Fun fact: Golurk, for some reason, can also learn Fly. It’s understandable that Michael didn’t consider it, as not very many people know that.
It can learn fly and how it can is proven in the anime. IT HAS ROCKET BOOSTERS ON THE BOTTOM OF ITS FEAT. How cool is that.

Fun fact: despite of Bug/Flying being a really common type combo, none of these Pokémon can learn Fly. The only Fly using Bugs are not a Flying type as well. These are Volcarona, Genesect (for some reason) and Vikavolt.

It's not that bad. You can usually get Zubat super early, so oftentimes I find it only needing a level or two after evolving into Golbat before it evolves again. Especially in games where you can get an early soothe bell.

Honestly use dodrio instead of fearow, it gets drill peck but is also really fast so crits happen all the time. You also can get it right where fly is.

I'm aware of how useful fly is, but I tried playing a Pokémon game without fly once, and it was honestly really fun. I really felt like I was exploring a region, because I would always have to go through routes multiple times, and was forced to really learn where I was going. It didn't feel all that tedious either, though that may have just been me, and I'm sure that other people would find it absolutely infuriating.

My only issue is that fly would be a good move even if it wasnt an hm. Therefore i alway teach it to my flyer. And not being able to use it would just be an odd handicap that id place upon myself for no apparent reason. Thats just my 2 cents tho

Dodrio is a better option than Fearow, I’m afraid. Dodrio’s attack stat is at 110, with him also being as fast as Fearow. Tri-Attack is OP on Dodrio.
Not to mention, Doduo's right around where you would pick up the Fly HM
While I agree with you fearow has the advantage of being catchable at any time. Or in gen 2 the trade boost for Kenya. Outclassed in the late game, incredibly strong early game and for story

I’m just gonna say, for the crobats, in soul silver/heart gold, you can get a faster crobat because you can get a early Sooth Bell, which gives your Pokémon holding it more happiness, which is how golbat evolved
I will admit Dodrio always catches me off guard everytime I've used it. However less so gen 4 and after. That Tri Attack ohko'd so many things for me before it became special.

Do best gift Pokémon next. For Pokémon crystal, it might be the odd egg if it hatches to Tyrogue, because if it evolves to Hitmonlee, then it can access high jump kick before the player battles Whitney. Just giving you a head start.

I feel like the Crobat friendship evolution isn't even an issue. In most cases of me using Zubat by the time they evolved into Golbat upon the next level up they were trying to evolve again. I try to wait till the 30s to let it evolve so that it learned moves faster. I think lvl 36 is a good level.
Why pick Fearow over Dodrio in Red and Blue? Dodrio has higher base attack and equal speed, learns Drill Peck earlier, gets access to STAB Tri Attack, and Doduo is available right outside where you get the Fly HM.
Because Dodrio is louder and angrier and more likely to wake you up in the middle of the night with it's bickering? Just a though.

One other benefit of the Eon Flute is that unlike fly, you can travel to specific routes instead of having to go to towns/cities

@Jackson Green I’m pretty sure you can only sometimes and that’s only if the rouse has something notable on it. The Fly HM as far as I’ve tried it has not been usable to fly to any route as easily as the Eon Flute which can without any specific notable locations to be on said route.

Today I learned, again, that Crobat evolves through friendship. Ive had my shinny Zubat at PC rotting for the longest time and havent used it anywhere. Oh and its on the Pokemon Ruby version

Originally I thought you evolved a Golbat by maxing out it's coolness stat like Feebas. I was very discouraged when it didn't work. On Golbat or Feebas.
6:36 I would argue Dodrio is better. You get it around fly, it can learn Tri Attack which is very good for normal coverage, it can get drill peak as well and it has 20 more points in attack with barely any state of Ferrows being better and if they are it's by 5 points. Also while level 31 might be rough let me remind you that Dodo can learn fly to so yeah I would say Dodrio is a way better option especially if you have an electric type already like you would in yellow.
I didn't get the logic of why dodrio can learn fly? It doesn't even has wings and plus, dodrio is a little late game.

@@melanitesong You only actually need to beat Misty and do the S.S. Anne to get access to Rock Tunnel (and by proxy, access to the rest of Kanto), meaning that if you really wanted to challenge yourself, you could fight Blaine before fighting Lt. Surge, Erika and Sabrina.

I think it’s because it clashes with Charizard/Delphox due to typing.
it is because it only has 81 base attack, while Charizard has 84, Hawlucha has 92, Char Y has 104, Staraptor has 120 and Char X has 130, so it kinda sucks compared to the other options

I always use Crobat in my Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald playthroughs. You get it so early that I get Golbat at 22 and Crobat at 23 every time. Friendship evolution can be a pain for pokemon that are later in the game or that you don't necessarily want to use, but if it's an early game pokemon that you want in your party it shouldn't be a problem unless you let it die a lot.
You can also grind friendship by biking/running around for a bit... Annoying but getting it right away is pretty good
Give them a Soothe Bell so they'll boost their friendship fast.

