This movie is absolutely one of the best movies I’ve ever seen regardless of Godzilla, but his inclusion and characterization between his behaviors and design just make him a true terror and a visual spectacle. The scene where Koichi freaked out and had a moment where he was screaming everyone is a ghost and he’s already dead was for me actually almost too realistic. Honestly because I’ve felt such similar emotions to Koichi in my life, and I’ve had similar panic episodes and experiences, it felt very real for me with how he was clearly completely overwhelmed with emotions and thoughts in his panic

I love how Goji's design is a mix of classic Godzilla and Legendary Godzilla. It kinda gives you the idea that they took something that worked in the American version of Goji and incorporated in their own.
When I saw Minus One for first time I wasn't expecting to feel for the humans at all, the soundtrack definitely helped too (especially the third act, I was jumping in my seat) . This movie was the second time I can remember being absolutely speechless during a film. Right before Godzilla fires his beam at the ships (you know what scene), all sound drops out, and the theatre was dead quiet. 10/10
I wish my theater had been dead quiet. There was one asshole that had to keep talking enough that one of the other moviegoers had to yell at him to shut up. Really ruined the gravitas of that scene.
I went with my wife who doesn't really care for monster movies, she went because I do and she wanted to spend time together. During that scene she clutched my arm so hard and muttered the most dreaded "oh no" under her breath. We've paid to see the movie twice, it was that good. They really knew how to use silence and how to make us care about the people, not just the monster
Minus one is genuinlly my favorite Godzilla movie for the simple reason that, it went back to the true roots of what Godzilla was. Not just an allogory for war, or a sci-fi monster movie. A tragedy. In this age of movies we glorify the war, the heros both real and fiction. We cheer when the enemy is defeated we clap when the heros climb out of the rubble and fight on. Yet here we don't see that. We see the ordinary man the people who are burried in the destruction and dont get back up. The orignal Godzilla never glorified the destruction it made it tragic, it made every death on and off screen matter. The mechanics who we're never meant to fight. The mother looking for her children. The soldier that chose a "cowardly" escape over a "heroic" death. Godzilla symbolizes the tragedy of not just war but of being the victims of war. The ones back home who don't affect the outcome the ones turned to numbers when counting the bodies left behind. Even Godzilla a normal animal last of his kind soon to die, is turned into a unkillable creature made immortal and destructive by a weapon of a war he was never apart of. In essence we have a film about the victims who survived trying to live past their tragedies. Three orphans who rather than be stuck in their loss, grow past it. Forming a familly to endure and live. Superhero movies and action movies glorify destruction the explosions the high energy. Yet how often due we see the people on the sidelines? The people who worked in the destroyed buildngs, the familly that lives in that now burning house. Rarely do we see this. Yet Minus One shows this in a broad display of the tragedy of surviving a conflict you never truly had a choice in. In the end its these ordinary people who have to face Godzilla, survivors of a war they nearly lost everything in, being forced to stand up against somthing unbeatable. Fighting to live not to the death. In my opinion thats what makes Minus one such a beautiful film, the tragedy of losing everything in a war you didnt have a choice in, balanced with the hope of building somthing new with what you have left. The greatest Godzilla film in my opinion.
I really like the direction on how Toho directed two of their Godzilla solo movies Shin Godzilla and Minus One. They are like parts of the original 1954 Godzilla's heart and soul. Where Shin represents Godzilla's tragedy as a monster, just as Ishiro Honda said but at the same time the amount of pain he brought to mankind. Minus One here focus on the more human story of it and how much destruction and despair brought into people where Godzilla is clearly the main problem like a sort of natural disaster being brought to life.
I was honestly blown away at this movie for a multitude of reasons. Minus One was amazing in every sense and I'm so glad that even now, people still love it and are watching it. :) I will say, if Jobby enjoyed Minus One and Final Wars (also my favorite aside from the OG) as much as he did, I think he'd really enjoy GMK as well. Hope he checks it out someday if he hasn't already.
Really dug the monsters design in this one as well. When he was standing straight up, he looked a little goofy, but when hunched even a tiny bit, absolute peak Goji.
Hearing Minus One becoming as great as the first, it got me even more interested. I remember being just a fan of Godzilla as the monster, but when trying out the first movie, I absolutely loved it and made me cry because it had me drawn to the humans.
