Liam Esterly yes, but then have you seen John Smith's who lock, by using different clips and piecing it together on top of the original soundtrack and with visual references from the telesnaps. Maybe, possibly, they can be re-imagined, renewed.
One of many beautiful but sad moments in Doctor Who history. Hartnell delivered a flawless speech here and it remains one of the most iconic to this day! Nice job on the colorization.
@@Warriorcats64 Well, the time of when she was taken from earth by Borusa was 20 years after the events of the scene shown in this video. Just to clear up any confusion.
It doesn't matter how many times I see this clip, I feel tears well up. It really is quite touching, it's that wonderful mix that Doctor Who always seems to have had, adventure and excitement but with some underlying human problems and emotions thst draw you in further. Have to say the colour change made me feel the same as when I first saw The Wizard of Oz.
I love that quote. Hartnell had some really good quotes but that one always sticks out. It shows the doctor before he was truly mad (Jodie and Matt Smith). He was just the old time lord who ran out out of fear. Running till days end.
This is surely one of the most dramatic scenes in all of Doctor Who history. When I first watched it with the entire episode, I couldn't help my tears. It just makes me want to go back and thank William Hartnell for all he did and gave to Doctor Who that made the show what it is today.
My favourite bit about this is actually the re-scoring. Would love to see the whole original series rescored with full symphonic orchestra. Not that the original score is bad in any way.
Oddly enough, I couldn't disagree more. I really thought the scoring was unnecessary and detracted from the visual and the speech. It may just have been mixed too high.
As a moving image archivist, I have to say that it's not a restoration in any way, it's a colorization. It's an enhancement. It's an artistic interpretation., It isn't restoring it to what it ever was. That said. As a fan of Doctor Who and VFX, I have to say that it's impressive.
Imagine colorizing a B&W image in Photoshop. Once you have the colors in though, it involves tracking movement and adjusting the shapes of the colored areas... It's not hard per se, just time consuming, even if you know what you are doing.
정말 환상적이네요! 비주얼 이펙트로 이것저것을 만들기를 잠깐 재미삼아 해봤었는데. 이젠 진지하게 배워보고 싶은 마음이 드네요. That's magical! I used to make vfx things for fun. But now I want to study it earnestly.
Okay I have freaking goosebumps this is one of my absolute favourites when it comes to farewell speeches but to re discover it this way makes me fall in love with it all over again. You are so amazing, I dont know how you do this but you need to do this as a professional!
Andrew Chapman You can see the doors behind him and how the seams between the doors aren’t present as the pattern is truly copied as opposed to being perfectly correct. Still stunning, though.
@@krozjr5009 He did not copy pattern, he created new one from scratch. Also tardis rotor is new, and doctor is blurrier than he was in original clip from official BB youtube channel
I love how he kept his promise, even his Eighth self went and celebrated Christmas with her even though it got hectic! THIS WHOLE VIDEO IS AMAZING!! XD
Amazing work. As it expands from 4:3 to 16:9 it's just brilliant, like a magic trick suddenly wrapping around you. Hartnell's teeth looked a little bit too red.
Omg I teared up a bit. Obviously I prefer colour to black and white, but I never knew just how big a difference the colour and music could make. I think I have a new level of respect for Hartnell's acting and his portrayal of the Doctor now!!
The TARDIS interior wasn't intended to be green, it's just that that particular shade appears whiter than actual white when filmed on the B&W studio cameras. Something to do with phosphorous glow... I forget now, read in an article in Doctor Who Magazine in the 80's.
If you colourise and HD a classic scene like this....why the fuck cant BBC do that to full episodes? I would love to buy full boxsets of colourised HD episodes of Hartnell or Troughton. Hell even refilm the lost episodes with David Bradley as The Doctor (second doctor still dont know if there is anyone that looks similar enough to play him)
Color WAS available. Star Trek Original Series came out 3 years later (1966) and it already had better graphics than that of DW in the late 70's. It's not that the technology was unavailable; financing is what Doctor Who lacked. It was forced to use the old black and white tapes and crummy special effects due to a small and constrained budget. That's why episodes were destroyed in the first place, to save money by reusing old tapes.
This is incredible. Remember that this scene was shot on standard definition videotape, and the original tapes are long gone, wiped by the BBC decades ago. 1960's Doctor Who episodes exist now only as kinescope/film recordings, which do by no means represent the quality of the original tapes. On top of that, I'm guessing you probably used the official DVD as the source of the footage (I doubt you have access to the BBC's vaults and film prints), and DVD's, a standard definition format, compress the already bad source material even further. So basically what you have done is, you have created an HD version of the DVD of the (bad) film copy of the original standard definition source. That is simply amazing! I always thought we would never see classic Doctor Who in HD. If we had the original studio tapes and location film at our disposal, then perhaps, but with the subpar copies that remain, never. You have completely changed my mind, sir!
I love that speech, and seeing it fresh and new like this makes it even more moving. As someone else said, would that all the old B&W episodes could be reissued in this way.
Another great video! I'd love to see a breakdown for this showing what plugins and techniques you used for extending and colorizing the original footage.
I really love your works, they are amazing! It will be the best think i ever seen if you will do some old episode like this piece... but i ask so much right... Or not? :')
This makes me want the Hartnell and Troughton eras colourised and fully restored like this and released on Blu-Ray!
You are not alone on that statement :)
Except the for their lost episodes that cannot ever be seen again.
This is the way forward. Purists will say no way, but it will re-energise 60s Who and open it up to a younger audience.
Liam Esterly yes, but then have you seen John Smith's who lock, by using different clips and piecing it together on top of the original soundtrack and with visual references from the telesnaps. Maybe, possibly, they can be re-imagined, renewed.
And translated in some other languages.

