Back in 1982 Midnight Oil played in front of Los Angeles City Hall at the street scene... and all hell broke out. It was one amazing night in California.
I still consider them the best live band I've ever seen...first saw them in Newcastle when they were promoting their first album way back when. Unbelievable show and they continued to get better every time I saw them. So many great memories and whenever I hear them I'm back in Oz...
I saw them twice in Perth 2017. In the after partee I ran into the Great One. He took offense when I suggested that the Oils were the best concert band on Earth.
Never ceases to amaze me of just how good a live band they've always been. I count my lucky stars I'm old enough to have seen them live so many times in Adelaide from 1979 to 2017.
When Pete jumps down to the crowd in The Dead Heart is absolutely beautiful.. he has pure joy in his smile after not playing live for years - you can tell he is enjoying and loving it.. Thankyou guys for the music and lyrics and for keeping it real.
Rob Hirst is one of the most entertaining drummers there is....had the pleasure of being seated next to him on a long flight some thirty years ago...charming interesting talented gentleman.
I miss The Oils. They sound great here and I am sure if they reformed, the magic would still be there. Incidentally, even though I grew up in the US and Canada, my American history teacher was from Sydney and went to law school with Peter Garrett!
So touching to see Bones again, taking over the vocals now and then...and the whole band in such frenetic full on action. A beautiful, chaotic moment of passion.
I just watched the set again while attempting to work. Way too distracting. Holy moly, what a band - even from a board mix, and a one-off reunion. Four tremendously skilled players and a riveting frontman. Power, passion, conviction, principles and raw energy. I miss 'em like crazy.
Totally agree with you Jeff. I just watched this and am blown away.... insane performance full of energy and emotion, will watching this one a few more times in the future and get some tips on how it's done. :)
Assisti a um clip deste maravilhoso grupo em 1974, e nunca mais esqueci esta batida. Peter Garret é fantástico, um showman, pena que hoje não temos mais o grupo, mas contamos com os parceiros do RUclips.
One of the best bands ever. Was lucky enough to have seen them in Canada in 1994. Peter Garrett got into a fight backstage with singer from Tragically Hip. Brilliant!
Awesome just awesome.. glad I grew up in the right era, saw the Oils NUMEROUS Times in RaDELAIDE.. mid 80's early 90's just Pure AUSSIE POWER.. ROCKING ON.. living on today, is WAY Better than most of the Crap were served up today...
Thanks for a great trip down memory lane. (Like many others I guess) all I have to do is close my eyes while listening to this at work on the other side of the world and I'm transported to Sydney in the 90s. The Oils live were magical: whether in small venues such as Manly Leagues Club, or venues as large as a packed SCG
Can't believe how much I miss the Oils! Living in London the last decade or so, all I need to do is to play a few tracks and I'm back, living in Sydney in the 80s and 90s, remembering all the great concerts they played. Thanks for uploading this!
I have to say, Rob the drummer is still amazing and my favourite drummer. Don't think much of the direct recording, seems to be missing the live sound and vibe. I bet being there would have been much better. Rob was at one of my bands gigs, lucky I didn't know till afterwards, I would have folded into a ball on stage. He was playing at Milton theatre and came over to pub across the street with the Break in his breaks.
Ideologia e Música é o que falta nas bandas hoje em dia. Midnight Oil is THE BEST muito bom essa é melhor das melhores Thanks for posting this! Man, they were such a ferocious and energetic live band. So good.....
Just amazing to see that no matter how much time passes, they remain a brilliant live band. I guess having played thousands of gigs on the way up in rough pubs will do that. Saw Cold Chisel reunited a couple of years ago and it was the same thing: just as much power and passion as ever. Makes most of what passes for live gigs these days look pre-programmed and anaemic.
Agree they played a small beachside city in wa in 96 incredible band. Concur with chisel saw them twice late last year as well as in 2011/12 and were as good as ever musically even got to hear one long day
I met him in Ashfield Sydney 1998 - waited for me to grab my mates camera .. really decent guy .Made my trip especially when my Aussie mates back in UK got my postcard signed off ps met Peter Garrett knowing how massive an Oils fan I am
Pete screwed up with Labour but I just love that an Aussie pollie could front a gig like this for all the right reasons! I just can't imagine this happening anywhere else.
This is the setlist that midnight oil played at wave aid read about it power and the passion king of the mountain say your prayers beds are burning the dead heart forgotten years best of both worlds
My favorite live rock band. Now that Peter Garrett has completed his career in public service, is it too much to hope for a new Oils album and North American dates?
I do miss hearing from them! Unfortunately, going from music to polly never works out well. The desire to do right by your constituents and the reality of polly, are very difficult to bring together without one suffering. Otherwise, this band will always be my number one choice!! Rob, Bones, and Peter standalone greatness!
Back in 1982 Midnight Oil played in front of Los Angeles City Hall at the street scene... and all hell broke out. It was one amazing night in California.
Lol curious on how you view it now......
back in 1985 Midnight Oil did not play in USA in 82 😉
Ich vermisse diese geile Zeit...war das n wahnsinn...so geillll
Oh Lordy,.....just cooks. We want more!!!
I still consider them the best live band I've ever seen...first saw them in Newcastle when they were promoting their first album way back when. Unbelievable show and they continued to get better every time I saw them. So many great memories and whenever I hear them I'm back in Oz...

