You're one of the more idiosyncratic Tubers out there, so don't apologise for rough cuts. They have a charm in themselves. Only found you recently, but I'm really enjoying your warm, self-effacing, but enormously informative mini adventures.
Absolutely no idea why you're apologising for this more bare bones type of video. Was cracking, as ever. And the footage from the Go Pro did a top notch job of showing the stunning landscape. Raising a glass to the dear departed Hover. It's done sterling work. Long live it's, hopeful, successor
Thank you and I was pleased with how the footage came out. Always difficult to tell on the little screen when you’re there. New fake drone has arrived and just waiting for it to stop raining so I can test it out!
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd I'm trying to persuade my better half that it'd be a marvelous idea I own a DJI Mini 4 Pro. She has this misguided belief that repairing the decking on the home would be a better investment...I need Henry Kissinger.
Cheers Paul - I’m sure you can relate to this - as much as I enjoyed making last week’s video, in terms of research, travelling, filming and editing it was a massive job and I just couldn’t face that this week! It was fun to film a video with the GoPro, and in reality, in those conditions the only viable option!
We love your presentations, Darren. However, please don't knock yourself out for us. We'd rather have quality over quantity. I see that Paul & Rebecca agree.
I love this channel especially the quirkiness and humour. I love that you visit places that are out of the way. I hope that you'll continue just being your authentic self going forwards. You always post quality videos and I'm ever so pleased I found this channel as it's a highlight of my Sunday viewing. Thank you
You have to be the last person in Britain who goes sweating up and down mountains in a collar and tie with the top button done up! Congratulations on finding it. Great scenic shots.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed the footage - I really did wonder how it would turn out, but the GoPro did good, I thought. Yes, I expect words to the effect of "the last person in Britain who sent sweating up and down mountains in a collar and tie" to be my epitaph!
Really like your enthusiasm for the Lake District. There’re so many more things here than people ‘see’. Once your eyes are opened to prehistoric evidence, there’s a great deal to discover.
Yes indeed. On this week's video, someone actually told me they'd decided to bypass the Lakes because they thought there was little to see in terms of prehistoric remains....!
“It’s time for Hover Air to go in the bin……and have a rest!” 😂😂 classic!!! They do look like portal stones, however my knowledge of stone circles and cairns is severely limited as I’m a bus driver and those subjects weren’t on my driver training course (sadly) although my instructor did have a ‘granite’ face on him during my driving test. Stunning scenery and an affable host as always. It’s a 10 out of 10 from me 👍🏻
I'm glad you spotted that and liked it - I was particularly satisfied with that line! On reviewing the footage I'm inclined to see this monument as a ring cairn. Adam, who gave me the tip off has had a look at the footage and thinks the same. He's wondering if the two large portal stones are the remains of a stone row approaching it. With that idea and the interesting groove running up the side of the fell to it, I'll go and have another look some day, I think. Excellent description of your instructor's "granite" face. I could imagine it and felt a shiver!
Morning MrWC21…. The back to basics hike was a pleasant change and one which I encourage you to continue to do from time to time. Nothing wrong about mixing things to keep the interest up. Also please continue to throw in a hike from time to time, they are very enjoyable especially when you get drenched 😂 As for the fake drone, it will be sorely missed. It has provided many interesting moments. I hope it enjoys its retirement 😢 Nice that you toasted its health with a pint, of what looked like proper beer. 🍺 See you next week. 👏👏👍😀
Cheers Andrew! It was nice doing a simple video this week and I will still do these - probably will just run with the rebrand shown here as they’ve morphed into hikes to remote historical sites over the last year. That way I can keep the music too - a favourite of mine for its ostentatiousness! Yes it was a good pint and a proper pub too!
just a note for Darren ive got the x1 just give the battery a few weeks until completely discharged then a long charge with a few unplugs on route then it should be ok once more
Those opening shots made my heart leap, despite or because of the weather. The colour of the pool at Whorneyside was beautiful. Goodbye fake drone. Thought this was a great video, thank you, and of course why many of us started watching you in the first place.
Thanks Chris. Yes, even in the mist it’s beautiful. I was pleased with how the waterfall came out, despite mist and filming on the GoPro. I will do more of these, just with a light rebrand to ease my retentive twitches!
Great to see it in full motion! What an adventure - definitely one of my new favourites of yours. Spratt goes Gonzo. I’m more inclined to call it a cairn now I think… looks like a huge ring cairn. And those outer stones, maybe a jumbled row? Like the Kirk on Kirkby Moor. Also, you could rename this: The LOST Stonehenge of the Mountains! 😮
Cheers Adam and for alerting me to it. A very special place to visit - especially on a day like that. That’s a really interesting idea about a stone row and I will go back one day to have a look for more evidence of that. Since returning, I’ve become more and more intrigued by that groove that seems to lead up to it too. Now why didn’t I think of that name?! Imagine the “consumer dissatisfaction”, though. Thanks also for my new copy of your book - I’ve started comparing and it’s got a lot of new content!
