Kasier rolls are made with a 2 foot long thin piece of dough tied into the shape of a crown as a sign of respect to the German King that fed his people with rolls to keeping them alive during the time of a famine. Hard rolls are a ball of dough baked in an oven. The Kasier roll has *diastatic malt powder* as an ingredient, it is also used in authentic Philadelphia hoagie rolls & soft pretzels, the mault powder adds a falvor change & a little sweetness. The best can be bought from Italian bakeries in the Philadelphia area but they are a Pennsylvania Dutch bread recipes. If you're searching for good Philly hoagie or Kasier rolls outside of the Philadelphia area your best bet would be a German Bakery, even tho most would think Italian. They would be fun for a family to make together, tying the knot is tricky for most, & can be treated like a beagle, making all different flavors, I always add dried onion flakes to my dough, because there is no sandwich you're going to make with these that onion isn't going to make better, & top with toasted sesame seeds. And mattering on the age & skill of your kids, if they're going to help you make them you might want to make the dough using a *water roux* to make it easier for them, & maybe you too. Decades ago I've heard of a Philly Cheese Steak Shop in Florida using kasier rolls to make their cheese steaks when they ran out of hoagie rolls, the round shape wasn't right, but the taste would still be true. I've done this many times myself at home for the same reason. (now I want to make them, it's been two years ... maybe next week) Kasier rolls are a great pick for hot roast beef sandwiches, add some swiss cheese in there, & if the beef is from a pot roast & you have left over potatoes that were cooked with the beef, *nothing* makes for better home fries, & perfect as a side.
I’m Sicilian, and I make my garlic bread with the exact ingredients. The only difference is: I don’t cook the topping first. I just place the olive oil, butter, garlic, parsley, salt and cheese on top and put it under the broiler. I loved watching you make the bread properly. I want to cry when I see people use margarine and garlic powder on bread. Bravo!
I subscribe to Eva's 'Pasta Grammar' YT channel. She is from the southern Italian region of Calabria. She keeps her ingredients very simple and insists that real Italians don't use much garlic at all. I was surprised. I pile on the garlic.
Dude is a straight shooter. It's funny how your tastes change as you get older. I wonder if this channel continues what his comments will be when hes 15, 16 and beyond? . I'm 61 and growing up could not stand pickles on anything! The first thing I would do is remove the pickles from a burger from a fast food joint rather than make a special order and wait. Now, while I don't buy pickles, I don't even care if they are on a burger or sandwich. The brine doesn't bother me like it used to. I also use different hot sauces more regularly. I've always liked spicy food but I just use it more in my cooking.
My Grandmother used to say, "Honesty is the best policy". And you are a very humble and good dad to admit that you did not make the roast beef. It made me crack up laughing because it's great to see a family being real together!
James has a great palate. I'm European and we certainly don't use as much sugar as you guys do and you can always use more Garlic. Congratulations young lad you will eat well as you get older - you are already showing signs of a refined and grown-up set of taste buds. Great channel.
to contrast the maybe too sweet onion jam, i think a horseradish mayo would be killer on this sandwich. kinda give it a french dip vibe. great recipe per usual, love hearing the family's thoughts!
Beautiful family, it's always great having your food critics in the house to be able to test the food and give real feedback. Oh how I wish we could taste through the screen! 😋
You asked for us to make suggestions for what you could make on your show. I go to a Northern Italian restaurant and they make from scratch a Gorgonzola cheese sauce that is to die for. Their recipes are from immigrating grandparents. Would love it if you would make this on your show. Thank you!
This is perfect, everything Spot On! As for the Jam. Onions sweeten when they cook, Balsamic sweetens when it reduces, and oh yeah sugar is sweet even if you burn it. Personally, for this recipe, I would cut the sugar in half, and at the end if it needs sweetening, drizzle in honey as needed. Won't cool the jam, and you don't have to wait for it to melt. Awesome as always Brother!
Damn dude you are now my favourite youtube cook channel! Cant believe how addictive and high quality your videos are! I dont cook much but i always love to watch your shows.
