- We spent a cloudy rainy day installing a automatic chicken door opener for our new hen house.
This is where we got Automatic Chicken Door:

This is the chicken door I installed. There seems to be a lot more
out there to purchase that are of higher quality but at a high cost.
I did notice that when temps are cold like freezing the actuator (the deal that raises the door) seems to lag. Sometimes causing the door not to open and close all the way. I wrapped mine with a 3' heat tape that comes on at 45 deg to stop this from happening.

Thats A Nice Door For the Chickens ! I Like the Sensors How they work ! Nice Job !
Petes Little Homestead - thank you! We don’t have our chickens yet but I’ve been testing it every day and it seems to be working well.
Oh and the nest box is gorgeous Josie!
R Spryng Farm & Country - thank you! I’m anxious to get it installed and see how the red looks against the white siding!
@@OzarkMountainGoats it's going to Pop and look so pretty! Those hens are gonna be so spoiled, I love it!
Love the nest box 💕 I need to show my husband the door so he can put one in our coop. I love this idea. Thank you for sharing ~ Shelly
T & S Dog's & Dragonflies Farm - thank you! I think an exterior box will make gathering eggs a lot easier. 😊
My searching has ended, Thanks So Much for your video. I found this similar Vevor kit on Amazon for under 120 and it works as advertised with fobs included(batteries sold separately). I hooked mine up to a 10 watt solar panel and battery rig. I made a larger door from an old STOP sign and installed the door sideways. I get to sleep late in the AM again, Yippy! I also used plastic screws on the powerful actuator that will break off if the sensor fails and a bird gets in the way. Also we don't get snow here, just snow birds. This system could be a problem for some folks up North.
In the winter I taped a heat tape to the actuator because when it gets (in the low 30s ) it slows down. With the heat tape it works great. After about a year the electric eye at the end of cable stopped working. I bought 12 cheap eye sensors on eBay and it works perfect again. Have a great day!
You guys are a hoot! I want one of these so bad. Right now I just have a pull string but maybe soon! So neat!!!
Mulberry Branch Farm - lol, thank you! I hope it holds up with daily use. I guess time will tell 😊
Technology just gets better and better, great video and can't wait to see those baby chicks!
R Spryng Farm & Country - doesn’t it though! Should only be a couple of weeks now for the chicks! 😊
Always wanted one of those but they are to much for me. Was thinking about making my own but gave up. Lol. Looks great guys! Have a blessed week!
It’s a good investment for sure!
Wow! You are making me rethink my chicken coop!! 🤣 I wish we had an automatic door, we’ve looked at it, but we actually just leave ours open to their run and let the donkeys stand guard!
I've heard donkeys do a good job at doing that. Your probably safe!
OMG don't be so cruel to you wife like that! So what if she has insomnia and spend her time watching over the chickens, that no reason to call her a donkey.!
@@OzarkMountainGoats I heard that if you have chicken or sheep that having a lama is way better. They eat the same stuff that chickens and sheep do plus the health issues are also about the same. They are a pack animal. They are also taller and can see better at greater distances. Their poop is also much more manageable and usable. The very best thing tho is that they are not as loud.
I am speaking from a research level no actual experience. I was all set to buy a llama but some dogs got through the fence, my two sheep I just purchased were in, and killed them. I wish the LLama was ordered before the sheep came. Sigh
Wonderful! I love the nest box too, fancy!!
Rocktopia Acres - thank you, we’re anxious to fill it up!
It seems like decades ago we had chickens; but really it hasnt. Moving to a suburban area was hard and thought we couldn't have what we did; but now we are learning we can have more than we thought we could so chicken this year for us. Awesome content yall share with us, and I truly appreciate yalls transparency. Blessings Yall
Yaaay Good to hear about chicken. I haven't had any in 40 years so I'm so happy to be getting them again! Thank you for very kind words and blessing right back at ya!
@@OzarkMountainGoats cant wait to see you next video..
We definitely want one of these eventually
Copper Kettle Farms - hopefully it will hold up and work out well for us!
