones that only do that of course
Celica wasn't really good but it really wasn't bad. I have one, its super reliable, I haven't modded it. I think this car would be a better fit for the comeback car
imo overall it looks terrible, shorter than the FRS which is short already, plus bmw flat interior, generic tail lights instead of getting inspiration from the mk4 iconic circle tails, etc etc
@@SteveOnlin the car is not out yet, we dont know if it handles better or not. But by your logic the shorter the wheelbase the better it handles, so a mini cooper can kill the new supra.
The new Z4 isint a joke. If Toyota made the platform, engine or transmission in house the car would cost wayyyyy more. It sucks that they don't have a Manual Option (at least confirmed) but the BMW ZF 8 Speed is a great transmission.
Toyota has built 1 of the BEST INLINE 6 CYLINDER ENGINE ON THE PLANET. Toyota could USED the last GENERATION SUPRA ENGINE AND UPGRADE IT. THEY COULD HAVE BUILT THEIR OWN CAR AND ENGINE. BMW / TOYOTA SUPRA IS DISAPPOINTING.
Izat Izat The cost of development for even an upgraded 2jz would be so high that it could send Toyota bankrupt if it didn’t meet the sales. Not only that but the price tag on the supra would be much higher than what is expected starting $49k you’d be looking at 90k that’s never been Toyota’s target audience. Name another car manufacturer that would have been a better partner developer for this? I’ll wait.
I don't understand WHY so much people are crying about the Mk V Its way 20 years ago that Toyota dropped the mk4 on market and they're wondering that the supra " iS nOT tHE sAmE mimimiiii" because it hast alot of parts from the BMW Z4 Why are not alot people crying about the gtr r35 that has nothing to do with a Skyline only the rear lights? Good info man. Just today some leaked photos came out and looks better than I thought. My feeling is this might be a good car and looks to have some interesting features, but is not a Supra in the historical sense. For the money, I ordered a 2019 ZL1 instead of this.
I think far to many forget the mki to mkiii. The mkiv looks nothing like any of them in any way. Yes the Mkiv is iconic but it doesn't have to look the same.
Here's a long message to those who are blindly criticizing this new Supra just for the sake of it. So much so that it's actually being split into 2 comments in this reply chain (sadly due to the character limit): I know I've said this millions of times already, but I'll say it again. To those of you uneducated freaks with no knowledge complaining that this new Supra won't end living up to the MKIV's hype: *Deal with it.* *The MKIV was NEVER the true sports car you guys thought it was.* It was simply a grand tourer type vehicle. Not really that good, visceral, or drift-happy at corners, and its driving experience felt rather decently fun at best and boaty at worst. While it's still a memorable classic and a great vehicle, it wasn't GTR-levels of hardcore at all (not even in the level of Toyota's own GT86, which its development story was a literal fight between Tada-san and Subaru (the company that Toyota actually owns about 17% of) to create it, although Toyota did develop everything else other than 50% of the engine (Subaru developed the other 50% of the engine on the other hand) and the manufacturing process that we'll get to later, when it comes to a hardcore, jewel driving experience), *and it was known better as a tuner's halo car* (that's right, it was YOU FUCKING PEOPLE who made the Supra into some kind of supercar killer by tuning the hell out of it as much as possible, even though it never was at first despite it being a decent amount of fun). And that happened during the 1990's, when a Honda NSX could go head-to-head with a Mitsubishi Lancer, Mazda RX-7 and Toyota MR2, because of horsepower limits and Japan-oriented market strategy. Today, Japanese manufacturers changed completely, and they're focusing on Crossovers and SUVs, if all. (hell, at least be grateful to see Toyota having the balls to bring out a sports car and something appealing in a world where nothing but SUVs are dominating automotive industries day after day. So much so that Toyota even brought out an all-new, redesigned, yet otherwise almost perfect, Avalon lately!) The original Supra (in its first and second generations) was nothing special. It was a pretty bland and standard start of its life when it in fact, actually started its life as a sportier, bigger and more luxurious version of the Celica, if you go that far. *What saved the Supra were the tuning and customization markets.* This car looks, sounds very interesting and appears to be very competent and with equipment that is very up-to-date with today's market (sorry, manual transmission lovers), so it probably won't flop like the NSX did lately.....especially when Toyota had no choice but to collab with BMW to reduce development costs to make the car more profitable and help keeping costs down for the consumer while sharing costs with another automaker (BMW on this occasion) within manufacturing plants, which is why BMW asked Toyota to co-develop the car. All BMW did was supply the chassis (which Toyota then enhanced the rigidity, suspensions, structure, etc their own way), the powertrain (which Toyota then tuned in their own way), and some parts then fucked off. So given the fact that Toyota and BMW haven't interacted with each other for years now during the development process, it's clear that the Supra and Z4 will be different cars for the vast majority (especially while it may share only 6 similar hardware components with the Z4, it is still considerably different all due to the different software). Let alone that BMWs straight-six motors are some of the best in the industry, and the B58 in itself is pretty much the German equivalent of the 2JZ (and the Supra itself is known for having a straight-six motor anyway) and has massive tuning potential like the 2JZ, but Toyota didn't actually just take it straight from BMW and called it a day, when they enhanced, customized, tuned, and supplied it how they wanted it to be, consisting of Toyota's feel and soul. So the car will pretty much end up being more Toyota than BMW for that matter, which in the end, doesn't qualify as badge-engineering since for one everything should be identical for it to be rebadged, and two the tuning, customization, and enhancements are done in Toyota's own way for the powertrains, suspensions, electronics, structure, power-to-weight distribution ratio, platform, rigidity, throttle response, etc, while also supplying the software, coding and programming, and also, just basically the overall package. *To summarise it more simpler, the new Supra and Z4 have shared engines and platforms that have been independently been developed, so the cars are still different, the new Supra however consists of Toyota's touch.* On top of all of that, the car has an exceptionally well developed chassis and will be quick from the factory (as opposed to the prior Supra that was a fun car but was in no possible way, shape or form some kind of supercar killer. It's tuners, *in fact, you fucking people,* the ones who made the MKIV a supercar killer. You stupid fanboys/fangirls have no fucking clue). So, again, the upcoming Supra *is still a Toyota overall, feels like one, and is still a Supra, but re-imagined, and is NOT a Z4 in disguise, nor is it a rebadged BMW either* (read this entire paragraph as to why BMW even asked Toyota to jointly develop the car, despite the two automakers claiming that they have developed and refined their cars separately in their own way).