"That's the one thing I didn't make " ... ☺️ your Family is so sweet. Thank you for sharing them and this phenomenal recipe with us ❤️ (I use that word a lot too!)
I think my favorite part of your videos is getting James' reaction. And it's great that you include him in these. He's going to have an amazing palate!
I love that James is so sweet and appreciative and polite and your wife is sweet. It seems you guys have such a positive atmosphere at home and it’s just awesome to see.
Im definitely going to use the recipe, but dude, as an empty nester, watching your videos brings back so many good family memories, you've got quality, style and substance. thanks for making me smile and hungry, and fat
I just love all that you do .The amount of compassion that you put into every episode, is just astounding. You put the love of every Nonna into all the dishes you make.
“I love the roast beef”, sure that’s the only thing I didn’t make! 😂 My family would say the same. Jim your recipes are good but the interaction with the family really makes the videos!
The onion jam looks so delicious. Like your son, I think I'd prefer it less sweet and more garlicky. l love how your son is giving you filming tips and poking fun at your vocabulary haha.
I absolutely love it when your family gets in there and we get to see and hear their thoughts on the food you cook so beautifully- I knew it was a winner ( the roast beef on the roll etc) when she took the second bite! That nailed it and I knew it was spot on for her and I was aligning when she said she doesn’t like roast beef but that she would eat THAT all night long. Way to go Jim, you nailed it♥️♥️♥️♥️
Shout out from Australia! Love your channel. I really have no confidence in the kitchen but watching your vids gives me the motivation to get in there and give it a shot. Thank you and keep up the amazing work!!
Best, most charming video so far! I’ve been making your recipes and it’s made our family dinners so much better! My 90-yr-old mother and my 16-yr-old son especially love the Cherry Tomato Butter Pasta.
Great job. The sandwiches look delicious. The video production is outstanding. Your step-by-step execution of the recipe is as good as any I've seen on RUclips... actually much better that most. You make it look easy and doable. Now, please pass me one of those roast beef sandwiches.
Just one additional comment. Such nice family moments here - very sweet to watch you all together. I bet you are a “phenomonal” family to hang out with.
Greetings from South Huntington! When you talk roast beef, you're speaking my language. I grew up in my dad's deli. Roast beef was on a roll, with ketchup, mayo, salt, pepper and cheese (usually American). The roast beef was so good because it's boars head. Anyway, your version has me intrigued. Well done.
When you said "a cup of sugar" I was thinking to myself, damn, onions so sweet when you caramelize them, that's too much! Then your kid comes in and saves the day by validating my thoughts. Also, more garlic? Chad tastes, your boy won you a sub
Just found this channel and I’m already excited to try some recipes! During spring and summer I eat Salads almost every day. One of the only things I never tire of eating but cold weather is coming and these hot dishes are going to hit the spot. Love seeing the family in the kitchen having fun.
You guys are all awesome. Dare I say phenomenal? 😉😁 James continues to do his job well giving you honest feedback and you receive it with good nature. 👍 Great to see your wife joining you both the other side of the camera, too. Great family. Great content. Have an awesome weekend!
James is such a well brought up kid, you can tell. Its great that he has his own opinions on food and doesnt shy from saying it, but he's good about it.

Pecorino romano makes everything over the top..but given how you're basically making french onion soup, I can't help but think gruyere would be awesome too.
I love how you laugh when your son is in the room! What joy! Onion jam is a precarious balance. Proceed with caution as butter, salt and sugar go in. It depends on the sweetness and water content of the onions, and of course make sure to add pepper and garlic for James.
I made this tonight for dinner. Delicious! I cut everything in half since I was just making two sandwiches. They came out so flavorful and are a definite keeper.

It's so refreshing and moreover endearing to be brave enough to share your son's honest opinion. Thank you for letting us be a part of your videos. BTW, i went back and watched the shrimp scampi rolls video too. Can't wait to make it. Tx.

Oh man. I know what I’m making to take on the boat to the sandbar this weekend. Those sandwiches look awesome!! Love your channel! I made your pasta with clams last night and it was the best we have ever had. Thanks to you and your family for such great recipes and easy to follow directions.