I wasn't a huge Goji fan, but this movie...omg, I do recommend it heavily. One thing I noticed that is rather subtle(and probably just me reading too much into things) is the connection between Koichi and Godzilla. All the way back to when they first encounter one another on Odo Island Beach, it seemed like the two were weird reflections of one another, both scarred by war and angry about it, to the point of trying to kill whatever is causing their problems just to get the pain and trouble to stop. I swear, when Godzilla turned to Koichi's plane on the beach, he was looking right at Koichi, as if saying "Try it. You might actually have some balls if you do..." I swear they were tied together in some twisted fate shit, it's so cool, especially if you look back at prior scenes with that context in mind. Also, Godzilla was so creepy in this one and I love it!
Awesome video Jobby. I agree with most of your opinions and insights. I grew up with Godzilla, he was my hero as a kid and emotional support while I had cancer. So Godzilla is a huge part of my life more so than most other people. I tend to tear up anytime I see Godzilla in pain or especially when he dies….Godzilla vs Desotroyah is avoided at all costs. Minus 1 is up there for me but my favorite G movie is Godzilla vs Biollante. If you haven’t seen it I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a mandatory watch. Just make sure to watch 54 and 84 first. Thanks for all the great content Jobby!
Saw this movie twice in theater and I have to saw, it's one of my favorite Godzilla movie of all time. I went into this movie the first time, expecting some thing, and coming out getting so much more than I thought I would. I love this movie and I would love to go see it again. The movie inspired me to write my own story almost like godzilla. But different.
I absolutely loved this Godzilla movie. I've paid to see it twice now, might go again. You're right about the overacting in that one scene kind of taking you out of it but at least it was brief. The score was great, the story was great, the acting was (mostly) great. I loved the design of Godzilla and you could see the disdain and utter disregard for human life in his expressions. The monsterverse movies are fun, sure, but this is what greatness looks like.
This movie honestly has become my favorite Godzilla movie and it made me have to separate the Godzilla films into two groups, being cgi and tokusatsu movies because I liked it better than Godzilla against mechagodzilla which shocked me.
That image of Godzilla saying "I'll f*ckin' do it again" pretty much sums up the Big G in this movie entirely. It was also the only thing I knew about the movie because I didn't even know it was a thing until it was out.
I didn’t mind the over-acting, mainly because I didn’t really notice. I also loved the emotional beats. This is the only movie I’ve watched in the past few years that I actually cried at. Akiko was just too much for me to handle, I felt so bad.
This movie easily slots into the top 3 Godzilla movies of all time, next to KotM and Shin. Everything about it is a 10/10. It's also the only Godzilla movie to make me fully break into tears, whereas KotM merely got me well up, maybe shed a single tear. Also, I never thought Toho would be able to top Shin's Atomic Breath, but they found a way to make it even more devastating. Combined with the Monarch show and the upcoming GvK sequel, it continues to be a very good time to be a Godzilla fan. 😁
I think my favorite godzilla movie is godzilla 2014 because of how they put the camera where the people are on their level so you can see and feel the height and weight of the monsters. Essentially, godzilla, when he first comes on land with the tsunami coming in when he comes on land and the footstep in front of the airport, then the roar ooooh soo good.
Been watching Godzilla films my entire life. Seen every single one, the undisputed favorite of mine has always been the original 1954 film. Minus One to my shock and surprise dethroned it as my favorite.
So the movie takes place before 1954 (it takes play in 1945-1946) so the ending of the movie (spoilers) when he regenerates sets up the 1954 movie. So that’s why it’s called Godzilla minus one
The scene between the two main characters with the heavy dialogue that you referenced was one of my favorite scenes of the movie - it REALLY worked for me!
Very rarely am I late to the party on a movie with such high critical praise, yet still find myself enjoying it despite my raised expectations. But when I say this movie blew me the fuck away, I mean that Shikishima is literally crying for me right now.
Finally saw it this evening, took until the 15th before it released here in the UK, probably my film of the year and my favourite Godzilla film. I knew it was a great sign when it was approaching the third act and it hit me, I was at no point during the film waiting for Godzilla to show up. The human characters and their story was more than compelling enough to keep me invested, and that's what came first. Godzilla serves the story of the film, rather than the story relying on him as I feel some other films do. I don't have much to say about it that hasn't already been said, my jaw was on the floor for most of it. The Godzilla sequences I felt were all really well done, they were simple yet refreshing, a lot of the camera work I found to be really effective during moments where he's attacking something, whether it's up close shots of the carnage or longer takes holding on the damage he's inflicting. I also liked the use of the original roar, in Shin Godzilla there were times where I felt it sounded out of place as an older sound effect, here the slight adjustments they made really gave it the feel of a deafening horrifying thing to hear.
