Outdoor Photography in a Storm

- My landscape photography road trip through Scotland continues north to Glencoe where I encounter the type of weather you can expect most of the time in this region. A storm is building and although these conditions can be challenging, they do offer some photographic rewards in the way of mood, drama and atmosphere. My DSLR camera gets a soaking, but the weather sealing of the Canon 5D MKIV holds firm. Astoundingly, my vlogging camera, the Canon M50 gets even more of a drenching and did not fail me once. In fact, this little M50 has been subject to these conditions time and time again over the past 18 months and has never let me down. I hope you enjoy the video.

Sometimes I’m more impressed by your effort you take to film yourself, than by the video itself 😱😅
Lol! I was thinking the same. No wonder he always seems so stressed, I would be to setting up all those shots...especially the ones where he intentionally puts his boot back into the mud to create a scene/shot.
How about when he's driving off some winding road, and we're watching it.
Just two minutes into it and I too was already thinking about the effort put into placing the camera, walking the scene, and then having to go back to retrieve the camera. All this in the muck and rain. That's dedication. I have to admit I wouldn't even want to be out there in that mess let alone try to film myself out in it.
He might just leave a lot of cameras behind!
I thought the same thing too. I always think it's kind of funny watching all these photographer videos or thru hikers showing them walking along and doing things when you know they had to set up the video camera, go back and walk thru the scene, and then have to come back and pick up the camera and it do it all over again for real. But it does make it more interesting than everything being from a first person POV I guess.
One of your best videos in a while. The reduced narration really worked on this one. It may depress you, but you are truly a warrior of moody photos in bad weather in both Glencoe and the Lake District.
In response to the newsletter. I do like the slow paced video style, suits landscape photography.
+1 on this. I am really enjoying the slow pace. The "realness" is one of the reasons I subscribed to this channel a long time ago, and these last few have really taken that a step further.
Full respect for all that b-roll in those horrible conditions!
I rarely comment on RUclips videos. I have watched many of yours and even though your photography is beautiful let's not forget about the video itself. All I can think every time I start watching is all the monumental work that you put into this production. Every single take involves you constantly moving all the gear around, often in difficult terrain/conditions, getting back into the frame, and repeating everything all over again. It really makes you think that there's a whole team filming. You, sir, are a machine!
In response to your mail: yes, absolutely 'took note of incorporating more ambient sounds in your videos. I enjoy it, as I suspect most people will. I don't think we're watching your videos for short and to the point - I think most of your following - to varying degrees - are photographing these beautiful places vicariously through you - so the more time, the more "immersion", the better. Thanks for taking us along.
lol, I've just posted the opposite. So many togs do the long stuff now. But I guess it must be popular or they wouldn't.
I agree!
Yes to the new format. I like the silence of the experience
Yes, the slow style with environmental sounds works very well. Makes it easier to have a sense of the whole, rather than just the visuals. And sets the visuals even more strongly into the experienced world. Definitely. Also: very relaxing to watch.
It's amazing how much time you spend on making this videos with this different angles. But that's why the are so good even in a rainy day of Glencoe.
Thomas... you are a angel of photography... thank you for sharing your photos with us 🙂🙏
You know you've become a true fan when you sit anxiously for close to 5 minutes with nothing but b roll just to see the first image. Never disappointed.
The effort, work ethic are admirable. One thing I know is that the rewards are greater in terms of satisfaction when endeavour is a component. Hat off to you, your photography is wonderful.
That first image of Glencoe's hills and all the bracken at 05:00... wow! Stunning.
There's nothing like a guy suffering for his art, especially when he has to film himself crossing rocks and water, the second time, because the first time he was setting the camera up to film the second time, then there is that boot in the bog vacuum moment - fabulous dedication there. All in a nasty wet wind too. Good work!
Loved the mood of this video. As someone who’s not a fan of talking to the camera, it’s great to see that it’s not always necessary 👍
Fourteen months ago my husband and I traveled to Glencoe from Washington State. We packed wellies, rain pants, down pants, down coats and raincoats. Guess what?? It rained--hard and was chilly; I was so grateful for my raingear because one of the two pictures I had planned to take was of the Glencoe valley, and I would not be hampered by rain. I got the shot, and the moody skies really delivered a great image. I like your slow-paced video and thoughtful approach to imaging! thankyou so much!!