"One day... I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back."
Welcome back, THE Doctor.
The original, you might say!
If the BBC ever decide to bring Susan back in any shape or form - regenerated or not, they should put this at the start of the episode.
well they did exactly that in The Five Doctors
@@oisinjadran But that was with the first Doctor. She and Ace really ought to return under either 13 or whoever Whittaker regenerates into
@@Warriorcats64 Well, the time of when she was taken from earth by Borusa was 20 years after the events of the scene shown in this video.
Just to clear up any confusion.
God i hope they bring susan back, but not regenerated
@@definitely_notme4112 They already did with Big Finish

"Emotions, Love, pride, hate, fear! Have you no emotions sir?"
John Smith, are you working in the VFX industry? In any big studios?
I could've sworn I heard that the BBC was actually hiring him for the demat video but idk
Liam McGrath i hope that's true !
It depends. What do you prefer. Comp or FX?
senpai notice us
well he has just created the opening sequence for Jodie Whittakers series of Doctor Who!
For the 61st anniversary, they should release a remastered version of An Unearthly Child.
As a moving image archivist, I have to say that it's not a restoration in any way, it's a colorization. It's an enhancement. It's an artistic interpretation., It isn't restoring it to what it ever was.

loneraver2 He also enhanced the audio as well, then.
***** I think that's David Bradley's interpretation of William Hartnell.
APZRman1 No, his was off from the original.
He didn't enhance the audio, he just made it sound tinnier at the beginning for maximum effect.
This, song with the rest of your videos, make me incredibly happy. Thank you for continuing to make them.
HOW HOW HOW?!! How did you do that? Amazing. Imagine a whole episode like this!

Galiant2010
Extremely frame by frame time consuming.
Sk2k52 Not necessarily. You don't have to go frame by frame through the whole thing.
Except for messing up the main doors, this is very well done.
Many people have probably already said this, but this is incredible! It's one of the best colourisations I have ever seen, we'll done!

Honestly, the BBC should hire you to colourize the entire black and white era and release them on Blu-Ray asap.
with one person and all of the black and white era, that would probably take years
My Dream
One day i shall come back . Amazing how certain things sayings can stick in ones mind for decades
one of the most famous speeches in *all* of history. thank you for creating this.
As a fellow restoration enthusiast, this is this best job I've seen!
Beautiful. The way in which the video expands as the colour came in brought a tear to my eye
Well, that nearly got me crying. Next project - a full episode?

0:20 WOOOOOOOOOOOW!! How the hell did you manage to add more detail for the 16:9 presentation?
by adding detail
because its a simple pattern
Whether it's simple or not, it's still an amazing technique.

really amazing to see such an Iconic scene from the Hartnell era in Color