I was planning to see this movie by myself, but last minute my dad asked me if he could join (cool, fun guy, but still a bit of a boomer, not a fan of subtitles). To my surprise, he really enjoyed it and loved the story and characters. So yeah, amazing movie that’s so well done and pretty deep that’s great for not just Godzilla or movie fans, but something anyone can get into.
I absolutely loved this movie. A phenomenal experience all around but I still say shin Godzilla is still my favorite. I know I’m weird I like the government plot. I think it was well handled and I was always interested in seeing how it responded to the changes Godzilla underwent. It felt real in that sense for better and worse
It was a very refreshing Godzilla experience. I really like the monsterverse but its clear they mainly just rely on the monster fight scenes to draw in their viewers since the overall plot and human characters are poorly written or very basic. None of them really have any memorable moments. Godzilla minus one had incredible human characters that for me, were as equally engaging as godzilla. And the limited screen time of Godzilla was used very effectively, giving his appearances meaning and impact. Also just doing a good job of making Godzilla intimidating again which is something that i feel the monsterverse has lost since 2014. Hes very cool in those movies, but he feels more like an action star rather than the force of nature they try to portray him as, whereas minus one godzilla truly encaptured the fear of nuclear warfare and the horror that follows. All in all, minus one is a very well written and amazing movie, for both casual viewers and longtime fans of the character and franchise. Also, for me being a Godzilla fan since I was 3 years old in Australia, I never got to see any of the Japanese Godzilla films in theatres for obvious reasons. So seeing the classic toho logo that I fondly remember seeing on my parents old box tv and hearing THE Godzilla theme on full blast in theaters genuinely had a few tears of joy escape me. Made me feel like a little kid again.
I never thought I would see you not only another toy reviewer with the same opinion as me on Final Wars, but also on Minus One! Much respect my man, keep on rockin!
I saw it in 4dx it was AWESOME At the beginning of the movie when godzilla was chomping people in half the backrest of the seat hits your back imitating feeling bitten in half it was insane
Something that rattled me when watching this movie was just how much focus there was on the loss of life as a result of Godzilla. Seeing people get crushed by debris, seeing them get crushed under Godzilla's foot, seeing them get crushed in his jaws, getting blown to bits by his atomic breath, all of it is genuinely scary to see. Seeing the deaths from the perspectives of the people dying just holds more weight than it did before
I saw this movie a few days ago, and I think that you perfectly described the theme of the movie without spoiling it and honestly I hope that this serves as a wake up call to the monsterverse. But if i were to rank all the modern godzilla movies this would actually be my second favorite movie beaten only by an inch by shin godzilla.
Hey my dude, just saw DnD shorts do a vid on Jocat and I wanted to kinda reach out, let you know I really love your vids and look forward to them. Your a great content creator and I hope you realize that. Keep being you and then some.❤
I personally love the B-movie G-films, so Final Wars is definitely high on my list. G Minus One though is a completely different type of film. No camp, no comedy: this is a dead serious human drama. The human centered story was so moving and made me cry more than once both in sadness and in joy. It is now my favorite G-film and easily the best movie of the year.
When I heard about the film being released and saw the trailer twice, one being a teaser and then the other being a full trailer in theaters, I saw it was going to be released in 4D, originally I wanted to watch it in 4D because I thought it would be cool, it was cool and extremely shakey but as mentioned there was a deeper story in the film, it was a great movie in all and it does have the emotional feel.
Everything you said pretty much sums up my thoughts about the film. You _usually_ don't care about the human characters unless it's the 1954 film, but the movie did the drama better, since it doesn't give you last minute sympathy like Shin, or characters that became unsympathetic (most of the Monsterverse stuff). Godzilla personifies war itself, and for the first time, you _don't_ want to see any human character die. Yamazaki did well in portraying a reluctant kamikaze pilot who wants to live better for this film. It's my number one Godzilla film since the original, so I now how two most favorite film.
This is my new favorite Godzilla movie. I loved it so much. I bought a 9 inch Minus One figure after getting out of the theater, can't wait to get it... In 4 months.
My personal favourite godzilla movies are the monsterverse, they introduced me to the concept of Godzilla so i have a big soft spot for them, As for my favourite toho godzilla movie i think ill go with … godzilla against mechagodzilla
The scene where godzilla blew up everyone with his nuke atomic breath made me feel so bad for everyone and seeing the main character cry and scream in hateful agony while its raining black rain hit it hard for me.