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd the channel looks very interesting, reminds me of the one at Birkrigg. Sounds like someone needs to LiDAR it! Amazing the book arrived! It’s the least I could do for all the shoutouts. I’ll also be sending over a piece to camera on them lines…
Your videos are professional, humorous and informative. You deserve a medal for even attempting that climb in winter. What must it have been like for those that built it? The crows you saw were probably vultures, waiting for you to perish up there. That was an odd-looking drone.
@@ducthman4737 that's what my wife always says. I have left instructions that if things end for me on one of these sort of outings, they must say, "it's what he would have wanted"!
I think this worked brilliantly! Well done on still making a very slick video with a more basic filming setup, and I hope it made for less time in the studio editing. Very atmospheric scenes in that mist, I half expected gorillas and/or Sigourney Weaver to emerge at some point. The pub looked great! ...and that was a touching send-off for the HoverAir X1 - having held that little chap in my own hands I do feel a bit of a twinge of sadness at his departure, but all good things, etc... The circle/cairn looked great too - dare I (over)use the word "evocative"...? A spot I would love to sit at and cook an incongruous meal (Chilli con cairn-y?) and have a few glasses of Gevrey Chambertin. To me it wouldn't seem off topic for the channel to continue having videos like this which are a mixture of hiking with some antiquarian elements, but perhaps I'm biased as that's a big part of what I do on my channel!
Thank you Tweedy and you were with me in spirit on this adventure. With nothing to research in advance, I kept asking myself, “what would Tweedy do here?” You’d have been very welcome at the circle/cairn too - I was pretty hungry and only had a Nature Valley bar! You were also there at the Old Dungeon Ghyll - it’s on the Camera Heritage list and I think it’s an old stable that was converted mid 20th Century. An interesting insight to how they thought a hikers pub should be at that time. I did have a bit of a debate with a young hiking chap who worked the bar there. He’s a big fan of grapefruit beer. They didn’t have a traditional bitter - he says there’s no call for it and “things have moved on” - but they did have Theakston’s Old Peculiar and a local variation of that called Grasmoor, which was good. I will still do these hiking to a historical site videos - it’s just me being retentive because that wasn’t the original intention of this playlist. It’s morphed into that. I’m going to run with the slight rebrand, I think. Nobody will notice or care, I suspect!
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd Things have moved on...? That's rather sad! It's impossible to believe that a style of beer pub goers have been enjoying for generations can suddenly have "no call for it"...?! This sometimes feels like a kind of mass delusion!
It would be like going to a traditional tea room, ordering a cream tea, and then when the scone arrives it being topped with squirty cream from a can... and then on questioning what happened to the clotted cream being told "things have moved on".
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd I certainly hope that the "fake drone" HoverAir X1 will not be "going in the bin!" That would be a serious waste of parts on that expensive little toy that any local Model Fliers' Club or High School Science Group could make greatly appreciated use of. 😉😊
Oh, and the parapeted depression to the immediate left of the "cairn" (13.56) 😂brought back memories of Old Fossils Capt Mainwaring and Co dutifully manning the last bastion against the Huns!😂
Wow, I have to say you definitely take your viewers to some stunning locations. That waterfall has got to be in top hundred most beautiful I’ve ever seen. Thanks!
Thanks Torsten. It is one of my favourite waterfalls too. My wife has swam in it in late March one year, when we had a fantastic warm day before the next dump of snow!
Most certainly not a “fail.” Thank you for braving the elements to bring us yet another amusingly entertaining video. BTW, really nice inn/pub find! R.I.P. little drone. Wonderful video…wouldn’t be Sunday morning coffee without Mr. WC21…CHEERS!!!🍻
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd On the one hand I was pleased to see the Climber’s Bar doesn’t look like it’s changed in the past 50 years … but where are the inebriated scruffy climbers that always filled the place? .. the same groups that repeatedly had to circumnavigate the bar without feet touching floor .. lest they had to pay for the next round? I can honestly say that I’ve never seen that bar so empty .. even in January. When the bar staff say that times have changed, I wonder if the true reality is that the visiting demographic has gone sufficiently upmarket that they’re no longer satisfied with camping in a muddy January field and seek hot showers followed by an exotic avocado based breakfast dish rather than a traditional fry-up as a morning start. Those of us living in the area around the Glastonbury Festival site have witnessed the same level of gentrification … was a time when trying to drive anywhere on the last (Sunday) night was worrying because of the number of motorised wrecks with magical smoke billowing from windows weaving along the queues of cars … now those same queues of cars are full of new or nearly new BMW or Audi cars with gleaming paintwork and drivers looking down their noses at us local riffraff in our 10 year old diesels lest we scratch said gleaming paintwork or choke them on unfashionable diesel fumes. To be fair … you do now have to be pretty affluent to afford the ticket prices.
