  • This video shows how to replace the return spring on my drill press, however, most should be similar. Also known as a quill spring.

    Just what i needed - your comment about the spring firing over the other side of the garage was exactly what i was thinking too.
    Also, thanks for the tip on tightening those lock nuts away from the case.

    Thank you so very much!
    The instructions made no sense in regards to this section of my drill press. The cover itself is so very tight and I don't like forcing things. But it looks like I may have to to get it to move as I need to adjust the tension.
    Thank you again❣️

    I can't seem to find the exact size I need. Are any of the measurements crucial, or can it be 6mm wide instead of 7, for instance. It's a 40 year old machine. Thanks if you can help.

    • @DownUnderWoodWorks
      @DownUnderWoodWorks  Год назад

      Hey Herb, i think the only limitation is the depth of the cover piece. if you're replacing a 7mm with a 6mm i don't see any issuer with that. you would have an issue if the new spring was wider and stopping the cover piece from seating properly. Hope that helps.

  • @hunkydorian
    @hunkydorian 2 года назад

    It should be mentioned that if the spring is hooked onto a slot on the perimeter of the shell, yes you can put it in backwards. That would be bad.

    • @DownUnderWoodWorks
      @DownUnderWoodWorks  2 года назад

      True. It would pay to take note of how the original is installed and just put the new one in the same way.

  • @niklar55
    @niklar55 6 лет назад

    That worked well.
    Unfortunately, the spring I was sent fits perfectly in the housing, except for the bent tab that locates in the housing, so it wont slid in.
    Rats!
    That means I'll have to buy another.

    • @DownUnderWoodWorks
      @DownUnderWoodWorks  6 лет назад

      Damn, don't you just hate that. Good luck with the new one mate.

    • @niklar55
      @niklar55 6 лет назад

      Yesterday, I was using the drill, with a speed bit, and the spring housing and nuts screwed on to act as a friction damper.
      Wound the chuck up to the top position, went to remove the workpiece, and the chuck and bit suddenly descended onto my finger.
      If I'd just kept my fingers still, I'd just have had a puncture, as it was, I instinctively removed my hand, and the puncture became a gash from knuckle to knuckle on my middle finger, nearly down to the bone.
      Yes, its damn sore!
      Hobbies are such great fun!
      PS, Where in Oz are you located?

      The irony, is that I normally wear gloves to work with, but had taken them off to do some fine marking out, and then the gremlins struck!
      My son was in Sydney a couple of years back, for 18 months, sort of working holiday.
      He hoped to get sponsored, but the construction industry took a downturn, with all the CO2 crap, and that all fell apart.
      He may end up in the South of France instead. :-)
      Different language, which frightens him a bit.
      His partner, is there with her mother, awaiting their firstborn, so it can be registered as French.
      The nearest I got was Singapore. My mate and I were intending to ship ourselves and a couple of motor bikes to Queensland, bike down to Melbourne, and then ship back. [in the 60's] but the shipping company wanted more to ship us, than we intended to spend on the whole trip. So, that idea died. Even then I could see how China was developing, and how it would dominate the area eventually. Cheers.

      I cut off that "bent tab" (thank you Dremel tool for having a tiny grinding wheel...the spring was partially in the holder when I cut it off. Then, I pounded the spring in all the way, put some oil in there, and it works fine.