@@Sephiroth69 yeah but it doesn’t really tell you the context of the scene/show the explosion. Either way my comment wasn’t meant to be taken seriously btw 🐇
I just now realized that Jobby's background "bricks" are a texture wall cover my grandparents also have. I was confussed as hell why it looked familiar up to this point
I like Bear McCreary's score for King of the Monster. Ghidora's theme comes to mind. But, the tolling bells during the atomic breath scenes. I loved the tolling bells.
This is just a nitpick but I kinda wish they would have given the full grown Godzilla just a little bit of that animalistic vibe they gave to the smaller pre-irradiated Godzilla from the beginning of the movie.
Funny thing even, is that apparently the director went on record to talk about the supposed 15 million dollar budget, to which he responded "I wish we had that much". So he made it with even less than 15 million, and its probably one of the best movies I've seen all year, definitely top 3. Definitely needed at least one good piece of cinema after this shitstorm of a year.
To me, this has to be one of (if not) the best films I've seen in a while, and my favorite film of 2023. Not only because it's a under 15 million budget film or the best Godzilla film, but because it's a film that has a great story and we as a audience can relate to the cast without being feed up with nonesence "messaging" & politics Hollywood is focused on instead of good story or talent. No joke, I was watching it in December 2nd, and the theater that played the film was crowded and it was silent when this film started till the end, it's insane. No joke, I cried in some scenes when the characters had a serious moment in a emotional scene. Honestly from now on: I don't even wanna watch the latest Hollywood films coming out next year (exept some that do focus to entertain) since they don't give a damn about us, so why should we care for them, because project from independent creators and films & shows from the east like Japan, Korea & China are killing it and pretty much do a better job than Hollywood will ever be from now on. My complain about this film is that it's not in a lot of theaters, which is a shame since I know some people who hasn't seen it do want to watch this Masterpiece.
Thanks so much for this no spoilers review. I Immediately made plans and went and saw the movie. I was blown away by all the things you pointed out. Best movie I’ve ever seen in theaters

Thankfully this time it’s not America’s action that caused the creation of Godzilla.
@@mrdude88 isn't shins origin is that it mutated in the nuclear waste that the japs dump in the ocean and shin fed on that till it evolved
My favorite G movie hands down. I loved every aspect of it. The score, story, acting, directing....everything.
I saw this in a 4D theater and OMG that first time he use his breath. You feel the power behind it. Almost shook me out of my seat.
I was honestly blown away at this movie for a multitude of reasons. Minus One was amazing in every sense and I'm so glad that even now, people still love it and are watching it. :)
I will say, if Jobby enjoyed Minus One and Final Wars (also my favorite aside from the OG) as much as he did, I think he'd really enjoy GMK as well.
You might actually have some balls if you do..."
I swear they were tied together in some twisted fate shit, it's so cool, especially if you look back at prior scenes with that context in mind.

Godzilla’s *”Minus One”* design
Hey jobby, you should review the hiya ghidora, it looks AMAZING! Its all you wanted from Moster arcs.
I didn’t mind the over-acting, mainly because I didn’t really notice. I also loved the emotional beats. This is the only movie I’ve watched in the past few years that I actually cried at. Akiko was just too much for me to handle, I felt so bad.
I loved it. So cool to see a actual Japanese gojira movie in cinema
YES!! THE MUSIC, THE CHARACTERS, THE EASTER EGGS, THE SHEER POWER AND FEAR EXPRESSED IN THIS FILM GRIPPED ME AND STAYS WITH ME TO THIS!!
The film was beautiful, the destruction was meaningful, the story was great, the cinematography was great, and the themes were expressed very well
The scene between the two main characters with the heavy dialogue that you referenced was one of my favorite scenes of the movie - it REALLY worked for me!
Just watched it yesterday it’s officially apart of my 3 favorite Godzilla movies two being shin and mechagodzila 2
Bruh, I didn't think anything could top the emotion of Shin's beam...
*But Minus One was EXTREMELY close to doing so...*
When I herd the original theme, couldn’t help but get teary eyed 🥲
“This Godzilla’s a frickin a**hole”
Couldnt have said it better
I absolutely love how they did the atomic breath/charge up scene, the movie honestly caught me off guard with how good it was
Rest In Peace, Kenpachiro Satsuma, the legendary suit actor for the Heisei Godzilla.
