I will NEVER move to Washington. I am buying a property there. I'm not leaving Vegas. I'm buying multiple houses, and keeping them all. I am using it to make money, and that's it.
I also tuned the gpus which took twenty minutes and they are running much cooler and using less power.
And of course, I'm mining other coins with the gpus and converting to btc. I figured that was implied.
I am also paying $400K+ in taxes this year, so this mining income is a joke. I will declare every crypto that I mine and invest in so I do not get jailed. I have a bookeeper and cpa that see all of my accounts.
This video is NOT here to convince you whether or not you should hold or mine any cryptocurrency. I will only talk about how you can do it with solar. There are obvious risks, and you can lose everything. Or you can make huge gains. Do your research. Everyone has their own opinion on this stuff.

I am an electronics hobbyist and watch every one of your videos, they are very informative and contain massive amount of knowledge and attention to detail. But to top it all off, it is a breath of fresh air to hear someone promote individualism, personal responsibility and self sufficiency. !!!

We have our miner in the basement, mounted about 6 inches horizontally from and about a foot below our AO Smith air-sourced heat pump water heater. When the water heater kicks on, it blows cold air directly onto the cards. When the water heater is off, the heat from the cards rises toward the air intake for the water heater, thereby pre-heating the air for the air-sourced heat pump water heater. It's a win-win on so many levels. The heat pump water heater pulled the basement temperature down to 48 degrees last winter. The miner will warm the basement up a few degrees this year, now that it is in the basement.
I have a mini dry ice maker and a fan. Works like a charm!

you could "mod" the ASIC and water cool it. And use a Water Buffer to pre-heat your home water. I bet them ASCI's get in the 60*c+ range so a lot of that energy could be "recycled" into home water heating.

I'm not a firm crypto believer (yet) as a store of value since it lacks anything tangible, but didn't I read somewhere recently that all of this enormous power usage associated around the blockchain verification and mining is easily avoided using another technology that's proven to work and uses a small fraction of the power requirements? I believe one or more alt coins are already using it. If so, shouldn't one be careful when investing in all the rigs if they could be proven basically useless for this purpose almost overnight if the other tech was adopted (and it sounded fairly easy to do)? With everything being pushed towards "green", I would be very fearful about investing in $10k+ rigs that are deemed the enemy right now, even if a few are producing their own power.
Another potentially huge point: if you mine through an LLC, you can get both the tax write-off *PLUS* the tax credit (25% of solar system cost taken out of your taxes dollar-for-dollar I believe). This means you're effectively saving something like 40-50% on the cost of the solar system

Finally, your perspective for mining + own solar ecosystem + opinions about crpytocurrency. Most of us have the concept and execution for mining and i agree most of us not having the guts to integrate it with solar system. I admired your passion and hopefully can start from something small.
Commercial greenhouses need low cost heat to keep the plants alive during winter time sounds like a co-op.
Omg I've been thinking how I can cheaply power a greenhouse to grow food in the winter. That is genius! Except at $12,000 each, that will be a $60,000 greenhouse. Hmm maybe I'll stick to manure heating.

@@igneousc You put the miners in a room/shed with a fan and duct going to the greenhouses. Then you produce organic salad greens in a cold climate and sell them to hotels and high end restaurants.
Ideally on a property in BC, Quebec or Washington state, or somewhere cold where you can do micro hydro.

go grid tie first so it doesn't matter if your solar is small when you start. You can just add more panel and inverters later.
Did you ever heard about Immersion Cooling ? It use dielectric coolant fluid (made by Engineered Fluids) or mineral oil. You literally sink the entire asic into that stuff and save electricity by removing fans and also you shut the noise by 90%!! It would be cool to see you test this !
I installed one of those 115V/20A Minisplit systems, but it was branded Cooper&Hunter and exactly the same units, I did have to vacuum the line set but now I own the pump and gages. The most difficult part was crawling under my house to run power. Now my office is nice and cool and even warmed it up this morning. I would like to add a solar system to run my network, Starlink, and computers with some mining in the future, but I will probably wait till I get my shop power finished.

You're probably mining ethereum on your GPUs (nice hash to bitcoin, I imagine)
Ethereum needs low/medium core speed and high memory speed. You can easily increase hashrate and lower heat and lower usage and also potentially extend the life of your GPUs.
It is fairly simple but people get into the details like temperatures and tuning and also how much power and heat you use depends on the algorithm. Eg: If you use SATA power connector for your riser, it might seem okay on etherum, but would likely melt on something else thst is core hard, like ravencoin.
You're a smart guy but remember to stay humble. You still have much to learn.
Agreed. The hardware setup is simple but tweaking the cards to get the best hash rate per watt may take some time. I hope he isn't mining Bitcoin directly with the GPUs since I assume that doesn't make sense at all at this point with the difficulty. You mine an alt coin then convert it to Bitcoin. I would consider doing this with solar as well but aquiring all the gear to do so and offsetting the heat has a high cost.

