It made quick work chopping the critters out . If the weather got bad , didn't take long to chop up fire wood . Build a brush shelter . I kept it razor sharp and the mask oiled so it would not rust my axe

Hi Brian: I wanted to give you an update about my purchase of the Schrade SCAXE2 hatchet. I am pleased with the hatchet. You had mentioned that at the top of the hatchet case, the top point of the axe can stick out. I got a piece of that nylon "seat belt" material and cut a piece to cover that open portion of the hatchet case. I also noticed that at the hammer end of the case, it is so tight that it does not allow the "hammer end" of the hatchet to slide back in easily. This also I corrected by cutting the case nylon strap and adding a looser fitting piece of the nylon "seatbelt" material. This "seat belt" nylon material is 3" wide, and I use it for lots of "jerry rigging" on my gear. I use it to make broader "belt loops" so that all my gear fits onto a wide leather or canvas belt. One might think that this sort of "jerry rigging" a tedious affair involving sewing etc.; but all I do is use Gorilla Glue on both pieces, spread with a wooden craft stick of the "popsicle" variety. I do one side at a time, laying it flat with a plastic grocery bag on the bottom to prevent mess overnight. The next day, I glue the other half down. With plastic bags on top, some weighty material can be piled on top to clamp these glued pieces together. I like the Schrade axes and the full tang knives, having bought the ones you have reviewed here. Keep up the good work.

Works perfect for when I go car camping with family and friends. Me? Throw a blade? But seriously, yeah, I think Schrade is working really hard to put out high value gear. Is it always the very best steel available? Probably not. Is it usually in the 3 figure price range? Not even close. Is it a very solid piece of gear at a very competitive price? So far, at least with everything I've seen, the answer is yes.
This is the first Scrade axe that I have liked. The problem with the ferroceum rod was not the rod or the axe. It was the titanium oxide coating on the axe. Use a grinder and grind off that stupid coating in a small area; and you will throw sparks like no tomorrow.
I did and it is better but tomorrow is still here. It is at least possible now, but an axe makes a very awkward striker anyway. I'll probably never actually use it for that but I believe in being prepared.
My SCAXE2 fire steel works just fine right of the top edge. I have started plenty of fires with it. The trick is to lay the axe on the material and use the fire steel from the top side and push down from the top on the fire steel. Will make a video and demonstrate Good review
if you are in the woods and the handle happens to break find some small diameter flexable limbs split them with your knife and then fold them over the place where the head and handle connect (you can melt the plastic off with a small fire that wont hurt the temper but will get the plastic out of the way) then once you have enough limbs wrapped around the head to form a decent sized handle run a piece of cord through the hole in the head run it down to the end of your new handle and then start right below the head with the rest of your cord and start wrapping it TIGHT it wont be a perfect solution but it will bring your tool back into play and make is useful again the branches trick comes from the technique of the first axe makers from the stone age!!!!
Thanks for the great review; it looks handy. My opinion has always been that there are fillet knives, and then there is every other bladed and pointy implement. Fillet knives are meant to be delicate, but for everything else: "If it won't throw, it doesn't go" with me. I don't want a tool that falls apart under its own internal harmonics.
+Josh Hess yes it makes good sparks but it ruins the blade it will put nasty burrs on the blade. I did it on the blade and I had to pull out the grinder to redo the edge because it got wrecked.

I have been thinking about getting the Cold steel Rifleman Hawk, I know you did a review on the Trail hawk the little brother. if you were going on a week Hiking trip would you rather have a hatchet, or the Rifleman
I haven't used a Rifleman so I can't give you an honest opinion there. I think a hatchet is probably more useful for splitting firewood but it's heavier. I might just go with a folding saw and big knife. The older I get the lighter I like my pack ;-)
yea I have been using Dave Canterbury idea where I just take the Wood cutting band saw bald with key ring on both ends and then using a sick to make the band saw handle. you do have to find good straight sticks. but it keeps the pack light. the only problem is if you break a blade of forget to change it out with a sharp one there no way to replace, fix, or sharpen it out in the field.
Say Heah Brian, All of a sudden the weather got colder again bummer. But I did get a new "Afternoon Delight" Set. I saw a good deal on a Mora 2000 and a Mora Hatchet but to get that price it was only available in the Orange color. I got mine in the Olive Green so natch I had to get a Bacho Laplander even though all of them come in Orange and the Mora's would be a little less. But I got lucky, My Bokor Plus Black Vox Rold matches in to the set, So now I have a good Lite Trio and a good belt knife to booth if I want to take the Rold along. By the way, how is the head connected to the handle ? does it go down into the handle also. Thanx in advance.

I just use a Bahco folding saw. The lock is broken on mine but it still cuts fine.