Thank you very much. It was nice to do something simpler for a change and I couldn't do any research in advance because nothing's ever been written about this one!
That's great. The simpler edit seems to have been well received so far, which is good for me as it would be helpful to be able to do a few like this every now and then.
I thoroughly enjoyed the back to basics vid this week. With stunning scenery as your backdrop what more would one need?. A truly fascinating (if somewhat moist) site and a bit of the miracle you found it at all in the mist. May your dear old drone rest in peace.
Thanks Phil and I was amazed I found it too! Studying the satellite images it looked to be a way off from that groove running up the fellside, but in reality, that took you to it. Good job, really!
Superb video Darren. Thank you. The back to b seemed the only workable solution in that climate and terrain and Lady Fortune was deffo with you on this trip. I'm hoping our galactic neighbours had the common decency to drop you back at the pub and stand you a pint and not leave you five miles away from anywhere, dazed and confused.
Thank you and yes, back to basics was the only option with this. The GoPro and my phone did OK! I found myself on a roundabout in Kendal two days later. Bit disconcerting!
This is truly enjoyable and beautiful to watch. I love it when the crows fly ahead of me and gather farther along the tree line. There was no "terrible camera work" It was all authentic and sometimes tracking is not necessary. I know you are a pro through and through but i stagger along with my mobile phone. I was thinking of investing in a little drone 🤔 Honestly, this video just took me back to my Lake District visits. Thank you so much for the work involved in showing us this stone circle.
Thank you, Christine. I actually used my phone for a few of the shots in this and it was nice travelling light. If you're thinking of a little drone, be careful, you'll be on RUclips before you know it!
Thank you for yet another superb offering, Darren! I particularly liked the atmospheric opening scenes - amazing stuff! Don't pay too much attention to the occasional verbal stumble, they are all part of you, and your style, I love 'em!
Cheers and glad you enjoyed it. I thought the terrible conditions gave it a great atmosphere too. I make those mistake noises on every one - perhaps I should include them more often!
Having subscribed for a while and watched for lots longer, If I may: I honest to goodness had no thought that you aspired to any production values aside from lovely chewy content. I don't have any opinions on camera-work ('tho curiously I do seem to have opinions on almost everything else.. ). So go on, dyb dyb dyb, and it's all wonderful. Thank you. ❤
Thank you and I normally do slightly more complex camera work than here, but the break really came from having nothing to research as nothing has ever been recorded on this fascinating site! Thanks for your support and I like “chewy content”!
Reminds me of an old episode of the classic American "Mountain Monsters", the one where they track down the green Lakeland Devil Stomper...wait a minute!!! Great video, fabulous scenery, and something antique at the end, perfect!
An unscripted super video.. 'Straighten and encased' best phrase on this weeks video.Great video as ever...and best part is that the circle will stay secret given the clouds masked everything.
Thanks David and glad you enjoyed it. The dry stone walls are quite distinctive. They mostly date to the 18th and 19th centuries, but there are prehistoric examples too.
Thank you and glad you enjoyed the simpler edit. I couldn’t research this one as nothing’s ever been said about it! I’ve been obsessed with aliens at stone circles since watching Quatermass with John Mills, for some reason!
Rambles with an antiquarian? Liked the immediacy re the filming, sitting in my warm dry living room drinking a fine Gevrey-Chambertin, almost felt like I was also a drowned rat! Seriously, great film, rarely venture north but have made a note for possible future visit. Thank you as always.
Because i came to your channel late , just before xmas 24 , i find it very entertaining that you tube throws random back catalogue videos at me and it could be a rambling one or Roman or coastal . I think they all have equal merit , but whatever you choose to concentrate on is ok by me Mr WC21 uk productions ltd
Thank you John! I’ll probably just run with that slight rebrand for these - it’s only me that’s noticed they’ve morphed into hikes to historical sites over the last year or so!
Hello Darren, Finally got round to watching your videos they are fantastic and your voice is spot on for listening too ( I listen to audio books a lot and you should do some) look forward to more videos. Thank you and great name by the way BR Daz From Essex making the dinner.