About those noisy fans:
I made a copperwire spiral water pumped cooling system for my computers about 15 years ago just for fun. Worked great, but be careful with electronics and water. Oil can be used instead, if you can contain it well.
It looked ugly but worked great.

i think you are forgetting to consider the increasing mining complexity - this has to slow down your break-even period and you should do a projection calculation with these figures and still be sure you can make profit.
I mined ETH for 2 years and you are right on. AND, those ASICS are not without wear and tear - reducing your profits as they breakdown. You're better off just buying crypto.

@@W0KNI crypto mining is really just a geek thing now as you can't compete with the big boys. I used to do it about 6 years ago and made "ok" gains from it, but nothing life-changing. But as you say, you're better off just buying the damned crypto itself these days - so many low cap alt coins to hedge your bets across and you only need 1 to do 100x from fractions of a cent to make some serious cash if you spent the time in advance to thoroughly research the project. But that said, the comment up-screen about basically heating your (small) house for free in the winter time is a valid if you're that way inclined.

Will, I'd vent that miner through a little hole in the wall, then allow a little fan to blow the cooled room air out over it. That takes away the bulk of heat load so the mini split doesn't have to work so hard. You also have to make a hole to let air in to balance pressure. That gives you some fresh air.
That's what I thought too but hes in vegas, is hot there. However natural cooling will work great in other climates.

I just build a shed in my backyard that has some ASICs in it. It's making around 120 dollars a day but that's paying for all the electricity right now. I'm on about 1.5 acres and have plenty of south facing land with no trees. My next plan is to add a huge solar array to supplement that electric usage. My electric usage for the shed is ~800 dollars a month. If I could cut that in half with a grid tie system that would be pretty slick. Thanks for sharing the video

Thanks for all your videos! I'm about to put in a off grid solar system and your content is worth its weight in uranium. Bitcoin will always be around but the other cryptoes gain value in coalition with the use case they specifically offer i.e. payment rails, NFTs ,data sourcing, etc. 99% of crypto may become unavailable to 99% of US residents due to the unfair regulatory environment. Never put all your eggs in one basket.
For the ASIC miner, ,you should consider direct venting the exhaust directly outside. In many cases it is cheaper to cool outside air, than the exhaust from the basic miner. Large computer datacenter do this.

I agree, but only if the air coming in to the building is dry (should be ok in the desert)... But if it's humid or salt air (I get both) your gear won't last as long.
Was wondering the same thing, just run an AC duct from the rear to outside if you need to keep the inside cool

Great stuff Will, I started following all your videos ages ago to learn how to build a mining farm, still glad I did, learnt heaps as I'm all mechanical/PC based not 1 amp of experience with elec lol .....So twice as stocked to see you put one (or a few lol) together yourself, Sept 2021 was ideal time to setup, stay on it, forget market downturns, 10-20 years is good, my advice is HODL 20% sell what's mined every cycle top, good on you. 2 years I been following and researching first, as with electricity, safety first! :)

I didn't even know that you were in on the mining but glad to hear that you've taken it on. I learn so much about solar from your videos still in the process of bringing my set up to completion. I got 4x345watt panels 3kw iconica inverter and 6x12v 100ah batteries, and still not enough to run my pc day and night mining with the Radeon vii. So more panels and another charge controller might be needed. Also I am in England the sun light can seem like a gift from the gods at times. Been thinking to make a complete new system to be the back up and fool the inverter to thinking that it's the grid power

I have one rig using solar power from my rv. Works great except I live in Wisconsin and the sun doesn’t stay that high in the fall. There is three 385 watt solar panels and 4 one hundred amp hour batteries on my rv which will run the 350 watt rig 24/7 if the days are sunny. Not making a Fortune but having fun with this new endeavor. Getting cards is the most difficult and they are very expensive.
why did I not subscribed to this channel back then which I've seen DIY batteries and van videos. This channel covers most of my current interests.
Try building a plenum for your Mining rig and vet the plenum to the outside.
So, the cool air will go into your rig, and the hot air will be vented to the outside via the plenum.
This is what, for example, Amazon/Netflix does to keep cooling costs low.
Absolutely - no point using a heat pump / aircon to extract the heat, even with a COP of say 4. Only problem could be the noise, depending on the length of the duct - might need some sound absorber in it and some bends.
Smart idea
In hot summer climates like Vegas, the problem is that venting any air outside pulls in the 120F air from somewhere else. Would work in winter, since Vegas does get cold, but then you'd do better to keep the heat inside your home.
Will, I was totally lost on this video but that's because I'm in UK and my system is totally off grid with only 1200w panels. Saying all that it was interesting and it's also really good to know how far you have come from those early days . My best to you all the way from this desperate place called UK.