Why do I smell soy in here

Never tire of the Oils, Jim Moginie .....genius
Most loved band in the world by their fans easily
When Pete jumps down to the crowd in The Dead Heart is absolutely beautiful.. he has pure joy in his smile after not playing live for years - you can tell he is enjoying and loving it..
Thankyou guys for the music and lyrics and for keeping it real.
I wish he was the Prime Minister... I trust him so much more than any politician ever .
"We carry in our hearts the true country" almost made me weep. How I miss Midnight Oil.
Oil's are kinda back this year 2020 new music!!...We all sadly miss Bones though :(
Dead Heart, powerful song..timeless
What a great act. Peter Garrett is the man, that voice!

+Jeff Elbel So do I.
Did you hear that the two guitarists and drummer formed an instrumental surf band with Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes? No joke...
Rick Vaughn Yes, The Break!
The wait to see them again: now much shorter :)
Totally agree with you Jeff. I just watched this and am blown away.... insane performance full of energy and emotion, will watching this one a few more times in the future and get some tips on how it's done. :)
Damn I love Midnight Oil
Beautiful live ....grettings off Poland
The outro to Power and the Passion is a storm! Gladys still rocks it!!!!! ;-)

Fantastic! Love the Modulus bass, sounds perfect for Power and the Passion. What a great band.

Midnight Oil is the most power and the passion. Love them eternally.!! 💪😍👂
takes me back to when Martin, Jim and Giffo used to absolutely tear it up on stage in the early 80's i.e Wanda Beach that kind of stuff.
Love it when an Oils concert pops into my feed. Thanks for posting!
I never saw them with horn section really cool great show.

muito bacana midnight oil, gosto demais dessa banda..
This band is so much better than the Stones! Yeah!! Listen up!
In the beggining when I didn't know about Oil's existence i used to think the songs were from Stones!!!
The voice made me confuse!!!
I wouldn’t go that far. I’ve loved the Stones music for 60 years, but oils are a close second. Awesome Aussie band
Fantásticos! São melhores ainda ao vivo!!!

Great songs, I worked for the people of the land. The haltered they have for each other hurts me. I come from slaves. Stop bitching and stand above

Total!!
Es un vampiro el vocalista, luce bien joven.
Alléluia
any director of a midnight oil concert should know when the drum solo of power and the passion starts.
Come on i'ts wonderfull
So MANY Great songs. That crowd should be going apeshit.
♥♥♥....
How about a new album fellas. Got the world tour outta the way....
Midnight Oil, probably the most awesome Aussie rock band of the 80s and mid 90s. More raw and powerful than... Cold Chisel and INXS?
× 100
i wonder if there is another Album in them now Pete has finished in Politicts ??? Please ; ) At Least a tour of Rural Queensland LOL
You kinda got your answer now!