That’s a great door, wish I had one. Great job.
Kaz Bleasdale - thank you, we’re anxious to use it!
I’ve been wanting to get an automatic chicken door. Good video!
UNPOLISHED GARDENS - thank you! So far, so good!
That is nice. Have a wonderful week.
Stacie’s Country Cooking - thank you! You have a great week too!
Love the hen den!!! 💚 ... y’all are fueling my chicken fever 😂😂
Mimsy’s Garden - thank you, we’re anxious to get them!
The bungees are a nice addition! Lol!
Ernie Hatmaker - lol! 🤪
Great on over framing that door... Me Likey!! I generally don't like the "store bought" door kits, but this one I like. Not so much the actual door. It's a bit thin and not tall enough. The width is OK. I have a setup that does the same thing (safety feature) but it is done with just relays, no other electronics. Well except for the Timers or Photocell modules.
That’s a cool thing to have in a coop! Never seen that before.
Cooper Family Homestead - thank you, hopefully it will work well for us!
Having a good helper makes all the difference in the world. Can’t have that war page.
Serenity Meadow Permaculture - thank you!
Looks good Jim I hope your chickens know how good they got it
Jordan woodworking and diy - lol, me too! Nothing but the best for the girls!
😂Love the name!
Ernie Hatmaker - yay Hobby Lobby!
Your chickens are spoiled :) nice job - Ruthie :)
I was gifted an Amazon card so I bought something I usually wouldn't have. Thanks for watching!/ Jim
Good video
Michael Harris - thank you so much! 😊
Can you show how you wrapped it in heat tape or what that looks like? Where do you buy the sensor? Love the build, thanks for sharing!
I'll try to get a picture and put on here tomorow.
Ozark Mountain Goats we got ours installed today but I have it unplugged and won’t let it close unless I’m watching bc there is no safety stop. The sensor is an awesome idea! We won’t have cold weather until November but the heat tape seems like a great idea too.
@@explaincauseidontgetit3294 The sensor came with mine when I bought it. I have seen them on the internet. I'll see if I can find one. Thanks
@@explaincauseidontgetit3294 Here is a link to the sensor that mine has. I'm not sure if it be the same one you need or how it would hook up. I took a picture but it didn't come out and now it's pouring rain. Will try again tomorrow. You may have to copy and paste the Amazon address below. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C4S4XRX/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATCVC199CHVK0&psc=1
Does it have some kind of override for when one would have a power outage?
It doesn't come with one but it works off of 12volt DC it would be easy to have a battery back up. Or you could do as I did and put in a manual door on another wall just in case. The other door leads to a completely enclosed pen they will use when they are young. Thanks for checking it out!
Santa!!! I found you..
LOL
Have any issues with that photocell? Even after adjustments mine wants to close too early.
Yes I did. It took a while but I had to replace the cell. Got one off eBay real cheap. Just a couple little wires on the end of a tiny cell, Wired it on and it was good to go!
How did you set your timer? Did you make a video for that? lol
Thanks but this door is automatic. It opens at dawn and closes and dusk. It has a light sensor. Thanks for watching and wish I knew more about the timers on the ones that are not. Have a wonderful weekend! /Jim
How's the door doing so far? How far, away can the light sensor be mounted?
We turned it off for the summer but prior to that it was working fine. Not really sure about the distance as we have ours right next to a window with the sensor mounted in the window. The cord is a few feet long.
Great video! What brand is the door opener?
I just got mine off of Amazon. Here is the link. www.amazon.com/dp/B085KZZ8FP/?ref=exp_ozarkmountaingoats_dp_vv_d
I have bought the exact same one but my door is bigger cause of my turkeys. I was hoping you would show how to attach the long opener since it’s flat on one side. At the bottom of the box it has gaps where the wires come out. Moisture get in? Or did you fill something in it? I guess I was hopping to get a look at some detailed things.