Couple of things, we did that walk a couple of years back minus the circle, stopped at the NT campsite, my mrs doesn't like the campsite cos it's "Always raining". Dungeon Gill, many a youthfull camping trip mostly blurry. When I last went in there I asked for lager, they gave me a funny look and pointed out the 200 craft ales etc. I know of 2 circles about that size elsewhere in the lakes and have wondered what they were, not on maps. On top of Gummer's How.
I love that, "always raining" - we can't really argue with that! I think there're plenty of these unrecorded monuments in our uplands. This one shows up really clearly on Google Earth. As a traditional bitter drinker the Old Dungeon Ghyll could only offer me ale, but that was fine. They are great fans of all the micro-breweries, I think. That stuff is not for me - with all its grapefruit!
@@WC21UKProductionsLtdim too old school to be a fan of modern hopped IPA with botanicals or whatever the artificial flavouring is, especially at £8 quid a pint in London.
Loved this one. To me, it came across as a whimsical yet real/gritty piece. The terrain has a stark yet beautiful vibe. I need to get up to the lakes again, and do some rambles. Thank you for creating and sharing
Cheers Jerry! Yes, you’ve captured it well there - it is stark in the winter, but beautiful too. Amazed I found the circle in that visibility too. Hope you do get to the Lakes soon.
Your video brought back so many memories ! We once set off to go up Crinkle crags in slightly drizzly weather, however half way up the rain began to come down "in stripes" ( that's the only way I can describe it) it crept through every crevice of our clothing and we were soaked to our skin despite good waterproofs. After battling for half an hour with the wind and rain we looked at each other and both said"Pub" at the same time. Never was a pint more welcome !
Thanks for braving the elements to bring us this fab little adventure. Site shows up well on google maps, and the entrance to the small enclosure is NE. As usually discussed in archaeology and aniquarian circles, and if the site is of the prehistoric variety, NE is usually associated with the 'R' word (ritual if other viewers are unaware). Possibly the Solstice sunrise if it's the remains of a cain or scraped out barrow. Or is it something more prosaic like a robbed out sheep fold. Who knows? Anyways, good find (and tip off from Andy).
Thank you! There’s always the “sheepfold” worry for me with these sites! But on this occasion, I’d say not. Adam and I think it’s probably a ring cairn and the stones outside the circle may be part of a stone row. I’ll go back at some stage - in clearer conditions - and have a look around the wider area. That groove running up to it is interesting too!
RIP fake drone, you've served us long enough. Loved the patch of snow! Thanks for sharing your antiquarian adventures with us. Surprisingly colorful hillsides for January. XO from SW Colorado
Yes to historical hikes and antiquarian ambling, and also yes to your historical videos when you can spare the time for all the fancy touches. I was able to find the stone circle in Google Maps, and Whorneyside Force is not located anywhere near where GM thought it might be. So it was fun solving the puzzle of the little track hooking off to the left. It looks like there were other faint traces of circular features nearby, or perhaps they were alien landing sites.
Thanks Ginny! Yes, doesn't the circle/cairn stand out clearly on the satellite images?! All the more surprising that no research has been carried out on the site, really. I suspect you are right - more to discover up there! Cheers.
Enjoyed the back-to-basics. It is so tempting to edit everything but sometimes I do the same on my channel, just leave it more natural with the sounds of nature
Thank you. It was interesting to go back to this for a change and much quicker to edit! Felt a bit weird using the GoPro as the main camera, but again, so much easier in those weather conditions. No doubt I’ll be back to the mammoth edits next time!
you go through stages of civilization as you ascend to the cairn. signs and gates. horse and cows. Norse sheep 🐑. but in the mist, there’s the circle. with large stones at the entrance. just the beginning.
I think that form of content works really well, don't worry! It actually puts into question (once again) the immense amount of gear I lug around when I go out filming. Even the DJI Action 3 you missed so much isn't as important to the viewer as your actual story, which, once more (virtual lifting of hat inserted here) is excellently researched and presented! I wish I wasn't so tied up with "day-job-duties"...sigh...
Thanks Matt. This simpler edit seems to have been well received with regular viewers and I'm delighted with that. Presents me with the occasional lower workload option when I really do need to free up some time for other duties! Hope you are well and get some time off soon.
Really enjoyed this one The mist shows what the Lakes are really like. ( no insult intended, ) Having spent many days walking/backpacking , it brought back many memories I could almost feel my feet squelching in my boots 😂 Thanks Darren.
Perfect weather for a secret stone circle loved the video, going off at a bit of a tangent 'The 'Devils Ring and Finger' on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border appears to have very little information or research done on it with conflicting opinions, Cambridge History department has an early map and or plan of the site but it's subscription only i.e. behind a paywall, have you considered looking into this monument? new subscriber.
