My worms are not into avocado like other worms are. They'll eat it but I've yet to get an "avocondo" out of one yet. Lol. My worms LOOOOVE squash! #1 squash and a close #2 is pumpkin. 😊
also zucchini I cut them into pieces and scatter the seeds over the entire surface, the seedlings sprout and they are nutritious for the worms. Dandelions will appear soon, and the worms love them too. I also lay down sand, it is also useful, and I collect soil from the forest - it contains many micro organisms. I grind egg shells on a grinder - the worms' favorite dish. I cut cardboard into not very small pieces, worms lay eggs in them - an ideal place for a new happy generation. 🇨🇦🇺🇦✌️🪖
Thanks for the information 😁 They don’t mind cold weather though. I raise worms outside even in the winter. They are in large bins on soil with no bottom and I cover them with leaves and wood chips.
Thanks for watching. Yes, I'm sure they're fine in the winter, but they're kind of like my pets at this point, and I worry about them being outside, but I know it's probably fine. Thanks for watching.
I can see why you like fluffing your bin - lots of healthy worms! Did you mention banana in your list? My worms get a lot of banana peels and the occasional rotten banana. The other thing mine really went for was cornhusks from tamale. That was a fiesta! ~ Sandra
Yes, Sandra. I'm not sure if I said bananas or not. I kind of got lost in the food items, but... Yes. Anytime you eat tamales, it's a fiesta whether you're eating it or the worms. I haven't fed no tamales to my worms yet, but I might have to try it.
Just started adding "worm chow" to my bins this winter, really fattened them up. Picked up a 40lb bag of chicken crumble and have been putting it through my coffee grinder. Grew a $hit load of birdhouse gourds last year and ground most of the seeds up too, worms ate it up. Have you any concerns regarding pesticides in melon, apple, pineapple and banana skins? I add those materials to a hot compost now, probably over doing it. Stay Well!!!
Mango really got mine excited.🎉 worm party and swiftly devoured. I have a large commando worm bin that I built and also pick off greens, arugula, etc…and drop those in the worm tubes of my grow towers. They make short work of the snack. Btw, San Merazno, is he related to San Marzano? 😉 Thanks for sharing your experiences and love of worms. I tend to stir mine up also and I get tickled to see worm balls. I tend to find them when I give them fruits and rich avocado.
It sounds like you want to put your worm tea aerator into the worm bin to aerated it. Probably better than not aerating it at all, but I like the way you think, and it's those kind of thoughts that make the world a better place, and always trying to innovate and make things better, because that's how everybody gets better, and the world becomes a better place. I still do it by hand for the exercise also to see what’s going on down low in the bin thanks for watching and commenting. I hope you have a great worm day!😎
I do not place large portions of anything in my bins. Get too wet, can smell as they are rotting, they attract flying critters. Banana peels #1, cut up and smashed but do not use food processor. Lettuces, alfalfa (small amounts), oats, cornmeal in their worm chow. Apples, mushrooms. Nothing too smelly.
Perlite doesn't contain any nutrients for the soil, so I don't think it would do much, but you probably could put it in there as long as it's not the kind that has other fertilizers in it, like at some of the big-box stores, their perlite isn't just perlite if you read the fine print.
Many microbes love living on perlite. Not for nutrition, just a nice homebase. Not to mention it helps aerate bedding. Making for happier worms @HarleysWorms
Yes, mangoes would probably be way up there on the list, but we usually eat the mangoes and they don't make it to the worm bin, and I am guilty of buying them pre-sliced, but I'm gonna try to get them whole, that way we can give the shells to the worms. Good point. Thanks for sharing. Manures will be covered in a future video.
My experience is that these are definitely the most loved foods for worms but they also always cause mites in my worm bin. Especially the avocado. Do you see large mite infestations with those foods and if so, how do you combat?
Wow! nice list. Pesticides? I put 2 bananas in a jar last Sept., there is 3 inches of liquid and the bananas are still yellow. I have never opened the jar. Do you think the liquid could be diluted and used as a fertilizer?
Yeah, I've looked into the Bokashi system, it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me other than like it's a pre-compost system, but I've had good results feeding my worms directly instead of pre-composting.

