  • If you’re participating in the Reading Across Canada 2023 challenge by Jolene from ‪@BookwormAdventureGirl‬ I’m offering you some suggestions of books to try in French from Quebec.
    Francophone authors:
Books by Kum Thuy (like Man)
Chronicles of the Plateau Mont-Royal by Michel Tremblay (like The Fat Woman Next Door is Pregnant or Albertine in Five Times)
The American Fiancée by Eric Dupont
    Aurora Montrealis by Monique Proulx
Novels by Fanny Britt (Hunting Houses or Sugaring Season)
    Mad Shadows by Marie-Claire Blais
The Enigma of the Return by Dany Laferrière
    First Nation recommendations:
    Sanaaq by Mitiarjuk Nappaaluk
    Kukum by Michel Jean
Amun: A Gathering of Indigenous Stories edited by Michel Jean
A Tea in the Tundra, by Joséphine Bacon
Blueberries and Apricots by Natasha Kanapé Fontaine
    Crow Winter by Karen McBride
The Right to Be Cold by Sheila Watt-Cloutier
I invite you to also look into Turtle Island Reads and Kwahiatonhk!, two initiatives that celebrate stories by Indigenous Canadians. The Salon du livre des Premières Nations (SLPN) also happens every November.

@@hasteyebooks I can't say that I have a favourite but the two that come to mind are both written by anglos - Two Solitudes by Hugh MacLennan and The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz are both pretty great. I am going to add Kukum to my TBR - it sounds really good.

Wonderful recs and just in time for St. Jean 😊
Man is on my TBR, I saw it recommended to me on my library app (the app also highlights indigenous authors a lot which is great!).
Adding Bleuets & abricots to my list :)
    Great video!

Tres Bon!!! So glad that you chimed in on this because I need to learn more about Quebec authors. Kim Thuy's writing is unlike any other. Crow Winter is sitting on my shelf. I didn't know that Karen McBride was from Quebec. I've read The Right To Be Cold, but I am saving that recommendation for the Territories. So many great recommendations. Merci Beaucoup, Camila. 😊💙