The first 5 minutes of this video was pure bliss Tom. Thanks for bringing us into the moment.
Everybody is effected by the elements differently and you are no exception. I give you great kudos for alway making the attempt, regardless of outcome. Those two images are very nice, the first being my favorite.I know you won't give up on Glencoe as I see so many opportunities for amazing imagery. Bravo, and Cheers!
I had to stop the video to write this. That first shot, after 5 minutes of sound and silence watching you photograph that landscape just made the image into something else. Wow mate, you’ve genuinely outdone yourself I think. You’ve really just pushed photography vlogging to a new level.
Nothing less than a masterpiece in storytelling and b-roll!
Good story telling without a word , and a great vlog this is photography and landscape dedication, its not all sunshine and early morning blue sky's you have to cover all weathers and this is how its done . great image.
i love your "slow" shoot attitude. Like 2 pictures in one videos. Really values the beauty of nature
You are the best photographer in the world.
I loved the peacefulness of this video, it was restful as well as engaging. The sequence through that beautiful landscape and dramatic weather in the beginning was almost meditative.
I find the 5 first and silent minutes of this video brilliant. From the van to the final shot without a single word. Great storytelling. You did it already in a previous video, also liked it. Make me ask questions you would normally discuss !!
Absolutely love storms. Just be careful. Enjoyed your trip with Murray. Regards, Barrie
These are always the best videos, just thomas and nature
Honesty before anything. That's great! Better times/weather are coming. Go chase them!
That was one classy video! I even liked the wind noise because your wind sock moved the noise more into the bass. I know the rain and wind is a pain, but the color is still all there. There’s no fall color better than on mountain tundra. Since the color sensors in our eyes shut down in low light, we see everything as much more gray than the camera does. Ansel Adams wrote a lot about colors in the rain. Thanks for sharing this, Thomas!
the first one is for my opinion one of the best photos you have taken this year…. it is a typical "thomas heaton" Picture. Balance and composition are just perfect
Those first 5 minutes were simply amazingly calming. I usually watch your videos late at night, and couldn’t have loved it any better
Hello Thomas, even though the weather isn't quite what you would prefer, I say your videos and the way you include yourself in it with each episode is quite a masterpiece.Filming oneself and being able to focus on photographing isn't easy and you seem to have mastered this art quite well especially when it comes to the various changes in the weather outlook. Hope these videos do have a good return for the expenses that you incur by going places under different circumstances. There is a lot to think about behind the scenes. Cheers.
The effort of making self video is gold!!!
Thanks for taking me on your trip! Very recognizable. I am a photographer in central Norway and do mostly work for cabin rental companies. And I can sign - The weather can be variable ... But what does one not sacrifice for the dream shot!
I just love the sound of rain hitting your van ,it's so peaceful .A "BEAUTIFUL" video tom I do like a moody character of a landscape if there is such a saying maybe not , loved it matey.
In the field, showing it like it is, great! 👍🏻
I thoroughly do enjoy the slow pace, contemplative, immersed style experience of this video and the last couple outdoor ones. Particularly suits the mood of the day and what capturing a landscape shot is all about: being in the moment, catching the essence surrounding us. Your shots brilliantly reflect that ambiance. Feels like being there. Thank you so much for sharing while putting yourself through misery to allow it. Full of gratitude.
Great video. I think those compositions turned out great. I kind of like those moody overcast photos and like how the vibrant fall colors get isolated in that type of light.
That photo shown at 4:50 is a very good. I could look at that one for a long time and not get bored. So I hope you stayed for the duration and kept at it. Looking forward to more from Scotland.
"I'm not complaining" - yes you are :-) Amazed you managed to still get some cracking photos in those conditions. Sometimes when it's that type of weather it's simply a case of forgetting about the photography and enjoying the solitude and wildness of the scenery.
Now that is dedication to the art, nicely done Thomas, another great video.
I like the silence and peace in this video. Good job man, good job
Ahhh Scotland. I'm always fascinated to see how many people bike and motorcycle Scotland just for that reason.