My worms get quite a bit of banana peels, which they seem to like. I also feed them small amounts of sourdough discard when I get too much
1. watermelon
2. avocado
3. pumpkin
4. canteloupe
5. kiwi
6. leafy greens
7. apple
8. pears
9. squash
10. carrots
Thank you for your service!

I juice once a week and the love the pulp that comes out! and they eat it super-fast. Almost just as good and blending your scraps.
Yes! We don’t juice much that way we get to eat more fiber in our human diet. 😂

I'm surprised that banana didn't make the cut but carrot did. For my worms it would be in the top 5 for sure.
Nice video.
Exactly, banana and banana peels is the number one worm food.
Great tips. You can also make a drinking game on how many time you say ...and. lol keep making vids. Your worms look amazing
They love corn on the cob!

Yes, avocados might be the worm's favorite food, even more than pumpkin.
Avocado 🥑. Seed sprouted then ground up. Corn, Quinoa, barley etc
Is it possible to aerate the worm bin via an air pump and bubbler like you see in small fish tanks for a few minutes a day ?
It sounds like you want to put your worm tea aerator into the worm bin to aerated it. Do they like grass? Like blender of grass clips perhaps?
They love grass.
Can you use perlite mix with peat moss for bedding
I'm not sure the perlite would do much in the bedding mix.
Microbes would like it@@HarleysWorms
Perlite doesn't contain any nutrients for the soil, so I don't think it would do much, but you probably could put it in there as long as it's not the kind that has other fertilizers in it, like at some of the big-box stores, their perlite isn't just perlite if you read the fine print.

Raw Potatoes 🥔 always makes a wriggling mass of worms
Yes, potatoes are pretty much everyone's favorite food, and the worms also probably enjoy it like we do. Very hearty meal.
Yes, but they should be cooked, not raw.
Awesome!
Where would mango and manure rate ?

@@HarleysWorms thanks, i am enjoying your videos, cant wait to see the manure one
Thank you. It means a lot to me. Thank you for watching.
What kind of mix soil you prepair?
We sell it on our website.
My experience is that these are definitely the most loved foods for worms but they also always cause mites in my worm bin. Especially the avocado. Do you see large mite infestations with those foods and if so, how do you combat?
We have went over how we combat mite infestations in an older video called How We Maintain Our Worm Bins. Thank you for watching.
Do mites not also decompose the food to great soil?
Wow! nice list. Pesticides? I put 2 bananas in a jar last Sept., there is 3 inches of liquid and the bananas are still yellow. I have never opened the jar. Do you think the liquid could be diluted and used as a fertilizer?
Probably but I wouldn’t put it on my favorite plant or anything.
I feed my worms the well fermented scraps from my Bokashi system that have been mixed with a carbon source, My worm population exploded doing that.
Yeah, I've looked into the Bokashi system, it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me other than like it's a pre-compost system, but I've had good results feeding my worms directly instead of pre-composting.
Is it true they don't eat the actual food but eat the bacteria that feed on the food/fruit?
@@taxusbaccata6332 They eat both the food and the microbes, thanks for watching!
Sir, the plastic is not too hot for them?
It's not that the plastic was too hot for the worms. It's just that we're moving away from plastics in general in the worm bins and the garden.
Have you ever feed chicken crumbles to your worms?
How deep can a worm bin get before it is too deep for breathing
We are working on a worm course that should be ready soon and it will answer this question and more.
Big fat happy worms 🪱🇳🇿
I work at a restaurant so l have access to leftover oatmeal. I think the worms like it as much as watermelon
If you work at a restaurant and you have worms, you must have a pretty crazy amount of worms with all the food scraps.
Are u grower reds
@@Robert-dh3xg We are growing red wigglers. Thanks for watching!
Seems like banana would of outdone carrots
You mentioned kale. Has anyone of your viewers ever tried rhubarb leaves? I know they are poisonous to humans but worms???
It’s probably not a good idea for worm food.
You forgot banana 🍌
✌️😎
Too much protein is a common way people mess up.
Those are fat worms