The last Z4 wasn't doing well with sales. I don't see how a Toyota at $50K will sell that many. Especially since on paper it's going to look like an over priced 370Z. I'm sure it'll be faster than a 370Z, but for an extra $20K that is going to be a hard sell I think because people don't look at Toyota the same way people look at BMW. It's hard for a Toyota to command a sticker price that high and not be on the same performance levels as the other non-luxury car models out there.

Your fucking "legendary" Supra is only searched after because of its engine, which people dont seem to realise is also in other models and some Lexus's, the thing handles like a boat, is almost 4000 lbs, and was sold mostly with the auto because it was A FUCKING GT, IT WAS MEANT TO BE A LUXURIOUS, POWERFUL CELICA, NOT THE F&F MACHINE OF WHICH EVERYONE MAKES A SHITSHOW OUT OF AND PRAISES
Im getting so sick of these comments, people forget The Toyota supra was the slowest around the track out of its JDM rivals at the time, even slower then the standard WRX, The chief engineer worked on the original Supra, second the supra was ONLY developed to compete with the 350z ( not the GTR ) Third the amount of money Toyota Invested in this to appease fans that probably cant afford this or the original back in the day ,they likley wont make any money on this hence why they had to partner with BMW to make it viable for Tada-san to even get it passed into production, he clearly explained there was no Reliable Manuel trans to handle the torque delivery from the tune they wanted and would most likely be SLOW AF with a Manuel trans and watch people bitch about that.
@@doosrah8029 The last gen was built in 2002 the same year as the 350z previously the supra or toyota celica was made to compete with the previous gen Z cars
@///AMG Toyota will never ever produce their own inline 6cyl ever again so i dont know where you get that from, the supra will likely be discontinued at the same time as the Z4. and this car is significantly better and faster then the previous Gen supra and the Engine is completely forged and built with better traits then the 2JZ.
the b58 motor in the new supra has come from from the new m240i With stock internals some guy in england is already making 630+ WHP. Also there would NOT be a new supra at all if they didnt team up with BMW. Another factor to think of is the GT-86 a car that although totally not the same as its predecessor completely captured the essence of the ae-86. New supra and GT-86 are both design children of the same engineer. In all honesty, people who rave about mkiv supras dont seem to remember the MKIII MKII or MKI supra

