A long tale regarding a short event , via multiple weather reports and many scenes of the 60’s
IN January 1963, an unknown young Bob Dylan got some work in a (now lost) BBC play The Madhouse on Castle Street. He sings The Ballad of the Gliding Swan. The Sunday night play also features Dylan’s first televised performance of Blowin’ in the Wind.
He was paid a fee of 500 guineas to play the role of Bobby.
* While in London, Dylan stayed with Martin Carthy, who helped introduce him to the burgeoning folk club circuit and who remembers chopping up a piano for firewood to counter the effects of that long cold winter. Dylan became a regular figure on the folk scene and even found the time to cut an LP in a record shop on Charing Cross Road, under the pseudonym of Blind Boy Grunt.
Dylan’s stay also resulted in a burst of original songs (Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright, Bob Dylan’s Dream) which were heavily influenced by his exposure to traditional English folk music.
In 1968, the BBC threw the tape away. If you have a copy, let us know. Видеоклипы
I was delivered in Dec ‘62…don’t remember the chilleness but this chap must have influenced my way somehow, a lifelong love affair with all things Dylan an folk, thanks
The next time Dylan sang "Hang Me O Hang Me" in London, it was at Hammersmith Odeon 28 years later, in 1990.
Nice to see Martin Carthy here. He was Bob Dylan’s first transatlantic advocate. They became firm friends, with the respect remaining in place over a lifetime.
Thanks so much Woollhal for this unique BBC TV Play in 1963 with Dylan🌺❣️🌺🌷🎶💫👌🌞🌹
What a treasure. Doesn't matter if they never find a copy of the play, just watching and listening to these recollections has been lovely. But if they did ..... oh wow !!!
Hopefully, it’s out there somewhere. Probably, it could be one of those situations where an elderly relative dies and it turns up when his or her family members start looking through such a person’s personal possessions.
Potentially, history waiting to be uncovered ... sort of finding a musical Ark of the Covenant!
Bob is the Man!❤️❤️
This Dylan tape made for quite a tale.
Must say I loved this! Took me 60 years back in time when I used to hunt down and swallow any news bit that had the words ‘Bob Dylan’ printed on while not knowing that two Spanish au-pair girls in London were being premiered Blowing’ In The Wind… Did he ever mention this in his “Chronicles I”?
Wow!!
Strange, but good.
Clarinet tune is fab. Mebbe Bob will turn out a clarinet album, yet. I'd listen. Harmonica/clarinet rave-up.
The most remarkable event, to arise from this across Atlantic gig, was Bob's writing of "Girl From The North Country." Sixty years on Bob still performs and includes it in his Live set list.
Interesting sound old
Took staying power to go to end but I did sounds a boring play poor bob must have been strange for him
For that money I'd say he bore it with fortitude.
It takes some staying power to sit through all the endless commercials on this!
Unfortunately these are RUclips additions This channel is not monetised so nothing I can do .
@@woolhall Okay, fair enough. A while ago, I do now remember seeing a RUclips TOS email, stating that they had a right to insert commercials into a video if they wanted to.
And seeing as you’re not the first person to say this to me about the commercials, it seems that they must be exercising that right. I guess that nearly $200 billion a year in revenue is not enough for them.
@@woolhall anyway, I did give the vid a like. I’m interested in most things Bob Dylan, the early years especially.