Yeah that one made no sense to me, Talonflame is obvious choice as it's a solid flyer and fire type that hits super hard especially when it has Gale Wings in gen 6.
Gale Wings is it’s hidden ability so you have to spend a bunch of time trying to get it which is even less convenient that friendship for Crobat. Plus it’s fire typing interferes with Delphox users and Charizard has the same type and is better anyway. This is for a playthrough and not a competitive match.
Flame body and fly is an amazing egg hatching combo
Staraptor still hits SIGNIFICANTLY harder. Burns are nice but outspeeding and OHKOing your opponent is even better. And again; breeding takes time and is inconvenient. Even if you go that route we’ve got Reckless for Staraptor and Solar Power for Charizard (or just mega evolve him).

In gen 1, I’d say dodrio. You can get it before erika, though you can fearow earlier. Dodrio also has a superior attack stat which compliments drill peck, which makes for a great flier (yes, dodrio can learn fly. It doesn’t make sense but it can)

I always use ducklett/swanna as my surflyer,and if I find it with good physical atk, that's just bonus.Oftentimes I use two of them or even three(not in same team,of course)-1. for surfly,2.for brave bird or aerial slash moveset and 3. Just for funny rain dance moveset(2.is my dragonslayer later)

To me the best flyer in gen 1 is doduo and later evolve into dodrio, it basically stronger version of fearow and you get doduo at same place as you acquaire fly and it get tri attack which is really strong 100% move with fun secondary effect
They gave dodrio fly while it has no wings but not Charizard who has giant wings and is known to fly kiawe and ash around

I want to make a case for Skarmory in the Hoenn games. You get access to it after Wattsons Gym and Steel Wing as well as Air Cutter are good enough STAB moves for it to work until Wynonas Gym.

I'd also add that while all of Crobat's stats are strictly better than Skarmory's (bedies Defense), Skarmory has an insanely good defensive typing. It's especially useful in Nuzlockes.

The reason volcarona is used as a fly mule is because he's the only fly user in existence with flame body which is for hatching eggs faster. This was an exclusive case to just him till Talonflame came out.

a quick suggestion from me: if you don't pick charmander or fennekin, use talonflame instead of staraptor

Just a correction: Golbat DOESN'T learn Fly in Gen III. However, the fact that you get it so early (PLUS the Soothe Bell is available in Slateport to help with the friendship) there is no away you won't have a Crobat when you reach Fortree City (also Crobat learns the amazing Sludge Bomb TM after the 5th Gym, which is physical in Gen III, so clear winner IMO)
PS: Why wasn't Dodrio even mentioned in Gen I... it has 20 more Attack BST and is catchable in the EXACT SAME ROUTE you get Fly. The only downside is you only get it then while Spearow is very early game, but Spearow isn't particularly useful against the gyms prior

@@azelfdaboi5265 Dodrio is actually the "strongest" flying type in Kanto. Since flying is a physical type in Gen I all the Legendary Birds miss out on claiming that spot, and I know I am ignoring Dragonite but the hassle of getting before the League is just terrible
@@justaveraeg generally? I can't argue against the early argument but Dodrio not only gets access to Drill Peck like Fearow but it also has Tri Attack which is physical in Gen I. Hyper Beam TM is a difficult to get prize in the Game Corner (and even so Dodrio has 20 more Attack) so Dodrio outclasses Fearow as a flying and as normal type
0:57 as of gen 7, them being able to learn fly now makes sense since you can no longer use the move out of battle. it makes sense for pidgey to be able to use fly in battle. but weirdly, vullaby has been able to learn fly in every core series game in which vullaby appears, despite its dex entries suggesting otherwise. hm02 in gens 5 and 6. tm76 in gen 7 (not available in lgpe) and tm02 in gen 8 (not available in bdsp)

Honestly, charizard not being able to learn fly is the least if gen 1's worries. It can't even learn any flying moves in gen 1 and 2.

I use my Latias for fly in my first game - Alpha Sapphire. I don't actually remember if I got it early enough or what I used before if not, but yeah. I know I don't need fly to fly on her, and while that is fun and gets me other places fly can't, fly is quicker and easier.
I remember when some of my neighbours and friends, with gameboy devices, taught powerful pokémon HM moves. I wasn't in favour of this at all knowing they couldn't be forgotten by normal means. Aerodactyl and Pidgeot are my main flyers. They also use Fly in battles is their one of their main moves (only other STAB besides Double-Edge).
Honestly Aerodactyl needs more flying type moves. I had to teach mine fly because it couldn't learn acrobatics or brave bird, or even air slash

@@scraggylegends2185 sure it does, Doduo learns it the level before it evolves in fact. And it is by no means a joke, it has better 20 points more in attack, and the same speed stat as Fearow. Sure, it's a bit frailer, but who cares when you OHKO everything
