I get what you're saying here...but I sincerely think you need to hang with a different breed of black men if seeing two of them debate education of black children brings a tear to your eyes. There are plenty of black men you can engage in personally via volunteering, advocacy, etc who care about this not to mention political channels that have black professionals discussing this all of the time. Let's please stop putting radio personalities and entertainers on a pedestal they don't belong on. I guarantee you that DJ Envy has NEVER studied education policy or any longitudinal studies done on urban education. So why are we looking to him as a person with something legit to say about it? Killer Mike at least I can expect to have done some research because he has a track record as a political activist.
All Killer Mike is saying is, don't create excuses for yourself. You can be just as great in public schools as you can be in private schools, it starts with self. That's it.

Forbes out out a study that 65% of the HAVES were BORN in it. You'd think people would know that but no. People really think that most of the country is just lazy vs the design that is in place. We have the exceptions and the rule, yet people all think they'll be the exceptions. I guess you have to tell yourself something but when they get done, most people will not be rich. I dunno how much more proof we need to believe it.

Whew Chile, as a black male educator with two degrees...This interview has me triggered...I’ve taught in public, private, charter. Killer mike spoke no lies, public schools are and have the ability to be the BEST institutions for our children but we give up on them. I’ve taught kids who lack pride and confidence because they knew society viewed their school as less than. So they cultivate a less than mentality, they come to school and act out because they’re afraid to be challenged by people who they think don’t care about them. Then we have turn over because the teachers can’t handle them, then they have to hire anybody who is willing to stay more than a few months...It’s the mentality and lack of support NOT the schools themselves..
I 100% feel u brother but to Envys point, I myself went to the school he was referring to (Andrew Jackson HS in Jamaica Queens) and those metal detectors made us feel like criminals as soon as we touched the door. Telling 13 year olds to take your belts and shoes off everyday is wild. But in all I lean on Killer Mikes train of thought.

@@nandawalker9660 I'd argue we need more committed parents. I'm a teacher, raging black, living on the other side of the country down in Southern California. But my school district (San Bernardino City Unified) is in the poorest city of its size IN THE UNITED STATES. And it's not hard to tell which kids have a shot. They're the ones with parents showing up not to fight with the school, the teachers, the administrators, but embarrassed because their kids are being disrespectful. Kinda how it used to be growing up. If the parents aren't enforcing things at home in terms of prioritizing education, seeking out help if they aren't able to (a common problem)...kids aren't stupid. The balance of power is in their favor in today's education system. So if parents aren't doing their job, what's a teacher going to say to them. I'm as committed as anyone, but my mentor was a big burly black man with a doctorate named Joe Parks. And he taught us 12 years ago that no matter the teacher, in a class of 30, there are three students that excel regardless of what you do, and there are three students that fail no matter what you do. You are defined by the 24 students in between. And it's true. People wanna get mad, but it's true. I can't be more committed to your future than you are. Or your parent(s) are. The joy of what I do is seeing the kids who just needed someone to believe in them, grow. But they wanted more, they just didn't know how to get it.

A poor private school is better than a rich public school. People don't understand why public schools suck, they think it's just money. But the fact is that anytime something is "public", you have less control over it, than when it's private. This is why public bathrooms are often dirtier than private bathrooms.
Exactly. Public School systems are funded by property taxes. The higher the property tax, the better the school system. Imagine If everyone bought property within our undeveloped communities and flipped it. ✨

A lot of children that come from low income neighborhoods have problems at home that translate into how they behave at school. For anyone who didn't grow up in Atlanta or has never been to the A, it is completely different not growing up and not seeing YOUR people doing well. For that reason I agree with Envy. My wife is from Atlanta and went to Mays and out of her crew 1 is an MD, 1 PhD, on a Nurse, and 1 a pharmacist. Her 3 best friends not from ATL have PhDs and her brother is a lobbyist. Seeing black people own businesses and drive Benz and Bentleys on a common occurrence goes a long way. I never saw that growing up in Chicago.

If everyone could become a millionaire, then a million would be what indicates middle class. The market would adjust and a gallon of milk would cost like $100. Envy is greedy and he is teaching his kids how to play that game the way white folks do. So if you want Black communities that exist because of segregation and slavery to come out of a poverty trap you need the moneyed class of that community to reinvest in their communities and not get out of it. It's very akin to protectionism and the idea behind it. On a level playing field, free trade is THE best way to go. But it is NOT a level playing field and when after years of protectionism the countries that have all the wealth start talking about opening up trade with the ones that have none, the latter can't just open their markets to be drained. They need to build up their own base and make it so they are competent on the world stage.

