      They have to be, because everyone already has their favorite MMO, so you have to promise them the moon to get them to try yours. This sets up expectations that you can’t meet, and then your game dies a few months after release or when a WOW expansion or FF story update drops and your players go back to their normal game. It’s like having a favorite pizza place. You could put one next door to me, and I’d try it. But I’d eventually go back to ordering from the old place, because that’s exactly what I like.

      Back in the day, that is late 90s through the 2000s, mmorpgs were amazing. Not so much because of the content to be honest, these could be pretty bland repeat-raid/dungeon-until-you-get-gear-you-want-to-drop kind of games. What made them great were the communities. You have to realize that this was before reddit, facebook, twitter etc. You had your guild and the connections there were really close since these games relied on a lot of team play to succeed in the hardest content.
      Many people want to go back to those kind of times and games but that just won't happen. The environment on the net has changed. Companies have changed. Consumer expectation has changed.

    Honestly -- having played through several Korean games published by publishers 'who supposedly cared' it's much better for Amazon to just concentrate on the servers and not screwing up the billing. There is never enough servers on day of launch and there is always too many a few months in. I can remember hours of queues for Wow for months at the beginning. There will always be some kind of 'pay to win' because the definition changes based on the players perspective. Ultimately, games cannot be free so in some way players need to pay. That said I'm hoping it's not horrid pay to win.

    So as a LA player: The good thing about AGS is that they push for minimum compliance with EU gambling laws. Meaning open odds, forceful addition of pity where needed and non-p2w lootboxes. You'll still have lots of MTX, but the big spenders that would drain 10-100 thousand USD with no upper limit in asian releases are gone. The bad thing is that they have no technical support; Bad anti-cheat configuration (BDO and LA both use EAC yet somehow only in LA it sucks massive donger) and lastly they have no fucking clue how to prepare for MMO releases. They don't know how many servers they'll need, which means with initial new MMO hype you'll be looking at queues/crashes like back during early WoW expansion releases.

    Lost Ark itself is obviously still hard P2W in all regions, but there have been some changes in its monetisation compared to the Korean version, the most notable one being the complete removal of the costume gacha system that's in KR (Yoz's Jar). It came with its own problem, as Global was now unable to obtain certain costumes, but that's a solvable issue. Aside from that, I believe there have been some more minor changes like changing the currency for claiming extra rewards after dungeons/raids to gold and removing mileage, which was a 2nd currency you'd earn from real money purchases and would reward exclusive cosmetics for excessive spending.

      @Assassinss77 Год назад

      @soundbubble you are false. I'm not arguing about the p2w part although I do say that you can keep up as a f2p perfectly fine. However Yoz's Jar wasn't p2w and you can get the skins for in game gold which in KR costs about 40-60k gold in game ( for reference just from raids alone on a weekly basis you get over 130k gold ) . Besides that is not the only option to get legendary skins. You can dismantle other skins and craft a random skin with it and that can be legendary as far as I know.
      End of the raid rewards were changed by Smile Gate and it was way before it released in the west. They changed it and even said it on their Loaon that it is X part of their revenue but to fight gold inflation it will be changed for the better and they will take the revenue loss .
      The only thing AGS changed was the skins being censored, introduced black characters which was previously asian in every other version, renamed bosses and they changed how the pet bonus reroll is not RNG but you can select it for a given amount of crystals. They also made the Crystaline aura buyable with crystals and tied the pet function to it which is nice but most of it is useless and essencially you are paying more if you only want the pet bonus and not the aura itself.

Third-party publisher in a gaming context is any publisher that doesn't also have a console of their own they're selling and creating more or less exclusively for. So Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are the first-party publishers (with Microsoft now also getting all their games to PC and Sony also starting to port some to PC with a time-delay), third-party is any other publisher who creates games for these consoles they don't control.

      I mean GW2 did it not too long ago. Along with tons of decently middle success games. The idea of a new game being an insta WoW killer isn't viable. But you don't measure a game's success based on if it instantly becomes the #1 game in it's genre. Imagine if every shooter released had to beat COD or be called a failure.

    • @smithgdwg
      @smithgdwg Год назад

      @@matthewsaari6577 I think the best think you can do with an MMORPG is to not try to please everyone. Focus on what makes your game unique and fun, and keep it within that scope. Star Wars Galaxies should of tried to expand the original Sandbox approach of their MMORPG instead of trying to chase the WOW formula.