Hi Darren, Totally enjoyed that, I was marvelling at the views each time you commented about "not being able to see it" or "appalling camera work" - I think you've been watching too much Tweedy!! I hope you'll continue to do hikes like this even if (especially) if they are just for you, or perhaps even morph them to another channel. But no worries you decide, the field for ant aquariumism is so wide you won't get bored and that's before you even leave Lancashire. I liked the view through the two large rocks to the cairn, maybe they were already there? It creates an entrance way or at least you could imagine there being one. Top marks for finding it Well, RIP the fake drone, I think it's done stirling service for you and might not have deserved being called a fake, I mean you hadn't tied your camera to a tethered balloon!! Hope all is ok at home, saw somes gusts of 97mph on the coast at Workington (courtesy of Nodrog) and there was still an excavator working on the seashore, quite literally digging his grave, sorry digging his clava cairn!! All the best!!
Cheers David - glad you enjoyed the simpler edit. As much as I enjoy making videos like last week’s Roman barrows one, they do take a lot of work. A huge amount of research, travelling, filming and a massive editing job. There was nothing to research on this circle because nothing’s ever been written on it. I just had to find it! I will absolutely do more videos where there’s a hike to get to remote sites, but I just felt this playlist had wandered off from its original purpose, which was just to film challenging hikes. I will almost certainly relaunch it as “For Historical Hikers & Ambling Antiquarians” and keep the music and branding otherwise the same! Thank you for asking about the storm. We’re fine. We were down south for a funeral on the day it struck, getting back yesterday. Thankfully the garden looked just as messy as before…
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd Good idea, reading the comments, people do enjoy this part of your channel, I certainly do. Lots of alternatives like doing shorts, or live broadcasts (see History Chap). Another channel I follow (Parkinsons Walks) does a new video every two weeks and in-between another one where he reads out comments from the previous videos and comments on them and pastes on an archive film at the end (abandoned railway alert). Thanks for another entertaining and informative video. That is one of my favourite parts of the world, even on a day like that. I will try to be a bit more observant next time I head for the fells.
Cheers Steven. I wonder if I'm the first person to go there for years. Off the tourist trail up Bowfell and you'd only end up there if totally lost in reality.
@WC21UKProductionsLtd I was up that way last summer and, from Langdale, I went up Bowfell; out via the Band and back down Hell Gill past the force and a mob of wild swimmers. I don't recall seeing that path but, as you imply, you have to be really looking for it. If you found a water bottle up there, btw, it's mine - I slipped on some scree I hadn't spotted, landed on my (fortunately, well-padded) arse and hadn't realised the loss until I got back to the curiously named Stool End farm. And it was a warm day, so into the Dungeon Ghyll for a couple of pints of shandy before driving home. But Bowfell at any time of the year is worth that small hiccup.
@@stevenholt4936 I love Bowfell and hope to get up there whilst it's in snow this winter season. My new favourite way up is via the Climber's Traverse and Great Slab - it's wonderful. This circle/cairn is way off the popular routes and you'd only really stumble upon it if very lost!
Yes, definitely a ringed cairn by the look of it, Darren. I love your channel and hiking, too. I understand if you just specialise, but it would be nice to see the occasional hike and natter, but that is just my opinion. I had purchased the Hover Pro but then saw all the issues with it and cancelled my purchase. They did ask me why, and I stated as above. They said they were aware of issues and were working on it. £750 was a chunk of change to lash out on a Hover with a known issue. Will you be buying another X1 or going full drone and license with the channel. Irregardless, another great video which always brightens my Sunday, and I do like the 'back to basics' format. I hope they didn't probe you. Thanks for sharing, Darren.
Thanks Chris. They dumped me at that pub two days later! I was very close to going for the HoverAir Promax, but there are so many videos and comments suggesting ongoing issues. Just started to convince myself the DJI Neo would be good enough and then the DJI Flip came out for about £100 more than that. So that's the one I've gone for. Looking forward to getting to grips with it when it stops raining! It has all the palm launch capabilities of the Hover and Neo, and can be manually controlled from a phone too, but also has a controller. The camera is much better than both of those, so hopefully it will do the job for me for the next couple of years. Good luck with whatever you choose.
Watching this in Western Australia where the weather today has dopped below 35 degrees for the first time in a week, such a relief. Now, where was I? Oh yes the Lake District in January ...
Very enjoyable sir. Saves us the effort of getting wet 🤠. At least you could avoid the plague of turists in that weather. Sometimes is best to stay relatively local for videos and as for editing people don't realise what a chore it can be. Great "new" format.
Cheers Leslie! I just needed a break from the heavy stuff this week and there was nothing to research because nothing’s ever been written about this circle/cairn! It was fun just using the GoPro and my phone too!