True. They do care the Mark IV, but didn’t care the previous Supras. Without them, the Mark IV wouldn’t exist.
It’s a Z4 with a ricer look The B58 it not a easy tunable engine done on purpose by BMW. Dinan and Burger Motorsport both have said it’s one of the hardest to map. Dinan is the only aftermarket shop to have Fully map The B58 and certified by BMW to remap and tune without voiding the warranty. Even this tuned down version with 325 hp is 3300 pounds. It’s strange the new Supra has the same dimensions and weight as my Turbo S. This will be fun to drive .
The still sell factory 3.0 toyota blocks I think. No engine available . LOL. Maybe they can't pass newer emissions testing. Would have been better to forge a camry 3.5 and turbo it. Done. I pity da fool.
I don't see what the big problem with it is. It looks good, very good imo. They kept it as "Supra" as they could get it. This ain't the 90s anymore so it's not like they can just remake the mark 4 body and engine again. I'm just glad they aren't doing the Mitsubishi route.
I agree the performance could be there. Won't top the new Corvette C8 mid-engine though but the world of v8 is quite different than Japanese cars. Acura NSX is pretty cool.

1. Cost to much money for R&D for a new in-line motor that meets modern fuel and emission requirements for a car that isn’t gunna sell much. 2. BMW makes the best modern inline motor so it would only make sense to keep cost down. 3. The price is a little high but about right. Supras at their peak where 50k+ in the 90s. 4. The Supra came with about 280hp from Japan and 320 American specs so the power figure is right. 5. Only complaint I have is the lack of a manual trans, I’m pretty sure the z8 or that inline 6 variant was offered in a Manual so I don’t understand why they didn’t include it
@Dat Boii Then they wont even have sales, about 30-40 people would buy it, also the first years it has confirmed to be sold in limited amounts, not massively
This should have had the 2j from the 1998 supra with newer emissions equipment, who cares how old the engine is if still works, take a look @ how long Subaru has used their ej boxer engines over the years. horrible mistake not fully building their flagship sports car on their own. they could have built it on a Lexus chasis and thrown in a nice twin turbo V6 and no one probably would have minded, I don't hear the GTR guys crying about the VR38DETT ... Toyota has Totally disgraced itself and insulted Lexus.....
Yes they did. GayRod Supra is a pos. FT-1 Concept was absolutely gorgeous all around, in and out, even the fkn mirrors. The Supra name was slapped on a miata people somehow have the problem with. It's not that. It's that they ruined a chance of having the FT-1 on the road. It means Future Toyota-1, but using an old, outdated, dead Supra name isn't so future I can see it now "Woah, cool Miata, bro!"
its a bmw with the next get 86 body toyota F up by doing two things #1 calling it supra #2 making the FT-1 FT-1 is what everyone wanted as the supra ! this going to be like the NSX a fail , a good car but a fail the names are too much for the new cars also there is no need for it to have a inline 6 engine look at the R35 with the V6 no one was mad about it Toyota is just milking the name ! and they didn't to crap they payed BMW to get all the working parts and got gazoo to make concept race body for a 86 and put all the BMW parts in it ! A90 don't even have the shape of the dashboard from the A80 when the FT-1 did ! that guy with glasses F up everything !

I’m only 20. The MK4 Supra has always been my ultimate dream car. I’ve always wanted to own one and put all the new features in it. Then a couple of years ago I heard about this car. Tbh sure it could be better. But I still love it. You have to understand that there will be nothing like the late 90s supras and this is a car coming 20 years later. It’s going to be a lot different because cars are now different. Definitely going to purchase one probably early 2020
It reminds me of the z4 e86 coupé, except that the old z4 would look better with some minor refreshing facelift. Then the old supra with a facelift would also look better than the new version.
the B58 engine was Co developed with Toyota, it has forged pistons, forged piston rods, forged crank shaft and a closed deck block for plenty of tunable power, the new supra is going to make all you haters eat your words!! so go back to driving your shit box and get some facts instead of talking crap, thank you...
A lot of car revival models are like this. The GT86 uses a Subaru engine, and the new Passport is basically a smaller Pilot. Those are two good examples I thought of.
The Supra was compromised for many reasons and that is why the car looks and performs in a compromised manner. Shame on you Toyota. The only positive is rwd and 50/50 balance. It's no Supra. Let's go Mazda now is your chance to bring us a rotary sportscar to show Toyota how its done
people would have paid 100k+ for a all toyota parts and design supra, with a new toyota designed engine and atleast dct tranny, just like people pay 150k for the R35 GTR, so cutting costs is a bs reason to not just develop the car yourself, no one wants to pay 70-80 to not get a true supra.
I'll stick with my 98 supra. The mk5 is a failure in every way other than exterior looks. You can't modify it because of the integrated electronics, the drivetrain is made by those who should not be named, and it's got the same power as a ford focus.
What the fuck.....there is only true Supra.....the 90s Supra that is....that new thing they call Supra looks like an upgraded Miata.....its like a $200 million movie that flops in one week.....

