    The woods is the best therapy. They tell me the arctic ice caps are melting so 32 degrees is right around the corner since we are experiencing a polar vortex in Ohio. Right ???? It’s minus 15. We will survive. I subscribed to your channel.

    I keep some of my outdoor bins in my greenhouse over the winter. On a sunny day, it feels like Florida in there! We haven't had temperatures below freezing yet, but the worms would definitely slow down if they were just kept outside. I like to keep them working 😉 ~ Sandra

    Yeah... i didnt trust their stand. But they do peovide instructions on how to build a stand out of 2x4s and pvc, and you can put that on casters. Its very convienent for small scale vermicomposting. Either for home scale or small market garden that is using castings to make small batch worm tea. I have been pleased with my UWB set up like that.

    I've put in my first order - 1 lb of nightcrawlers - from Uncle Jim's and was wondering how they'd look and what would need to be done off the bat with them, so thanks for the video! Both the reds and crawlers you got look very active. Just wondering why they all seemed to have a concerted effort in both colonies to try to push the lid off from all directions and escape? 😂

    • @OurSustainableJourney
      @OurSustainableJourney 2 месяца назад

      They all seem to explore at all times. It’s quite annoying. Doesn’t matter what size bin or what is in it, they always seem to find their way to the lid. It’s not a problem unless ALL the worms you have are on the surface/lid. Otherwise they’re just curious.

    I use about 60/40 compost to shredded paper and cardboard. Once established and need to make a new bin the mixture is 50/30/20 compost/shredded paper, cardboard/material from established bin. I do not soak the paper, I simply spray it as I add it to the bin. Same with other materials I add. Lay some down and spray it, repeat with whatever bedding you are using. I also spray a water-molasses mix in the bedding where I add food. Not much, but it helps the microorganisms and the worms like it. I never get leachate from my bins, I never let them get that wet. I also use a cross cut shredder om my brown paper and boxes from Amazon. It creates small pieces which are faster to decompose and be eaten and they stay fluffier due to the cut of the shredder since I do not soak the material.

    Your compost appears as though you could use a tub grinder before stuff gets put into the compost pile. That would break up the branches, newspapers, bones, and what not. Do you have a compost turner?, or do you just use your tractor bucket to turn your piles?

    • @OurSustainableJourney
      @OurSustainableJourney 2 месяца назад

      We turn it with the tractor pretty regularly. Still labor intensive there but buying a compost turner is not in the budget. A tub grinder would be neat (I’ve considered them) but the scraps always break down so well it’s not an issue.

  • @jasonmarks4521

    You keep teasing me with little tidbits of how your food scrap operation works. I have learned so much from watching your videos and asking questions. How do you dump those big food scrap bins? You can't be manhandling all those every day? Are your drivers regular employees or friends and family? Do you have more employees that work on your farm for the dumping and cleaning the buckets and bins? Thank you so much for the insites to your operation. I wish more people did what you do. There are so many landfills getting filled with stuff that should not be in there.

    • @OurSustainableJourney
      @OurSustainableJourney 2 месяца назад

      Bins are dumped manually at the moment, but we’re working to engineer something that can auto dump from the tractor but we’re about 1/2 way through building it still. As for drivers there are 8 of them(unrelated to us) that get paid hours and mileage. On the farm end my daughter cleans the buckets (paid hourly) and I clean the bins (free labor).

    The giant totes seem much easier to deal with for the day to day feeding and fluffing. Harvest time, however, seems like way more physical work. I have been waiting to see you sifting a big tote to see how you do it. I hand build harvesting tech in my garage to make very little physical work for me with my bin. I have a 2'deepx8'widex4'tall cft. I'm planning to build a second one very soon. The plan is to have four of them with room to park my pickup still. I'm still fine tuning my harvesting. I just did the business consultation with our state rep. I am working on starting a green waste composting company in my city. The thing that is scaring me about it is where to sell the castings, besides on the internet, and can I create enough castings. I would love to sell wholesale.

    • @OurSustainableJourney
      @OurSustainableJourney 2 месяца назад

      They’re pretty labor intensive but being able to shuffle them around the farm here to where it’s easier to load/unload is what I like about them. I’m still working on scaling up my harvesting but am working on something similar to a Grizzly rock screen but at a lower price. As for selling we actually ran out this year so I end up cutting people off. Just keep adjusting price till you run out. We don’t offer it in winter mainly because I don’t like sifting in the cold but otherwise we dont have any trouble finding customers, but because of the food scrap biz and selling eggs/beef/pork we have a ready list of customers.

    Hey Steve, I have the standard Rubbermaid totes, no holes in the bottom, no lids. Most of the time they are indoors but, because our house is for sale, they are outside. I also have a stacking tray system, a turtle shaped children's sandbox worm bin and four in-ground garden worm buckets. I haven't seen a CFT system I could use because I'm limited in my mobility (I'm a wheelchair user) and it looks like you have to be a gymnast to harvest those systems! Welcome Nemo! ~ Sandra

      The CFTs require a rolling cart to get under them for harvest or a special tool from above but wasn’t too bad once you got used to it. We have a lot of moles and groundhogs in our area so I’d be worried any unground worm bins would get eaten.