    • @Omicron716
      @Omicron716 Год назад +1

      The MMO genre itself isn't unviable, but new ones are often being developed and managed by people who don't understand what makes MMOS work. Every new MMO is now competing for that much-lauded "Wow killer" spot, hoping to be the next big hit like FFXIV that will carry the company and its other projects on MMO revenue alone, and in doing so they've defacto eliminated the 'middle-class" of MMOS. Whether from unrealistic expectations from the shareholders or the developers, an MMO is now either competing with the WoW/FFXIV-tier heavyweights, or a complete flop.
      Doesn't help that they don't seem to understand why WoW and FFXIV are so popular in the first place either. They're games with low barriers to entry that appeal heavily to a wider player base because of how approachable they are, whereas a lot of AAA MMO projects these days will have incredibly obtuse gearing, questing, leveling, monetization, or other miscellaneous systems that drive off the larger casual playerbase. This would be fine if being just modestly successful was okay, because those kinds of games can be supported by a smaller playerbase, but because every MMO has to be a top-tier revenue powerhouse, it will fail.

    • @Lenariet
      @Lenariet Год назад

      The MMO genre has outlived itself a bit in the sense that a lot of games being labelled MMOs are hardly such and that game design is easier without pursuing the genuine, proper MMO idea too much.
      Take Destiny 2, Warframe or Path of Exile for example. I'm 100% sure they have the "MMO" tag on Steam. Yet they depend >heavily< on instancing. Especially PoE is effectively "just" a Diablo 1 or 2 of sorts. Beyond the social hubs aka lobbies aka chat rooms with graphics nothing in PoE is even remotely persistent or shared with even a handful of people. But back in the day no one ever called Diablo 1 or 2 "MMO". So one could ask: Do we have many more MMOs nowadays or have we simply shifted away from them and their core principles, willingly or unwillingly?
      Gameplay-wise there is only so much that you can do in MMOs. If you have 100, 1000, 10.000 players in one zone, then what could they realistically do? MMOs are parading numbers, scam-y titles like Dreamworld use huge and countless as their USPs. But unless your goal is all-out PvP warfare it makes little sense to have too many people in one area. There is almost no good gameplay that would support such numbers. This is why even more genuine MMOs are intentionally throttling down the players per zone despite the technology allowing more. But if numbers don't matter, and persistency neither, if by the logic of some even a CoD or Battlefield could pass as MMOs - then what's the point of even using that label in the first place?

    Just some thoughts (rather questions) aloud:
    What is actually needed for an MMORPG to be sustainable in the long run? Of course people like their MMORPGs free, but maybe subscription-based model is the answer to all of it after all? It seems to provide a stable income over time and if the developers aren't greedy the pricing of the subscription can be calculated to be just enough to cover the expenses of running the game's servers for N concurrent players on average and M employees with salary. This means there's also possibility of avoiding strong P2W content, which company would otherwise put in to compensate expenses and milk it after.
    In regards to engineering team, could it even consist of non-senior developers? In other words, is it even possible for a greenhorn team to make a startup making an MMORPG, or is it just too advanced of a genre, that has too much technical and engineering complexity, to finish it without a pretty sizeable and experienced team? And if it's not a greenhorn team, is only the management the problem?
    Am I wrong in assuming companies don't do this intentionally? Is it simply a case of corporate greediness, where investors and management prefer a short-lived MMORPG game making tons of money in the first few months (years?) through cash grabs and then drop dead to a long-running project? "Get rich quick vs. steady job"? Min-maxing on a higher level?

      Subscriptions used to be the normal way to play MMOs. Only comparatively few MMOs still have them, and more often than not they are basically optional. They were dropped for reasons. I doubt those reasons vanished. So I'm not seeing them return too much.

    • @TheSpeep

      The problem with subscription models is that they form a pretty high barrier of entry, especially for younger players who may still be financially dependant on their parents.
      People wont want to pay for a subscription to something they dont know theyll stick around with long term, even back in the day when it was basically the standard for mmo's there were probably a fair few games that just failed to properly get off the ground because of that model.