Um Yes they could of kept the M4 body and everyone would be happy, all you would have to do is slightly modify it to modernize it. You know how like when ford went back to modernize the classic look of the mustang and everyone loved it? C'mon they could of definitely made us happy.

Ooooh yes! This would be an awesome car to be named Celica
Celica was also a good car but still Supra here didn't make any sense to me they could have brought a new 3jz engine.
Celica wasn't really good but it really wasn't bad. I have one, its super reliable, I haven't modded it. I think this car would be a better fit for the comeback car
The CELICA did a Fusion with AE86.. to get the GT86

"Did Toyota Ruin The 2020 MKV Supra?"
No, BMW did.
Here's a long message to those who are blindly criticizing this new Supra just for the sake of it. So much so that it's actually being split into 2 comments in this reply chain (sadly due to the character limit):
I know I've said this millions of times already, but I'll say it again. To those of you uneducated freaks with no knowledge complaining that this new Supra won't end living up to the MKIV's hype: *Deal with it.*
*The MKIV was NEVER the true sports car you guys thought it was.* It was simply a grand tourer type vehicle. So much so that Toyota even brought out an all-new, redesigned, yet otherwise almost perfect, Avalon lately!)
The original Supra (in its first and second generations) was nothing special.

It’s going to be a lot different because cars are now different. Definitely going to purchase one probably early 2020
It reminds me of the z4 e86 coupé, except that the old z4 would look better with some minor refreshing facelift. Then the old supra with a facelift would also look better than the new version.

Can Toyota mechanics fix BMW engines? Pretty sure these new Supra will be in the shop due to the BMW engine.
Um Yes they could of kept the M4 body and everyone would be happy, all you would have to do is slightly modify it to modernize it. You know how like when ford went back to modernize the classic look of the mustang and everyone loved it? C'mon they could of definitely made us happy. The moment I saw the prototypes I lost all hopes for a new true Supra.
They should have partnered with GM for a LS7/T56 drivetrain. Not like it would disappoint as much as this
Wah wah wah! Everyone complaining about this car!. I think it looks amazing and good luck to anyone who wants to place a order when it opens up! I guarantee these will be sold out in max at least two days! Just watch!!!!!
Someone please help me understand why the 2JZ just couldn't be modernized? Toyota didn't have to re-invent the wheel. They already have the wheel.
Bmw is good choice only thing they fucked up should of used dual clutch transmission 6MT most can’t wait getrag trans with 2jz swap
New Supra garbage. My puny Honda Fit will smoke this piece of shit at the track. Who makes these decisions at Toyota?
Thank you I thought I was the only one that didn’t like how short it looks
The wheel base is way to short. Just doesn’t look right at all.
Shortening the wheelbase makes the Toyota Supra handle better. It's the handling upgrade from the Mark IV Supra...
Its smaller because the previous aupra was absolute BOAT to drive stock more a grand tourer then a sportcar it gave you wonky floaty ride because it was so heavy
TOYOTA IS NOT GOING TO MAKE ANY MORE SPORTS CAR, FOR THE GT86 THEY ASKED SUBARU TO DO ALMOST EVERYTHING AND FOR THE SUPRA THEY CALL BMW, GTFO ASIAN MARKET IS ONLY USEFUL FOR DAILY BASIS HOME APPLIANCES LMFAO
Did Toyota Ruin The 2020 MKV Supra?.....eeeeerm NO....BMW DID!!!
It will sell it has the supra name ... Who doesn't like... Don't buy it there shouldn't be an argument over this
Mk4 ==> supra 2020
Just like
Ae86 ==> GT86
:(
OK at least not like
Coupe eclipse ==> SUV eclipse
When you get the DSC, ABS and Brake lights on the MKV supra, are you going to take it to Toyota to fix it?
Mercedes also has an inline-6 and the BMW b58 is nowhere close to the 2jz in design and durability.
Let’s face it... it’s whack. 💁🏾♂️
So long to Toyota Sports Cars.