Hi Darren, the simpler (but still very skilled) filming and editing is absolutely fine, despite your tweedy-esque remark on "terrible camera work".😊 The mist provided a natural special effect in this impressive scenery, and you kept us on edge whether you'll find the hidden stone cirlcle/embanked cairn. I'm glad that you apparently escaped another alien attack since you reported back unharmed from the pub after the incident.😀 Please do a new series combining hiking and ant-aquarianism!
Thanks Kathi and glad you enjoyed the simpler edit. I needed something a little easier after last week! It’s weird, I ended up at the pub two days later?!
The becks up Langdale were "canalised" in the 1960's after a very bad flood "event" (modern term) I remember seeing many of the walls in the valley flattened by the force of water. RAW Darren was no less engaging! ATB Alistair 👍
Oh wow, I didn't know it was as late as that. In other parts of the Lakes they're now reintroducing the natural course of rivers to try to slow the water down. Thanks for your feedback - much appreciated.
Oooo! you missed a perfect opportunity to regale us with that Peter Andre classic , a Darren rendition of "Woha Wooha Woh mysterious Cairn I wanna get close to you". But do you have the abs :) Excellent as always and if you had not mentioned imperfections I would not of noticed them so all was fine .
Having no knowledge of Peter Andrex this comment sounded more like that Tom Whatshisname song to me, you know that one - “What's new pussy cairn, whoa-a-whoa-a-whoa-ah” :D
Excellent. Keep it simple! (To be honest the ufo does nothing for me but hey, I’m not everyone & I ‘get it’). However the good lady wife enjoyed it too! One of my favourite areas to camp, so we’re defo off to have a butchers for ourselves this year. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks Trevor. I was wondering how many years had passed since someone last visited that circle/cairn. The tourist route takes all the traffic and I imagine only the hopelessly lost end up there. Thanks for your forbearance with my offbeat asides. I’m obsessed with UFO abduction at stone circles on account of the 1970s Quatermass with John Mills. For some reason! Please let me know if you ever do visit the circle/cairn.
Yes indeed. Some circles became ring cairns later on too - which always adds to the challenge. But I am thinking ring cairn with possible stone row, now I’ve reviewed the footage. Cheers
@@hedleythorne er no, still fake and I'll largely fly it from my phone like the coward I am. DJI Flip. HoverAir Promax has too many issues and is too expensive. DJI Neo is good value, but you've still got the grubby footage issue. The Flip does all the same palm launch stuff and can be flown from your phone (which is mainly what I did with the X1), but has a controller too. Camera quality is same as the Mini Pro. It's only £400 with a controller. Let's see how it goes....
Great video. In the drone images, it looks like theres a pair of entrance stones facing down slope before your two large stones. Interesting though. Perhaps Adam can provide more context ?
Thanks and yes, Adam thinks we may have a stone row! I’ll be going back at some stage to investigate that, the groove - which I’m thinking may be an ancient path leading up to the circle/cairn - and the wider area, because I think there may be other unrecorded monuments around it. A great little find.
Excellent - it certainly looks like the remains of a ring cairn. Presumably there'd have been a round pile of snall gathered stones, that's been taken out, and an inhumation of some sort, perhaps in a cist, near the middle. I know a couple of unknown stone circles a little north of Alston but they're not very photogenic or complete. The Alston henges would make a good story - I know, 'don't call them henges'. Earth circles doesn't sound the same ...
Hi David, yes on reviewing the footage, I think it's a large ring cairn. Adam has said the same now he's seen it. He's also wondering if the two large stones marking the entrance are the remains of a stone row. I like the sound of the Alston henges and will add to my list of inspirations. I love filming on the North Pennines.
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd Thanks - there are three Neolithic circular embanked monuments near Alston town centre. Lockdown LiDAR combined with decades old observations from the bus. The large one - that I found and named - has the main road to Brampton passing through, with a house in both halves. The man that lives on one side was chuffed to find he owned half an ancient monument, which has the characteristics of a Double Entrance Henge. At this moment we have no published photos of any of them - just aerials. Dryburn Henge is also nearby, a couple of miles away and nearer to Garrigill. The large one responds to the name Raise Henge. Thanks again ...
The truth is out there. Thank goodness your battery lasted long enough to capture that mysterious (possibly alien?) object at the end of the video. 😂👍🏻
Note* 👽No Ant Aquariums were harmed during the abduction process and Darren was returned home in time for his milk and cookies supper! R.I.P fake drone 😢Doesn't look like a stone circle to me but I know very little on the subject. Awesome as usual anyway, thank you 😃👍
Thanks for your good wishes Martin. Found myself at that pub, but two days later?! Having reviewed the footage, pretty sure it's a big ring cairn now, as opposed to stone circle, but in reality, the differences in these things that we don't really understand, are often slight!
