Hi, can we use saw dust mixed in the worm chow instead of cardboard to balance the C:N ratio? should we pre-ferment the chow before putting it into the worm bin? some say that these dry foods are concentrates and produce heat and nasty smell which can kill the worms?"
1) yes, but be aware of whether the wood was treated or not or from particularly acidic trees or green wood versus aged because that can have an impact 2) I didn’t ferment but you’re really just sprinkling a small layer. This isn’t like a regular feeding where you’re putting a pound of the stuff in so I wouldn’t worry about fermenting it first.
I used a lot of the same stuff to feed my worms I have rabbit's and feed the worms the rabbit droppings and the bedding I clean out of the cage it has alfalfa hay and some rabbit feed I also make a worm chow its the same as you make but i add a garden blend rabbit pellet feed to it also the chicken starter feed the worms really like the stuff
I want to get some rabbits just for this but I can’t justify(yet) adding another animal to our farm. But hopefully soon I’ll find a way to incorporate a rabbitry to the worm bin process
@@OurSustainableJourney if live on a small farm I'v got lots of animalsI used them for meat the droppings is very good fertilizer for gardens and the worms eat the left overs from the cage when I clean them
@@joshslackslack8115 absolutely. I’ve considered the meat rabbits for awhile, it just makes sense and I think it’s more sustainable (and delicious) than other options.
@@OurSustainableJourney why have a lot and all kinds of animals on are farm the rabbit do taste good I sell them mostly and use them to make compost/fertilizer I'v tried to get my farm to make me money with anything I get i am trying to start my own compost/fertilizer business
What an awesome experiment, Steve. Thanks for your efforts to set up this comparison.
Bonus dad joke FTW!
I use rabbit manure . It can be used fresh and I use shredded paper for the rabbits , since I get lots of newspaper donated, nothing sprouts .

Maybe if you had shown the results you would have gotten more interest. You tried I appreciate

@@joshslackslack8115 they say the secret to making a million dollars on a farm is to start with 2 million dollars 🤣
I used bird seed.. and grind it up
Oh I’ve seen that. I have a ton since we stopped putting it out with all the bird flu stuff going around. I’ll have to try that.