Very rarely am I late to the party on a movie with such high critical praise, yet still find myself enjoying it despite my raised expectations. But when I say this movie blew me the fuck away, I mean that Shikishima is literally crying for me right now.
Aint no way the god has posted!!!
Actually incredible what the filmmakers accomplished with only a budget of 15 million usd
6:02 yeah I think I heard that there is going to be a cinematic universe, like we might see rodan? Idk I heard it like a long time ago
I also liked the use of the original roar, in Shin Godzilla there were times where I felt it sounded out of place as an older sound effect, here the slight adjustments they made really gave it the feel of a deafening horrifying thing to hear.
i want to see Shin Godzilla 2 before i die. but will watch this soon ty jobby
I really loved Godzilla’s design
I’m going to see it tonight, I’m hyped for it and glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Glad the Goji expert got in on this. One of the few Godzilla films where I genuinely loved the human characters.
Perfect timing Jobby, my dad, sister and I just saw this masterpiece yesterday!
I never thought I would see you not only another toy reviewer with the same opinion as me on Final Wars, but also on Minus One! Much respect my man, keep on rockin!

It’s my favorite movie of all time.
Dare I say, it’s what Godzilla needs.
Really hope this can influence the Monsterverse films as far as writing goes.
Resolution is a great song as you mentioned, but to me the more subdued Pain is what stuck with me the most.
Wow, that was a fun review, thank you!
However, it may be a mistake in the translation function,
No one eats Godzilla, he just bites. lol
I saw it in 4dx it was AWESOME
At the beginning of the movie when godzilla was chomping people in half the backrest of the seat hits your back imitating feeling bitten in half it was insane
My fav is still shin but I love both of these movies
Something that rattled me when watching this movie was just how much focus there was on the loss of life as a result of Godzilla. Seeing people get crushed by debris, seeing them get crushed under Godzilla's foot, seeing them get crushed in his jaws, getting blown to bits by his atomic breath, all of it is genuinely scary to see. Seeing the deaths from the perspectives of the people dying just holds more weight than it did before
Man, was the best Fan Review that I found about this masterpiece
I saw this movie a few days ago, and I think that you perfectly described the theme of the movie without spoiling it and honestly I hope that this serves as a wake up call to the monsterverse. But if i were to rank all the modern godzilla movies this would actually be my second favorite movie beaten only by an inch by shin godzilla.
a return to Godzilla's roots as an allegory for war and nuclear weapons.
Hey my dude, just saw DnD shorts do a vid on Jocat and I wanted to kinda reach out, let you know I really love your vids and look forward to them. Your a great content creator and I hope you realize that. Keep being you and then some.❤
Thank you for no spoilers Jobby I still didn't watch the movie yet so thank you
Pretty awesome that Toho's new CGI Godzilla era is kicking off to a major successful start!
Now that the Jobbster's doing movie reviews again...
*Where is the Dark of The Moon reciew, Jobby?*
This was the first Godzilla movie I've seen and I really liked it! A bunch of scenes nearly made me cry and Godzilla was terrifying at times
Every time I see you upload Jobby my day becomes instantly better ^^!

My personal favourite godzilla movies are the monsterverse, they introduced me to the concept of Godzilla so i have a big soft spot for them,
As for my favourite toho godzilla movie i think ill go with … godzilla against mechagodzilla
The director of Minus One actually wants to do a seque, if Toho will let him. Which I hope they do.
The scene where godzilla blew up everyone with his nuke atomic breath made me feel so bad for everyone and seeing the main character cry and scream in hateful agony while its raining black rain hit it hard for me.
I’m glad I already saw the movie otherwise this comment would’ve made me jump off a bridge due to spoilers.

Maybe the true Godzilla was the human condition we found along the way.
Best movie I’ve ever seen in theaters
the doc was my favorite character.
Can't wait for this movie when it release world wide in my country , this Godzilla version really a perfect combination of classic and modern.

This ain't not Jeremy Jahns review, Jobbo, the effort and editing in this one alone>>>>>>>>>>90% of reviewers' career
I don’t have a personal favourite Godzilla movie, but I do have a personal favourite Godzilla in general. GMK Goji is the most malicious and pure evil Godzilla I’ve ever seen and I’m so happy that Minus One was able to capture some of that energy (minus the white eyes)
The “eye” has made my itching flair up 1000 fold….the melted gore was bloodless and rotten
The lack of blood is what makes me flare up
