Most snowglobes are just made of water, but some can contain ethylene glycol. Most of those usually don't contain enough ethylene glycol to cause damage, but keep the word "usually" in mind. A homemade snowglobe can contain concentrations of anything, which is what happened in this case.
Ethylene glycol will cause a profound high anion gap metabolic acidosis. Generation of additional anions will cause a decrease in bicarbonate, causing the acidosis. But once this course runs out, it becomes harder to diagnose ethylene glycol ingestion, and histories for these patients are notoriously inaccurate.
These cases are patients who I, or my colleagues have seen. They are de-identified and many instances have been presented in more depth in an academic setting. These videos are not individual medical advice and are for general educational purposes only. I do not give medical advice over the internet, see your own physician in person for that.

It's very common in dysfunctional families for children to not realize what is and isn't normal. I wouldn't put it on the child.

It took me a moment to realise that his son was young and didn’t just leave his dad sleeping for 2 days on the ground because it was funny. He really didn’t know something was wrong as a little kid.

Yeah! Chubbyemu says 10 years ago he was an alcoholic but got sober by the time his son was born, so that puts the kid at 10 years old minimum. And then he says he relapsed so it’s a young boy who’s seeing his alcoholic father passed out. Can’t blame him.
@@wolveprincess *maximum. Minimum means the kid is 10 years or older, but from all information we're given, he's younger than 10.

I think it's important for people to realise that the poor son is probably a 9-10 year old child who was very used to seeing his alcoholic father sprawled on the floor and that's why he didn't call the emergency number. It's a poor kid in a dysfunctional family who managed to save his father's life.
He could’ve also been scared to say anything. Might have been worried that if he said anything dad would get in trouble.
Exactly. It was a daily life for me to see my mother passed out in places all over the house when I woke up, or was done playing or whatnot in another room. Bus driver would have to bring me back to school when my mother wouldn't answer when I buzzed her to open the door to the apartment, police excorts were a part of my life and it was normal for me. When I was greeted by a social worker the worker told me my mother was passed out drunk and I shrugged amd didn't understand why I had to be taken away. I never had a day where my mother wasn't drunk, where my dad wasn't beating her up, where police were not involved etc. I watched my dad get arrested three times. I remember sitting in the back on one cruiser watching them hancuffing him and placing him in another car. It was only when at 6 years old, I was placed in a foster family and found out what it felt to be loved.
@@ameliawilder28 I'm sorry you had to go through so much, but glad to hear you found a loving home in the end. Wishing the best for you now. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, it's really weird to see that other comment thread with more likes and comments where people are shitting on the child of an addict for being normalized to this kind of thing. Clearly these people were not raised by addicts. Good for them but they need to stop talking about things they don't know about.
My mother cycled through all different sorts of drug abuse, but what I remember most clearly was when she had been addicted to pills that would make her fall asleep for long periods of time. Somas, Xanax, and other muscle relaxers. It becomes normal to the child and they don't realize that when mommy or daddy is sleeping for too long, it could be something serious. They just know their parent sleeps a lot.
@@isthiscereallife or those trolls were raised by addicts and think its normal and that is why they are so narcissistic towards the child for not "saving" the drunk a** parents. Bet you most of them have become their parents now and are projecting their own rejection of their own innocence on the child in this situation. Lots of them think the moral line of addiction is based on legality since "laws uphold society" or so we are told. The only thing I notice holding up society, is love cause everything else fails.