I really like the silence, the trudging, the discoveries, the assessments, and the takeaways. The rough weather too, there's a tranquility in the adversity, and your presence.
Timing and light is everything. One week before this there was 6 inches of snow up top in Glen Coe and the conditions made for great photography. I was on top of Buachaille Etive Beag for sunset and it was great. Really like your tree photograph down Glen Etive.
That whole opening scene! Glencoe is beautiful, even in that weather. A stunning landscape. It sings to me, as much of Scotland, especially the north, from videos and photos I've seen, does. I'm working on a trip over there in a couple of years. It's gone from a want to a need, and closely approaching a must. A great video as always, accompanied by amazing photographs.
Just amazing picture ... Thanks Tom ... To be frank, I haven't been following up on your videos lately .. this one caught my eye and my intuition beast right. The best of pics comes in worst of conditions
The first silent and dramatic 5 mins were the bestest !....please do more like this please Thomas 👍
There's a major storm blowing in to Albuquerque as i watch this. Good night to watch storm videos, with the coldest temperatures in the last 5 years hitting tonight. I'm hibernating!
Awesome - Great stuff. And as usual some very nice images which I'm sure you appreciated more when you were home, warm and dry - soggy camper van just a distant memory. 🏴👍
Thomas... My God Man... this is why I enjoy your videos so much. All of the detail and thought you put into your videos! I have just started doing videos myself and they are so.... simple.... But! You inspire me to start thinking on how to grow! Sure would love to have a van like you have at times I feel as if I am right there with you in another seat! Saying hey... Greg
Those first 5 minutes are so peaceful. Nice !
Love the slow pace and goes to show life is not always the way you want it!,
Those videos are like a therapy... watching them is like meditation. Love it :)
Also brings back memories of the Scottish rainy dais.
I really liked this one. As a Glasgow lad now living in Canada I found the atmospherics of this video took me right back. Especially the foot stuck in the bog! That first image is fabulous. Second's not bad either.
Thumbs up Thom.
Enjoy the style.
I’d been hoping more would follow suit.
There used to be many nature shows with this style in the old days.
That was an absolutely cracking shot at the start. It really spoke to me - magnificent. And watching the way you got it was just as good, too. You really are a trooper when it comes to the B roll footage! I like the quiet, immersive footage a lot, though I think your channel is all about a bit of variety, and it's kind of part of the fun discovering what style you've chosen for each video. That said, if they were all like this then I wouldn't complain.
Toujours de belles compositions de photos et c est pas faciles pour les avoir ces photos. merci cher ami.
Thanks for a pleasing show again Thomas.
Hello Thomas. Really enjoyed the video, and massively salute the patience that you showed in creating all the angles for the content in the pouring rain! I'm mixed on whether I like the approach or not. I certainly enjoyed this, but I also like the "rambling Thomas" videos where you just talk to the camera unplanned and just being you - I like the honesty in those types of videos in that I feel that we are seeing the real Thomas Heaton. Admire your tenacity in pulling this one together sir and hope that the Scotland trip got better weather wise. All the best.
Love this episode I hated November’s in Britain dull wet drawn out weeks of blahhhh but you came away with some crackin shots and even more impressive b roll incredible the amount of effort that goes into creating videos and you nail it every time 🚐📷
Fab video, no talking just getting on with it. Very challenging conditions.
What a great weather :-)
I love going out in the rain and taking mooooody photos.
I think your new style of video is great
We experienced that same weather last October when we travelled to SKYE via Ballachulish! We were in the UK for 14 days and after leaving London day 3 we didn't see the sun until we landed back In Sydney Australia.! LOL. We still loved the region and want to go back there. It is so different her In Australia we are in the middle of a 2-3 year drought with severe water restrictions. Love the new format, it's good to mix it up, it creates a sense of tranquility and mood.
Your B roll gets better with every video, keep filming!
Beautiful video - really like this style! Photo of the tree was fabulous. More like this!