If you purchase an Insta 360 camera and a 3m selfie stick you could capture drone esq shots, walking shots and complete landscapes without needing to move the camera. It records everything in 360 degree view, the software deletes the self stick from the video and then in post edit you can choose which view (from the 360) you wish to show
Thanks. I have considered adding one of those to the collection of gadgets! On this occasion it was the relentless drizzle that dictated use of GoPro. The Pocket 3 would have been ruined that day! I actually quite enjoyed the simplicity of it.
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd yes it would be a 1 camera solution for handheld, selfie l, landscape and a faux drone (especially directly above the circle). It’s also water proof and you can purchase (which of course the manufacturers want) is a protective case that would further protect it from drops and scrapes. Nothing wrong with the Go Pro and as always detailed and humour content and production. Thank you .

Great scenic shots.

Your hard work, humor, and knowledge are much appreciated. Never fear, your audience is here.
Thank you Dianna - really appreciate that and thank you for your support.
Your videos are hard to resist. I look forward to them.
Thank you that's very encouraging to receive feedback like that and I appreciate it. Spurs me on!
Great video.
Your usual editing is great, but this video was just as enjoyable as your more highly edited videos.
Thanks Daniel! It was fun - and easier - to make!
nice tweedy mention 😂. what an incredible landscape. stunning really. would love to discover a cairn like this. greetings from bay area, california.
Thanks @earinsound and glad you enjoyed it. Yes, a stunning landscape - even in the mist and rain!
Morning MrWC21…. The back to basics hike was a pleasant change and one which I encourage you to continue to do from time to time. Nothing wrong about mixing things to keep the interest up. Also please continue to throw in a hike from time to time, they are very enjoyable especially when you get drenched 😂
As for the fake drone, it will be sorely missed.

@@kevinbennett5220 oh thanks for that Kevin. I'll give that a try. They coped great with sub-zero temperatures last winter.
Also, you could rename this:
The LOST Stonehenge of the Mountains!

With nothing to research in advance, I kept asking myself, “what would Tweedy do here?”
You’d have been very welcome at the circle/cairn too - I was pretty hungry and only had a Nature Valley bar!

I really appreciated the grid references . I found it on Google Earth!
It’s actually quite clear on Google Earth, isn’t it? Makes it all the more strange that nobody has ever bothered with it!

Thanks Bobbily. I thought the landscape came out quite well, despite the weather. There's a beauty to these fells even in the bleak mid-winter.
Cheers.
We've had days on end of temperatures in the mid 30s, with some days 40C+. I find your misty, rainy, soggy british landscape very relaxing.

Hi, thank you very much. I like the sound of the "Devil's Ring and Finger" right up my street. I will add to my list of inspirations.
Top marks for finding it
Well, RIP the fake drone, I think it's done stirling service for you and might not have deserved being called a fake, I mean you hadn't tied your camera to a tethered balloon!!
The axe factory was a great example but also those barrows in that valley which made you feel uneasy (forget the name).
Last weeks was a jumbo edition, a Christmas special (a bit early I must admit) perhaps you could have made into two parts? don't burn yourself out on the editting.
I hope the wind blew at least some of the leaves out of your garden, probably blew your neighbours leaves in though!!
@@davidberlanny3308 cheers David - yes looks like the regulars are giving this a thumbs up - so a breather option. I'd rather not miss a week as I know a lot of regular viewers make a point of looking out for the video on Sundays.
@@WC21UKProductionsLtdQuick lunch at Scary Prehistoric site!! and you had that one on your rambling group too.
I honestly don't think you have to do a video each week, as much as I really look forward to them. Your followers won't go away, you only have to read the comments to see that. Just set it up with what works for you best.
Just been watching a new video from Patrick Dickinson this afternoon, I see he was mentioned today in another comment. He is one of only two channels that I've gone back and watched everything (Martin Zero the other). Be careful he is addictive and you'll be off buying a tent before you know it. I'll be chipping away at your back catalogue too!!
@@davidberlanny3308 yes that was the video - one of my favourites, actually. I got freaked out there and had a handwarmer that was more suitable for an Instagrammer, as I recall!
I've taken a note to look at Peter's channel following that earlier comment.
Super dooper. Thank you
Cheers and glad you enjoyed it!
Top video! I think I heard a reference to the good old "ant aquarium" at one point?
Thank you and yes, it was "Ant Aquarium". It's what one of our subscriber's daughter calls me, apparently!