Imo Comfort is not real. It's neieve to think it is a thing. In my opinion this is the wrong mentality to be selling to childeren today. We want to be comfortable, but that is not a reality we can afford. To be fearless is to be uncomfortable. We live in a capitalistic society. Life will only get harder and more expensive. If school taught us financial freedom more people would be happier. You have to learn it through example, from your family or your friends. To be an entrepreneur, you need to be fearless and even kids in the best schools from the wealthiest families are taught fear. We shouldn't want to be a billionaire. We should want to build something real that will give us wealth and security. If becoming a billionaire is the outcome then so be it. Do you think Elon is motivated by money?? There are many ways to do this. But at a minimum you must be patient, intelligent, humble, and charming to be successful. for most life is a slow battle to the top. People should not want immediate overnight wealth. Because such a thing is so rare. Mike is saying is that kids need confidence. This is a universal problem in any race, building confidence should be the whole point of school.
The public school is failing at this. The school you go to is something you take with you mentally, and can directly corelate to someone's level of confidence. At the same time you can have all the confidence in the world and be as dumb as shit.

@SlyiLaMusic Right. It's not the parents job or the communities job to make sure a public school functions on an acceptable level. The government cuts funding, food becomes shit, teachers begin to have to buy supplies for their students with their OWN money, teachers quit, gets replaced with teachers that are unmotivated, curriculums get cut because of understaffing. It's no coincidence. Yeah public schools will give you a good socioeconomic cultural enrichment, but it's FACTS that private schools will always be better equipped to bring their students into the real world with a running start. That's just reality.

We literally have to raise these kids in the classroom, I have been teaching SENIORS who read at a 5th grade level and have had them go up 7-8 grade levels in literacy. If you feel public school teachers are bad then you should take the INITIATIVE to get that teacher fired, vote in a new school board or take the initiative to make sure your child comprehends the subject matter to the fullest extent. Taking students from public schools does NOTHING but worsen the school due to lack of funding. Instead of taking children out, VOTE for school board or invest in someway in the public school ex. tutoring, PTA MEETINGS !

King King first you don’t know me or what I stand for my guy. I’m all for my people and understand how my ancestors was oppressed in a country they practically built. I’m aware of all of this, but if you watched the whole interview you’ll see that he’s talking about how the black community went from being good to bad. He’s talking about how businesses were closed, not because a white person shut it down, but because after the owner passed they person whom they left it to sold it instead of keeping it running. It’s no secret that the system isn’t made for most people like myself to be successful but it’s not impossible either. If we take some responsibility instead of always blaming the white people for everything maybe we can have more places like Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance, where black owned businesses were everywhere. Killer Mike saying just cause they want you to live like this doesn’t mean you have to. No one is saying look past 400 years of slavery, Jim Crow, or how we’re still treated today in America. He is simply saying it’s up to us to open more black owned businesses and put our money in black banks and support more black owned businesses. How many black owned businesses do you shop at? How much money do you have in a savings account at a black owned bank? How often do you tear down your own people? How did you do in school? How did you help the young brother next to you that was struggling in class when he needed it? Just stuff that a lot of people don’t look at. When we stop being so closed minded and expand our way of thinking maybe you’ll get the points that were being made my guy.

I earned three degrees to teach children who look like me. Most black educators were academically successful students. It’s not the lack of qualifications of the teachers but the lack of parenting provided for our students. Where are the seminars for training parents to train children to respect authority. Respect teachers! Where would you be without the village of teachers that invested in you?

Logically if you don't have natural aptitude mathmatically you're going to have a harder time learning, say, trigonometry or advanced physics in public school with 30 plus students in a class than in a private school with a handful of students. But it's also logical to say black students are probably going to be socially ostracized from a cultural standpoint.
Where Killer Mike has a point is the private school option isn't an option afforded to the typical black family so the argument they're having fundamentally based on a false dichotomy. If your goal is, as Killer Mike's seems to be uplifting the black community as a whole, then putting your child in these pay to play private schools doesn't address that at all. If your goal is, as Envy's seems to be getting your kid the best education you can in the now without taking into consideration the black community as a whole is to send them to private school. Staying within the public school system and fighting for greater economic investment in the public school system to bring educational parity with these private schools is better for the community collectively and society as a whole.
What we need is public school teachers like you to given the same tools and time available to allocate to individual students. I'm glad teachers are starting to strike and use their labor as leverage to gain funding and support you all should've been getting from the start. Also, thank you for being a teacher.