Love the alternative video style with more sounds and "atmosphere." The two images you created are wonderful. I too recently went out in a full downpour to shoot for several hours. It's a tough go, but the reward at the end can be worth it. Adds to the sense of accomplishment ;-)
I like this type of video which plots the journey with nice scenery and video editing
Okay so. Thomas. You are an incredible photographer, ofcourse, BUT... THAT was some amazing filmmaking. You haven't said a single word, A SINGLE WORD for 5 minutes and 20 seconds, yet i fould my mind racing like crazy and heart pumping, because of the shots you filmed, the story and the atmosphere you set. I literally couldn't believe how crazy i went during those 5:20 of the video... This has to be one of (of not the) best videos you have made! Cheers and thanks for this!
Watching this as I am setting out on my Photo workshop with Joe Cornish in North Yorkshire on the wettest day in November so far this year. So I have that same feeling could wet and grey. I bet my image will be ..... I just know your feeling so well.
If its a miserable day, you take a miserable photo - couldn't say it any better than yourself ! Thanks for sharing
This is the kind of the videos from you that I like most. Excellent.
The way he "launched" the tripod into the ground :D
Very engaging cinematography- or rather: I fehlt a high Level of immersion - like being there with you fighting through the miserable weather. And finally no nauseating pov cam anymore! Thank you, thank you! I am curious what you are up to next...
MASTER OF THE B ROLL!! Wow!
This was a great video. I’m watching early Sunday morning...in the dark, cozy with the fire on....watching you trudge through that boggy landscape. Fantastic!
I just have to say, also, that I’m ridiculously jealous of your van.
This is superb cinematography!!
Push on to Skye... always worth it. Loving the channel.
Hello Tom. Your videos moulded me Soo much. I started to look composition like how a professional does. Keep doing.
Masterful B-roll Thomas.
Your filmmaking skills just keep getting better. Love all of those extra details. The look of some of those scenes is just beautiful.
Your photos are absolutely magical, and I love your cinematography, cozy and atmospheric, just amazing.
Great video TH! Give the crew a pay rise, outstanding 🤝 ! Award winning video 👍
I love that you’re incorporating more sounds into your videos! In fact I wouldn’t mind a video that’s entirely like the first couple minutes of this one!
I really like your photograph of the tree. And of course I always enjoy your videos!!
Pure dedication. What a great video!
Tom, great jog on the videography on this vlog. Your storytelling without words is great. I know it's a lot of work and it shows!
I am amazed by your multitasking ability without any help.
Love it. ✌🏽
Wow - you were really up against it! Good on you for getting out regardless of the weather (especially at the start - loved that image!). This video also captures the west coast of Scotland at it's finest. Best of luck for next time!
Depressing? I think you did a great job, Thomas! In my last video I talked a bit about bringing emotions into my photos and I'll go deeper into this in one of my coming videos. I love your square cropped picture of the tree, as you used your depressing emotion as base to master this piece of art, "shouting" after something positive, given through the warmth of the foliage! This is definitely reflected in your photo and this is the reason it has got a real master piece! Congrats ;)
Great video Tom with fantastic b roll 👍 getting soaked and hiking through the marsh was definitely worth it that 1st image is stunning 👌 loving the new bag to!!
Ooo a shimoda bag. Great video! Love the moodiness of it!
The effort you put into filming these vids is insane! Especially in that kind of weather! Fantastic!
It’s a shame about the weather conditions, but still a great video Tom. Keep up the great work, I’m loving the attention you’re giving on the sound side of things, it’s elevating your videos to the next level!
I just got back from an equally wet trip to Cornwall, only to find my best shot ruined by raindrops on the lens! Gorgeous colours and atmosphere in the first sequence.
Thomas, as others have already commented, the slow silent beginnings of this video was captivating. I loved it! Great format choice to immerse the viewers in the elements with you. So well done, mate. Your videography equals your photography, as I loved both images. Keep it up, Thomas. Cheers,
Ed.
Absolutely love this video Tom, can certainly see how much work has gone into producing it. Shame about the weather but good luck in the Cairngorms, hope it's better for you. Keep up the wonderful work.
Lovely as always! You've got to make a video and show us how you cleanup, care for your gear after they get soaked on an outing like this! I'm always scared of abusing my gear like this! So, such a video can help folks like me :)
Those autumn colours, surely amazing! Thanks for taking us along while I sit on my sofa relaxing :)))
Great photographs and a great video too. Weather like that certainly makes things difficult!