Watching this in Western Australia where the weather today has dopped below 35 degrees for the first time in a week, such a relief. Now, where was I? Oh yes the Lake District in January ...
A bit of a contrast then, Andy! Actually, I didn’t really feel cold that day - just a bit damp. Amazed I found it in that visibility too! Cheers
I like hiking so I like your hiking videos.
@@raedwulf61 cheers - they will continue - with a bit of a rebrand to reflect the historical element. That will address my retentiveness!
Hey Darren, Yes give yourself a break and maybe do an office based Q&A… chat to the subscribers type thing … ?
Good episode still my friend ⭐️⚔️⚔️🙏😎👏👏
Thanks Andrew. It was good to keep it simple this week. Back to mammoth edits next week I suspect!
@ don’t burn yourself out mate …. Your content has been so high and I know you are pulling in new subscribers now (including me!).
Plan well and know you have supporters for the future ⚔️⚔️😎🙏
@@andrewlamb8055 thanks - that is much appreciated!
@@WC21UKProductionsLtd 😄Obviously after you were released by the aliens.
@@JustcallmeKathi 😆yes that...!
7:21 motion sickness warning 😂
Yes, I should have put a warning about that. What an absolutely useless thing that editing gimmick is!
Oooo! you missed a perfect opportunity to regale us with that Peter Andre classic , a Darren rendition of "Woha Wooha Woh mysterious Cairn I wanna get close to you". But do you have the abs :) Excellent as always and if you had not mentioned imperfections I would not of noticed them so all was fine .
Cheers Joe. I do vaguely recognise that song and may well learn it for a future rendition!!
Having no knowledge of Peter Andrex this comment sounded more like that Tom Whatshisname song to me, you know that one - “What's new pussy cairn, whoa-a-whoa-a-whoa-ah” :D
@@thorisrain I'll give that a go too one day!
@ HA HA yes that one works :)
Top video that
Thanks Ian and glad you enjoyed it!
A hiking rebrand for dedicated Ant Aquarium ramblers sounds one hell of a side channel.
Yeah, a potential side hustle!
First-time viewer and new subscriber. Outstanding video! 👍🏻🎅👍🏻
(Should someone call Tom Baker to rescue him? 🤔🤣)
Thank you and welcome! Tom was busy celebrating his birthday, but fortunately I was dropped off at the pub - although I had lost two days?!
Reminds me of Yockenthwaite stone circle which may have been a ring cairn.
Yes indeed. Some circles became ring cairns later on too - which always adds to the challenge. But I am thinking ring cairn with possible stone row, now I’ve reviewed the footage. Cheers
Fake Drone may be saved by a new battery and a firmware update perhaps? Love this location in the Lake District, I used to tramp around here myself.
Firmware is updated but batteries are dead below about 5 degrees now. Which is most days here! His replacement has arrived…
@WC21UKProductionsLtd Ooh did you get a big, meaty, manly drone like mine?
@@hedleythorne 😱
@@hedleythorne er no, still fake and I'll largely fly it from my phone like the coward I am. DJI Flip. HoverAir Promax has too many issues and is too expensive. DJI Neo is good value, but you've still got the grubby footage issue. The Flip does all the same palm launch stuff and can be flown from your phone (which is mainly what I did with the X1), but has a controller too. Camera quality is same as the Mini Pro. It's only £400 with a controller. Let's see how it goes....
@WC21UKProductionsLtd ah that's the new DJI drone isn't it. Nice.
Keeping it real, as they say 👍
A little bit of unfussy antiquarianism! Cheers.
Only just subscribed, but loving the content, thank you and keep it up!
Thanks Phil and glad you found the channel. Cheers
Did you deliberately say “antiquarium” in the opening seconds? Seems appropriate.
Yes. The young daughter of one of our subscribers calls me the "ant aquarium".
I like it when you use he GoPro footage. It feels like I am trekking along beside you. Bloody Victorians with their canalisation of rivers.
Thanks Jane. It was a nice change keeping it simple this week and so much quicker to edit too. Also practical in those conditions too!
You rascal, you just couldn't resist that bit at the end could you?
No I couldn’t! I blame Quatermass.
The truth is out there.
Thank goodness your battery lasted long enough to capture that mysterious (possibly alien?) object at the end of the video. 😂👍🏻
Yes what a relief! And they didn’t drop me back at the pub for two days, but there was still enough charge to film that bit!
Superb episode. Are you trying to emulate the great John Noaks?
Thank you! What a hero he was to so many of us of a certain vintage. I’d be honoured to be compared to him!
Love your content. You should team up with Patrick Dickinson
Oh thank you - I will check out Patrick’s channel.
Thank you .