    • @mjork240
      @mjork240 Год назад

      @@TheSpeep Makes sense, it isn't hard for me to agree, because I myself, being a young student, can't really justify FFXIV subscription in my current situation. I started the 30-day trial, but played only 5-6 days of it, so it wouldn't be worth paying up for monthly sub. I know Trackmania (racing game) has a bit different subscription model in the sense that for 10 doubloons ($) you get a whole year of subscription, but without some extra features like creating clubs (clans). Essentially different tiers. Granted the game is much simpler than MMOs, but perhaps it's also worth looking into subscription tiers. One can probably finish an MMORPG main questline, side-quests and play a fair amount of end-game content while paying 20-30 doubloons ($) for 6-12 months play time, which amounts to about the same commitment level as just buying the game I think.

    • @mjork240

      @@TheSpeep That being said, here's another crazy idea, leaning even more into the idea of subscriptions - MMORPG-as-a-service (MaaS lol): billing players only for the time they played, essentially making the players pay for as much resources of the infrastructure as they used, also accounting for the price of storage their characters take up + some profit
      EDIT: The pricing model doesn't matter in the end of the day. I am just confused about how the developers of MMORPGs can profit from the game without putting a price tag on it and WITHOUT micro-transact'ing the shit out of it. (Every free MMO ever, I swear.)

      It's simple - many disadvantages while lesser earner than P2W.
      People with time don't have money. People with job don't have time. Huge fomo, because it's your money, you feel obligated to play game.
      When it's "F2P", then you have whales (i.e. Diablo immortal case), so one person can earn you way more than thousands of subscriptions. Bigger numbers, because multiple accounts are a thing and people in general might try it when it's F2P.
      So you are getting a lot easier marketing and, sadly, Koreans seems to love P2W

    I'll check it out. The previews have me thinking it shares some similarities with GW2 given NCSoft owns the developer of GW2. I liked GW1 and GW2 and they do some things really well, some things poorly. Hopefully Throne and Liberty takes more from the things Guild Wars has done really well.
    There's always the danger with a Korean game there will be heavy pay to win convenience but you never know, it might not be too bad. Hopefully they handle servers like Guild Wars 1 and 2 and that can teach Amazon how to handle things for New World. I think one of the big blunders in New World is the rigid nature of servers. It was difficult to join my friends and I didn't have a transfer token so I stopped playing. There were other problems to be sure but one big and consistent problem for New World has been your ability to find people to play with... in an MMO...

    NCSoft, so it'll have the copy+paste systems from all their other games for enhancements. Packages you can buy to skip the grind but only in small chunks at a time. Nice SSS+ weapon! but you'll need to roll it 25 more times to increase it's star ranking, then you can evolve it and then merge it with others... When it all goes to sh!t and the money stops, NC will just kill it like they've done to last few 'games' they've released.

The Korean Version also has Currencies that are only obtainable by spending while you could earn them in the west by gameplay and they are less impactful.

      TBH, in the case of Lost Ark, I am not sure if SG or AGS are responsible for the numerous fuck ups. We do not know to what extent AGS has control over the game. Also, it is rare nowadays for a dev/publisher to have a quick response to issues affecting the game. People are going to say owh, but the dc issue lasted for months. True, but it got resolved for the most part. Most MMO dev/publishers do not even bother fixing that, let alone the smaller bugs/issues.

    • @SoundBubble

      Probably gonna be dead after a year, but not because it's AGS, but because it's a PvP-heavy KR MMO made by NCSoft and a spiritual successor to Lineage. Honestly, AGS currently is the single ray of hope that it doesn't turn into a P2W nightmare as NW still has none and they at least reduced certain P2W aspects in Lost Ark, although it still obviously is.

    man the average quality of these mmo games is so low, wonder what the 'next big thing' will be, and I don't mean popular for 2 weeks. Aside from GW2 the only games I put a lot of time into in the past 10 years was Tera and to a lesser extent BDO and Blade and soul, those 2 feeling like singleplayer games where you'd occasionally see another player, which did enhance the experience but wasn't really integral to my experience. In Tera there was genuine social interaction with people that could speak the same language, but that game was B tier at best. Guild Wars 1 and probably WoW were A tier games.

People use bots because it's a p2w game and as such they can make real world money from selling in game gold they're harvesting with their bots. Throne and Liberty is most likely going to be the same if it's typical Korean mmo p2w and AGS are publishing it.
