Wouldn’t call this “easy”. Was your sink mounted using SCREW-IN mounting clips???
CANNOT beLIEVE - ADHESIVE-ONLY is even an option for having to support the ENTIRE weight of such a HEAVY SINK - not to MENTION the weight of it being filled with WATER and/or (for kitchen sinks) heavy DISPOSAL, DISHES and POTS! - DESPITE the existence and acceptability of relatively cheap and easy SCREW-IN mounting clips methods!? Whoever decided that was an IDIOT and/or GREEDY / CHEAP MEGA-BUILDER that had too much influence on the construction standards committee!? NO ADHESIVE lasts FOREVER!? Granted, neither do screw mounts, but they defo last HECK of a lot longer than adhesive - AND support MUCH more WEIGHT while doing so!? AND you can MUCH more easily INSPECT to see if they’re failing!? AND MUCH more easily REPAIR that failure (by tightening the screws and if necessary, injecting glue and re-drill)!?

This happened to us the other day! My husband was getting something in the kitchen, heard a weird noise and noticed the sink had fallen through. What the hell? Ours didn’t have clips, so we think the epoxy just got old and weak.

Don't despair! I had a black stone sink in my last home. I mainly used "wipes" for regular/daily cleaning, with something like scrubbing bubbles once a week or so. About once a month I gave it a light wipe with MCT (refined coconut) oil. It remained looking great (and we cook a lot). If you have hard water, regular cleaning with vinegar can help. But the real trick to keeping it looking good is some kind of oil. I think something like the "wood butter" for cutting boards I get from Amazon would also work well.

Well , it is not always so simple. You did not mention that most kitchen sinks have a Studor vent or air admittance vent so water will go down the drain and the picture at 2:30 shows a disposer on one end (which implies a double sink install). and some sinks drain hole is on the end and not in the middle. I am going to try it after we plan it out.

    • @rjsophia3712

Only ‘newer’ homes have Studor vents. Our homes were built in 1918, 1948, 1967, 1972 - all still have roof vents for plumbing. I bought a 1957 house on auction in 2008 that I completely gutted and choose to direct vent HVAC, hot water tank out the side of basement ceiling and had no stack pipe installed when the house was reroofed. I put Studor vents under every sink in the house. I had a house built in 1994 (my first new construction) and that still had stack pipes.
Anyone know when Studor vents were first used?

To get the excess silicone that squeezed out... rather than a damp cloth ... use a spray bottle with water and a small bit of dish liquid, spray around the top of the sink and the granite, then with a clean piece of cardboard simply scrape off the silicone in one pass... the soapy water will keep the silicone from sticking to the granite and the sink....

    • @bexaminer1

Just off the top of my head I would say cut a couple of 2x4's to put under the sink. Just make them a bit longer than they need to be and then you can just wedge them in under the sink so that it's very close to the counter. Then you should be able to attach the sink with whatever mounting device you have on the bottom of the counter.

Links to all of the most obvious products, leaving out the most critical part... the epoxy that provides the primary strength to secure the countertop. Providing details on this would be the most useful detail for this type of install. Please consider supporting or insisting your suppliers create or support channels like Project Farm that test products like epoxies that assure the products provide the tensile strength installers and end users are looking for.
What type of epoxy or general epoxy types did you use?
Did you need to rough up surface to ensure proper bonding?
What options are there that you've tested and have found the best results?
There is at least one additional type of mounting approach not mentioned. GoClips are designed to leverage cuts made in the counter.

I think it's a great idea to get rid of a perfectly good sink and replace it with another one that you think looks better. (From someone that takes work crew out to landfills).

Trust me, the liquid nailing or using epoxy to "glue" the blocks from the bottom WILL eventually "let go" and your sink WILL fall; my sink was put up this way many years ago, 10-12, and wanna guess why I'm looking at this video? It did hold for a good number of years, but we all know when everything fails lol. I wedged a 2X4 up under my sink to temp hold it up in place and used the liquid nails fuze-it to put the blocks back up; I left the 2X4 in place through the weekend to allow plenty of time to set completely. I then measured and cut 2X4s and screwed them up under the sink horizontally from end to end, using "L" brackets on the ends of the boards and screwing them boards under the blocks to "secure" the blocks in place; this way, I have the best of two ideas and doubt my sink will ever fall again...when I'm "least ready for it to fall" lol. I then used 100% brown silicone to seal the gap on the topside where the sink and counter meet; my counter is a brownish stone, so it looks really good. I secured the 2x4s at angles to push up flush against the blocks to even out the pressure across the face of the blocks. Im certain i could stand in my sink and it not budge; but wont be testing that confidence. ANY honest contractor will tell you that glued blocks will NOT hold forever, because I'm certain they get many a calls to fix them when they "let go".

Great tutorial!! Question: When holding the sink firmly in place with the clamp and 2x4s, how much clamp force should be used during that 24-hour period?

      All the force

Clamp until the silicone is compressed a bit all the way around, but not to the point that it all squeezes out. You will have clips to help hold the weight of the sink, so don't go too hard.

    • @colinzeta4362
      @colinzeta4362 2 года назад +1

When your clamping with anything (and in this case not clamped completely around it will most likely start bowing at one of the angles).

I called my original installer. We wanted to replace our shallow double undermount with a deeper single sink. The installer strongly discouraged it. He won’t do it. He stated the difficulty in getting the exact same size. If it’s impossible, we would consider a drop in. He also stated that our plumbing setup, on slab, required a shallow sink. I don’t understand that. The installer did a great job on the original granite installation. I really trust his judgement. Think Lowe’s would do the install with a Lowes’s sink. Will they order the correct sink?

The main limitation will be the position of the horizontal drain line as it goes into the wall underneath the sink. You need to take accurate measurements to see if you can fit a deeper sink and allow for proper drainage. I replumbed after installing two deep composite sinks in my homes and one was so close on the measurent, I had to saw off a 1/4" of threads from the new sink strainer assembly I installed to make it work.

Stainless Steel sink looks much much better than black.

    • @lrrryo

Totally agree. Stainless will never be out of style, colors, black, etc. will get out dated.
As for installing an undermount sink, I'd NEVER trust those epoxied in clips, they can and will fail. I always reinforce my sinks with a wooden or stainless steel support so I don't have to have a sink fail in one of my houses. (I buy, rehab and rent houses).

I liked the stainless steel sink better. Water will not clean up silicone, you need to use the alcohol you had.

I am sorry I went with stainless steel when we renovated 14 years ago. I feel like I'm working in a laboratory. It has a very cold feeling. Wish I'd went with white ceramic. Clean and a nice bit of shine.

The undermount is nice and clean. But I think there is disadvantages of this you cannot put large amount of plate it will damage and fall down. This type of installing over the top of granite can hold large amount of plates.
