Hello Film Courage, thank You for everything You put on Your channel. I'm a digital artist, yet I've started actively writing lately, and the material You share is what I'm constantly watching these days!
In case anybody is looking for a metaphor invalid or otherwise, Walter's comparison to Edison is interesting, because Edison wasn't working from scientific first principals to make a light bulb -- unlike, say, making a particle accelerator -- so it was a process of trial and error until he finally hit on the right idea. It wasn't scientific; it was brute force problem solving. I've been binge-watching Film Courage videos, and there seem to be so many genuinely-qualified professionals trying to quantify screenwriting into a scientific process, and so many that disagree if not contradict each other, that...well...somebody smarter than me could offer a pithy insight. I'm not pretending that all my comments are good.
Hey friends, english is not my natural language... Can you tell me what does Erik Oleson say at 10:45 "I'm more of a planner than a ___________". Does he say "panzer"?
We can see why you are having difficulty pinpointing that word, we can't either. In regards to his meaning, believe he is trying to say that he doesn't wander or tip-toe in his storytelling.
He says "pantser" -- that is, someone who does not plan out the plot, does not outline, but rather writes spontaneously, "by the seat of your pants" ... a writer who just applies pants to the chair and starts writing once s/he has the basic idea and at least some of the characters in mind, and a good opening situation. Most screenwriters are not pantsers; they are planners/outliners -- but some do very thorough ones, while some just plan out the highlights, creating sketchy, incomplete (and of course flexible) outlines. Anyway, "pantser" is a well-known word among writers, although a bit more so among novelists.
Lol. I heard pantser upon taking the mission to decipher. I'm glad he clarified, because "to pants" someone is US slang for sneaking up behind someone then pulling down their pants. The 14yr old in me hoped it's what he meant. "I don't always plan to pants. But when I do, I leave no slack." I didn't know pantser is a writer term derived from "by the seat of your pants".
Pedro Alarcon: Pantser is the cousin of Prancer (one of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer friends) who wasn’t chosen by Santa because Santa made a planned list way in advance, so he lost that gig, but did find work when he disguised himself as a zebra named Kumba in Madagascar. His bottom half pants were painted white, so that’s how he got his nickname of Pantser from Eddie Murphy.
I consider the following list, posted on Quora, to be a good list of the best screenplays ever: www.quora.com/Which-screenplays-should-aspiring-screenwriters-read/answer/Andrew-White-Cleary