Mate! We have purchased a couple of hectares here in NZ. I’m trying to put this together in my head 1/ it’s loud, ok I’ll put the rig a sound deadening shed. 2/ it’s produces heat, ok I duct the heat into my tunnel house to keep the plants warm in winter. 3/ my intended grid tie 8 kilowatt solar set up could power a rig that drops 3k US per year and still charge my low use two bedroom home. 4/ it’s plug and play so even a fifty something moron like me can make to work. Sincere thank you for planting a seed on how to maximize the potential of our tiny homestead.
Looking at Washington state. I see it has one of the lowest electric rates and mild temperatures year round, at least in the coastal areas but it suffers in annual sunshine. Again I've only stayed & worked in coastal areas. I bought my sailboat in Port Angeles & lived aboard off & on for a couple months. Constant rain & grey sky's was really starting to take it's toll on my mental health.
I would love a walk through on the off grid solar powering your GPU mining grid. Being in California TOU is killing me but I do have solar now. I’d prefer to just have my rig be off grid and power separate. I have a smaller set up only powering 6 580 8G on a 1k power supply. Any videos on that would be helpful!
I'm in the same boat and my electric bill is killing me for running 3000 kwh to get 1.3G hashrate. My bill is over $1,000 per month and need to install Solar
You can put the miners on a schedule so they don't mine during TOU. Solar helps a lot though since it makes it's power during peak times. There is still the evening hours to consider though.

I recall watching a British youtuber that used miners as the "battery" in his grid tie solar system. Interesting concept. Though cooling costs and market crypto price would have a lot to do with it.

A few years ago, after doing the maths many times, I ordered the leading edge Ant-miner which arrived just in time for early winter. After 5 months of keeping my flat warm, it had paid for itself & made £130 profit. I only have grid power which costs about 15p/kWh here but I would have paid the same for the 800W in an electric heater.
It's earnings rate is now well surpassed so I only power it on during cold spells when it costs more to run than it earns, but is still net cheaper than running an electric heater.
I built a large wooden enclosure for it, designed to reduce the noise & direct the warm air flow. If doing it again, I'd design the enclosure differently - it worked quite well, but the noise pattern wasn't what I expected. And I'd use GPUs so I could sell them & buy new every other year.
I was thinking the same thing. Just use it in the winter when you need heat

You still need a good internet connection to do this! If you have a slow connection or high latency, it won't work very well.

@@alans9099 yeah, it does. Otherwise the solution packets arrive late and you get a high percentage of stale values. Remember that speed is a crucial factor in mining blocks.
I bought the same mini split from Amazon a few months ago. Simple to install. I didn't lay my coil down.
David Pos did a video recently, installing mini split, on solar. He had a tool to flare the cut to size, ends of the pipes. Dealt with all the tricky stuff, drying and pressurising.

Re: "why doesn't everyone do it?" Not enough GPU cards or ASIC Miners to go around. Gamers already can't find graphics cards. Vehicle makers are facing chip shortage even. So unless chip manufacturers increase production, there's just not enough supply. The solar is the easiest part of the equation.

I'm a bit skepical, I know servers are vacuums for current, and it adds up FAST (especially at night). I'd love to see an actual spreadsheet covering everyting (solar panels, inverters, batteries, cablng, computers, AC's, etc.) you have purchased, all your utility needs/costs, the amount you actually earn/day/mo/yr, how much time you spend on it/day, and a comparison of actual income vs costs. The video is kind of all over the place, with no running totals, and a lot of it sounds like "justification" (like how much do you actually spend in a year on heating in a newish house in LV?). Have you gone electric for water heating and induction for cooking? There's a lot missing from the "Free Money" part.
It takes quite a while to earn back the expense of all the equipment. Roughly $50k. 4.5 years to break even excluding maintenance and equipment replacements by his ROI figures. Plus have you watched BTC in the past year it has lost $10250 in coin value fluctuations from $50000-$40000 per coin all year.
If invested in standard indexed ETFs at 4.5 years he'd be sitting on ~$19500-$25000 in profit + the original $50000 invested .
So why don't you make such a spreadsheet? Relying on others is the lazy persons method. You'd learn a lot, too.