My box was mounted on the inside of chicken house so I didn't have to worry about gaps. If your mounting on the outside of house I would use a little silicone. I hooked up rod to door and then turned on power and opened the door completely then unhooked power. It will stay extended! Then I knew where to mount the upper screws on the top bracket of rod piston. Hope this helps, if not send another message. Thanks Jim
@@OzarkMountainGoats I’m about done with the electric door. But, the bolt attached to the door that rises, when it goes up it keeps getting hung up from behind, on the coop. Any suggestions?
@@jamesphebus761 Is there a way to reverse the bolt so it sticks the other way? If you send me a picture maybe I can see and help a little more. This is my email if you want to do that. catfishjim1954@gmail.com
Thank you for the video. What is the minimum height for the door and actuator?
I will have to measure again it's been a while. I'll do that today! Thanks
Need to allow at least 42" high 18" wide for the model we have. Thanks
Ozark Mountain Goats thank you I appreciate your time 😊
Hi, I have a quick question regarding modes. If i set the timer for 6:00 open and 23:00 close. What will happen if I close it at 20:00? Will it remain closed until next morning 6:00?
Another unit reopens after 3 mins .. I'm hoping this unit stays closed when i manually overnight it when i close the door.
Preferably i would prefer to only have a open time and no close time, as i would like to close it manually each night.
This unit as far as I know only works by a light sensor. I'm not sure how sensitive it can be set. I do know there is an adjustment of sorts. Wish I could help you better on this. Good luck.
According to the instructions you attached the door upside down, but it works, so you got away with that!
Yes depending on your overhead area it will work either way. As long as you allow for all the open and closing stroke it doesn’t matter. If you do a seach on these type of products you will find that most show in pics the connection at the bottom of lower part section of door. Since this video I have moved chicken door to a different part of chicken house and because of head space I used the lower section hook. Thanks for your comment!
I just installed this today. Can you show how to calibrate the remotes?
To be honest I never calibrated it. I hung up the clickers and have never used them. At this point not even sure where its instuctions are. Sorry I wish I could help. Didn't think I would ever use them so didn't bother with it. Ever since I installed mine, this is the first time I have even thought of them. Sorry!
I have one of these, mine has the timer though that has a clock and you set the times you want it to open and close. The remotes on mine were already paired, but there should be a button on the controller that you push, a red light comes on, then you simply push the remote open and close buttons.
Will that sensor on inside let it open if the chicken moves in front while closed
If it is closing and a chicken or any movement gets in front of sensor it will stop and reopen. Then in a few min. will try closing again. Thanks for question.
Your door is upside down. If you flip it bolt down the actuator arm doesn’t have to be that high.
You are correct about being higher. The reason I did that is because in the winter the actuator gets slow and sluggish. So I wrap it with heat tape so that it will function properly and is out of the way of door. Thanks for comment, Jim
@@OzarkMountainGoats Thanks for the Video. I live in Vermont and I'm shopping for an automatic door for my Duck coop. I'm looking at this one as it has a door that's big enough to accommodate the Pekin variety. Given we routinely see -20 in the winter, do you have any other problems with the actuator in cold weather? Any problems with ice jambs etc? Do you have to wrap the entire arm and motor with tape? Thanks
@@SkyHigh8800 no I just ran a short heat tape down one side and covered with metal duct tape I picked up on Amazon. The tracks are on inside and outside coop has tarp over it. If I were exposing it to freezing rain I would build a canopy or tunnel over outside wall of some sort. Thanks for watching.
The link for the door to Amazon is broken. What brand is the door?
I'm pretty sure this is the one we got. www.amazon.com/VEVOR-Kits-Chicken-Door-Opener/dp/B086L44YSK/ref=sr_1_50?crid=16NCORB05Z30S&keywords=chicken+door&qid=1654902618&sprefix=chicken+door%2Caps%2C340&sr=8-50
All that wiring will be chewed up by mice
3 years and hasn't happened yet.
There are substances, some synthetic, some all natural, that mice hate and just plain taste bad. Like Fig plant "juice" not from the a ripe fig but a green unripe figs and the leafs and stems. Stuff like that that will not break down the insulation. If you are that worried you can us that. Or get some metal flex conduit.
