Only Mitch could get me to watch a 18 minute about cleaning a drain pit. I am so glad you told us about the support pole you created to put in the center so additional support of the grate. That was going to be my first question. The technician dude doing the clean up was very precise and controlled in his movements in the pit. I can see now how hundreds of gallons of mud get contained in that pit. This behind the scenes was fun to watch. Thanks for filming this and putting it together. Good thing Mike never fell in there. Guess the grate keeps everything out. The natural sounds of the vacuum and the water was soothing. Have a wonderful weekend Mitch! 💜

I've done this once at an army base in the hall where they clean the tanks. That pit makes this one look almost quaint in comparison, being at least twice as wide, about twice as deep and something like 20 metres long. It took several truckloads of mud and something like two workdays (granted that includes driving to the dump and emptying out the mud as well).
It was a fun thing to do -once-, especially when you're getting paid for it. :)

Having the shop not smell of sewer is very important!
Takes a lot less water to fill the traps in our basement, that's for sure.
I just ran the bar sink for an extra minute or so, after I dumped like a litre or two down the floor drain in the unfinished/utility side.
We only moved out here to an old 'burb, after the city sewer was well-established.

A monthly job at the service station I worked at in the 80's was to shovel out the floor drain. A 2 bay station with a 2 foot drain in the center that was about 10feet deep. Had a shovel with a 12-13 foot handle and the spade end was bent 90 degrees. A month's worth of daily floor scrubbing washing down undercarriage grime, kitty litter, and all other stuff that didn't get swept up 1st would equal a few 5 gallon buckets of horrible smelling black sludge. But on the bright side the soda machine had one button labeled broken that really was the beer button, and the owner did not care that I was still in HS.

I used to have that job on a much grander scale. I worked for an abatement company and when it was time to clean out the pulp pit at the paper mill we sucked it all out with a super sucker. It was a vacuum truck the tank was I think 1,000 gallons, it may have been bigger but the pit was 100' by 100' square and it was 50' deep and it took us a better part of 3 to 4 days to get it clean. Don't get your arms or legs near the hoses because it would at the minimum break them but it could very well pull them completely off your body.

Can only imagine what that septic truck bill is going to be over time, why not build a wire basket that is tight to the walls of the solids pit with a lift point at the top center. When its full just use an electric chain fall or something like that to lift the basket out and dump it in that big dumpster you have right outside your garage? Hell, just buy some 3 in suction hose and buy your own Trash Pump and run the hose out to the brush or ditch. By the time you pay for 4 or 5 services that's prolly what you woulda spent on your own setup. 🤷🏻‍♂

While at high school and university, I had a part time job doing car cleaning and detailing at a local car dealership. In the wash bay there was a central floor grate with a pit underneath, and one day the shop drain (which drained into the wash bay) was running slow, which indicated the pit was at capacity with solids. We had a "post hole shovel" (think of a 10 foot pole with a spoon on the bottom) that we used to manually dig out the collected material. It stunk to high heaven. We had a rolling dumpster we put the material into, and it was loaded so heavy, by the next day it had buried all 4 wheels 6 inches into the asphalt where it was stored outside. When the truck came to empty it, we needed to get some pallet jacks and floor jacks to lift it enough to get back onto level asphalt to allow the truck to access it. A vacuum truck would have been ideal, but we were working cheap, so that was not in the cards.

At my detailing job, we would do a cleaning once in a while with our drain. Since it was a dealership, there was always a lot of plastic that fell off of cars into that drain and clogged it. I remember in the winter when getting snow off cars, there would be like a foot of water around it. The smell when cleaning it out was horrendous lol

  • @Ty98k

I could smell the full drain pit through the screen, through the whole video. This doesnt say much, but it's one grade better smelling than raw sewage... i dont know how else to put it! 🤢😅. That comment that the septic guy said about "Mike Clogging it" was GOLDEN!! 😂😂. Anyways, keep up your great workmanship Mitch! See you in the next one! 💪

Very informative. I had wondered about your drain/pit. It still looked like quite a process but the good news is you don't have to do it by hand.
I do have a question being a I don't know about these things, how do you know when it is time to clean it out? Is there some sort of warning light?
    Thanks for sharing this video.

Sorta curious, knowing how hard a sewage treatment plan works to turn liquid waste into treated wastewater and sludge: you are already starting with pretty dry, lightly contaminated soil. What stops you from hiring any entry-level laborer to shovel out the top half of the mud and wheelbarrow it to your dumpster? Such a guy, twice as often, has got to be way cheaper than a contract with a septic company.

You should have an outdoor section where you specifically use to spray off all that excess mud before bringing it into the shop for regular washing and detailing.

Hey mitch, when you get the tanks clean of all the mud after your done detailing is it a pretty penny meaning is it expensive or is it reasonable. that is a lot of mud to have to clean out but I'm pretty sure in Canada where you live it could be pretty affordable which is why you get it done so often

Several people have asked the same question but as I scroll down to the comments, I have not seen the cost for pumping out said septic tank or mud tank as it should be called. Maybe Mitch wants to keep this private.

@@TheDetailGeek If it gets mixed with waste water then it'll go to a wastewater plant and settle out in another tank where it eventually ends up in landfill. Kind of like trash collection, it just ends up in progressively bigger containers until it gets to the final destination.
There's a multi year roadwork project near me that dug a big pit so the hydrovacs supporting the utility work have somewhere to dump on site. Slurry eventually dries out and then just gets buried.

Some wastewater treatment facilities will take it to farmers. Of course after all pathogenic organisms are dead.

Just a question, i understand when it is freezing cold outside but during the summer when you have a extremely muddy vehicle, why not spray it off outside before bringing it inside to do the cleaning?? Wouldn't that save money?

Question: what happens to this mud after the truck has pumped it out of your drain system? Can it be used for anything? Is it just pumped into an evaporation dam? Im really curious and would love if you could do a video on that.

    • @tobenkinzle4498
      @tobenkinzle4498 3 месяца назад

Depends on the local laws and regulations around here you could dump at C and D landfill with it just been mud. Lots of areas don't take anything from pump truck people dumping sewage on unapproved sites. It probably ends up at waste management plant

thought if you get 2 boxes made of stainless punch holes and add 4 chain points on each box you could pick them out with a hoist or skid steer then take it outside and dump it in your yard or garden and save the fee from the skeptic truck and if you build 4 boxes just a quick swap out and back to work