This is the man who I was afraid I’d become. 15 years sober from alcohol. I was the worst alcoholic you could imagine. All liquor all day all the time and it was killing me with pancreatitis. I just couldn’t live with the thought that I was repeating what my dad did. I was a pathetic drunk and I knew it. And I knew I needed to change before my son realized I was drinking. Because the realization that your dad is pathetic is a real hard life changing experience. I didn’t want my son to have those same thoughts about myself. So 15 years later I’m clean but I also have a broken pancreas. I have a great relationship with my son though. There’s nothing in the world that would make me pick up alcohol again. The shame that I would feel would kill me.
I'm so glad you're doing better for yourself and have improved your relationships, alcohol can be really dangerous.
I drank til the point where I was blackout drunk and I smoked til the point I greened out on a regular basis two years of college because I was depressed as shit and have lots of trauma.
My grades tanked and I stopped interacting with anyone. I withdrew and quit my job and after that for a while it was routine for me to wake up, get alcohol and bring it to my room, and drink and smoke with the lights off til I passed back out. It was miserable.
I literally can't go back to drinking even if I wanted to because I've had 2 grand mal seizures this year and my epilepsy meds got their dosage upped to the point where I can't drink on them. I'm not mad about it, really.
@@TheDeadOfNight37 honestly sometimes when we get extra sick from alcohol it’s for the best. I used to get violently ill when I would slip up the first year of quitting. So one day I would drink heavily, and the next three days I would just be so hung over and in crazy pain. It probably save my life going through that extra pain. I needed my brain rewired in the worst way. I had the motivation and my body denied me any option of failure. It was either death or quitting. I chose to stay alive and I see it being that simple. Now my abusive drunken Dad has passed a slow painful death starving for oxygen from and COPD (hard to see a human to through that, mixed feelings or not), and i’ve had conversations with my son and my new wife about how bad I was, and they find it hard to imagine that person was in me. That’s very good. If I die today then I am not ashamed of who I have become. Before I wanted to die. Anyone who drinks like we did wants death in some way or another. Much easier to be happier and have a healthy mind without all the poison going through my mind and body. Good luck to you friend.
@@liggerstuxin1 I relate a lot to that weird feeling like, not feeling like you've changed a lot or maybe enough, until you realise people who didn't see you at your worst could never picture what you were like, and that you've changed so much in so many ways you can't appreciate them all. Sorry for the ramble, I'm also an ex-addict and it's late at night. It warms my heart to hear good outcomes and keeps me on track, so thank you for sharing. I still feel the devil on my back sometimes and it helps to remember that things could be okay 10 years from now.
Dad: *passed out for days in same spot.*
Son: "Ah, classic Dad."
I mean... probably, if he was into alcohol I bet he had times he'd pass out for a long time. Plus the kids was probably trying to rationalize, not wanting to admit to himself something might be wrong his dad, so he just kept telling himself "he always passes out for long amounts of time, he will wake up anytime now"
I genuinely feel like there’s something VERY wrong with that.
Penny Nickles I was a fifth a day alcoholic, and if I didn’t get a drink in it would cause a seizure. Usually I’d be taken to the hospital to be monitored, or I’d drink again to make the shakes go away. But no matter how much I drank near my family they wouldn’t have just thought it was normal that I was out cold in one spot for that long.
@@ambrosiamckittrick4623 yeah that's why kids are assumed to be stupid, you can't expect them to think that rationally.

As someone with an alcoholic parent I can’t blame the kid for not immediately knowing something was up. After a while you get a little jaded about that sort of thing (ie them sleeping on the floor). Though, he probably should’ve at least checked on him even if he wasn’t going to try to move dad to a couch/bed. He probably could’ve noticed sooner, but when you’re an alcoholic’s kid you generally try to keep your distance for the sake of your sanity (as opposed to constantly being forced to interact with/take care of your own parent) Being a kid and having to “parent” your own parent can be exhausting/draining.
Exhausting/draining doesn't even begin to cover it. It can be straight up traumatizing and impact your ability to form normal relationships in the future. Seriously, FUCK parents who have to be parented by their own goddamn children.

If he was my son I would have slapped the shit out of him
The father was an alcoholic. Him being passed out on the floor doing stupid stuff probably happened very frequently. The kid was also scared to intervene with his dads behavior because he probably was abusive. Just a consequence of his dad's behavior that the kid felt and acted that way. The first time he passed out the kid would of been shocked, the 50th time he would probably just let him sleep it out.

If you were living with an alkoholic you would know that's normal. Interupting them in that state often directs their anger to you, and family members know that too well. Those moments when they hangover for days weeks even are sweet relief, not abnormality

@@DrunkenAussie76 True, that and the snowglobe would likely have concerned me right away. Well that is assuming I was sober myself I'll admit if I was drunk myself I'd probably check for cyanosis and crash out myself if I didn't find any but even then I'd wake up hungover the next morning and think WTF try to wake them and when that failed call for help. Passing out is one thing, not being rousable for a few hours while still breathing is another but if someone can't be roused after 8 hours something is well and truly wrong.

After reading a few more comments last night someone pointed out that through the timeline suggested in the video that the kid may well have been around 10 years old which does change things a bit I suppose.
When I first watched I had assumed that he was a teenage kid which would certainly be quite negligent but a ten year old is a bit different.
While I was teaching my kids to be observant for things like this, a kid who is around an alcoholic parent may not be made aware of things like this.
Either way it is a sad story.
A woman I used to work with was desperate for alcohol and it was past time at store you could get any,so she drank a bottle of rubbing alcohol. She is very lucky to have survived, that bc her daughter who didn't live there, found her.