If you have 50k to spend and you're banking on the appreciation of btc, buying btc is probably better.
The cost of bitcoin will always trend, mainly in this part of the year, now I prefer play a game and earn with this like in block monsters.

curious how gpu mining profitability is going to be affected when ETH switches to proof of stake next year.
It's going to dump almost to nothing. None of the other GPU minable coins have the use cases of Eth and millions of cards will be trying to mine them at once.
I'll just mine something else or use the cards for gaming. And eth keeps saying it's next year. Every year

Will have you done any optimization with overclocking and under volting for those cards? You can significantly reduce your power usage and increase performance.

If you're thinking about efficiency, wouldn't it be advised to skip the GPU rig entirely and get another ASIC? Aren't those significantly more efficient, or am I missing something? (resale value perhaps?)
The new cards are very efficient. And typically you mine something else that's not btc, then convert to btc. Which can make GPU mining indirectly for btc more effective
Using nice hash does it automatically. It's really nice. You might make a few cents more mining btc direct like the asic, but it's not that big of a difference.

I know very little about bitcoin, so this is a straight up question without opinion. Doesn't bitcoin get "more difficult" to mine as time goes on? How does that factor in to these ROI calculations that are being looked at over multiple years?
Yes it can. And how much you make varies. There is absolute risk to mining or holding any crypto. If everyone dumped Bitcoin today, you wouldn't make anything. But I don't think that will happen. I think btc has a lot of utility and the price will go up in due time.
@@WillProwse Understood, but assuming a person just takes the historical average increase in value (a grand assumption with bitcoin's volatile valuations) per year, would someone expect the returns to diminish over time, as mining bitcoin becomes more processor intensive? Or would the expectation be that the per-coin value appreciates faster, such that the fewer coins mined in the future would still be worth more when priced in dollars?
In other words, assuming bitcoins appreciate at the historical rate, would you expect to make the same, more, or less (in real dollars) in years 2, 3 & 4 with a rig you built/capitalized today?
@@danh2716 don't miners get some of their profits from transaction fees not just the new bitcoins created each block? More adoption of Bitcoin would mean more transaction fees so more money for miners?? I've no idea if that's correct haha
The difficulty is not necessarily tied to time. It inrceases linearly the more miners are mining that coin. So the more people are mining the less profitable it becomes for each of them, which can lead to some of them mining a different coin. The system kinda self regulates.

I keep wondering if there will ever come a time where the hashing could be redirected into useful computation… like dna sequencing, or Cpu/gpu/ai services.
Proof of work is useful... Also projects like that already existed for literally years where you can outsource your computer for research.
Check out folding@home. It's one such mechanism. Not hashing per se, but like SETI@home, is a distributed computing attempt to produce something constructive.

Question about that AC unit: Pioneer makes a DIY mini-split with different length hoses, is that what you used in the shed? I was shying away from Mr. Cool because they seem to only sell a 25' diy model.
You mentioned 600w for the two cards. Did you optimize the settings on Power Draw for those 3060/70/80 ? Because as far as i know you get them down to 150w each instead of 220+
No way! I will look into that now. I am doing max consumption because I have a lot of power available. I should lower them.

Lower Core clock/ raise Mem clock ( Mem Temp is Key) / Power Limit to Like 80% or so.
@@WillProwse 3070 is more efficient then 2x 6600xt at the wall. software doesnt show proper watts for 6600xt
Yeah there are card down to 55w and newer cards at 75w with just a bit of tweaking.
@@WillProwse if those are 3060ti’s then you can get them down to 130w and a regular non lhr 3060 you can get down to 100w

Yes, this is the problem with not being a large scale miner who buys the brand new equipment directly from China. But only for btc, there are other profitable crypto to mine with GPUs
Great video. I had forgotten to like until you mentioned that we should message you with the issues with we have with your opinions. I love that attitude. My only issue is that you don't discuss what the possibility of failure. These are huge investments in technology and these things fail. Equipment fails, laws change and energy prices change. I'm still super tempted to start with used panels, used Lead acid batteries and my 3070 gaming computer.

No you just have not had anyone fully or properly teach you it's something any age learn and it it fairly basic but anyways his videos are always the best!
the rig itself is pretty straight forward, but when you get into doing it safely and securely, that when mining becomes more in depth. Also what types of coins to mine ect. Mining is simple to get into, but way more complicated when it comes to prevention and security after that. You mentioned going to washington state and moving near a hydro damn. Would you not do solar or do it a lot less, as they wouldn't be as efficient up north ? I need to get a miner to replace my heater as well ( im on a electric heat , so my furnace is just a coil wasting money )
