      @@roosevelttasteofamerica9183 ours coop has electric so we bought a motor for $100.00 and it is plugged into a timer that ran about 5.00. If you dont have electric in your coop you could go solar . So far ours has been going for about 10 yrs without fail.... Good luck with yours.

      Roosevelt Taste of America we made our own too, with a motor from amazon, plywood for the door, and ball bearing drawer slides to guide the door up and down. We ran an extension cord too our coop to power it (and the light we use to keep the girls laying in the winter). I’m definitely going to buy this Ladies First door though. I’m no electrical engineer so changing my current one to solar is way out of my league. Also, we have two turkeys with our chicken flock now and I think they’re messing with the string that pulls the door up (they are very nosy and curious birds lol) bc I’ve found the sting detached several times. SO glad I found this video!

    I used a cheap electronic magnet a spring and a timer really super simple if you have power to your coop not self closing but we need to check the chickens a couple times a day anyway so this was a really good compromise for us ...the spring I used was just a screen door spring $3 at TS ...the door magnet was Amazon I think less than $15 and any timer with on and off will work ....All told it was less than $30 and foolproof! I set the timer to energize like at 5pm and turns off at sunrise time....we simply go down every night and make sure door is clear and just pull it closed so the magnet holds it then with the timer denergizes the spring yanks the door open! Cheap and simple! You could also use a 12v magnet and a battery and have a little solar charger to charge the battery ....worse case if the battery crapped out early the door simply opens as opposed to the fully automated doors which I would just stay closed ....a disaster if you are away on a weekend

    13:11 This is a very nice door however the safety feature needs work. I do not like that the door continues to go down. If a chicken gets their head in the door and the door stops, when the bird moves it will go down more then stop. Each time the door get lower and the bird will panic and harm themselves. Better to just stop and wait a few seconds then continue Or go back up then try again.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  Год назад

      I guess you could put a 6 volt DC adapter and connect it right to where the batteries are. But the door going up and down is controlled but the solar panel. When the light is too low, the door goes down, and when there's light, the door goes up.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  5 лет назад +3

      I've never had a problem with it. Lightning won't effect it, the light has to be constant to trigger the door. The door closes about 20 minute after sunset, and it's getting pretty dark by then.

    • @brendasivado7099
      @brendasivado7099 4 года назад +2

      I’ve had no problems with either of those issues. I even shined a high lumen light on the solar panel without triggering the door. Yes, it has to be almost completely dark for the door to close, like total solar eclipse dark. Even that wouldn’t last long enough to trigger the door.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  2 года назад

      I would unplug the solar panel and with a test meter, make sure you're getting 7 to 8 volts coming out of it in full sun. You should plug and unplug the solar plug a few times to make sure you're getting good contact. Also make sure the wires are connected at the solar panel. Get new rechargeable batteries and charge them on a separate charger and reinstall them. After some time, the battery contacts and plug contacts start to corrode, you'll need to plug and unplug them to make sure they are making contact.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  4 года назад

      The solar panel charges the batteries and acts as a sensor. When the panel stops producing power after sunset, the door will close so many minutes after that depending how you have it set. And when the the panel starts producing power in the morning, the door opens.

      I built the coop and run under some oak trees so they have lots of shade in the 100+ degree summer. You shouldn't hate the sun so much because you need to get some sunshine to produce vitamin d3 under your skin and it really helps with our mood.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  4 года назад

      A light to open the door would have to be fairly bright and on for some time to make the solar panel produce enough power to trigger the door to open. There's no way to adjust that, just make sure the solar panel is not near or facing a light.
