Okay but like, can we also talk about how the directors used the clicking on the nails like prucussion instruments along with the music!? Because that was awesome and SO creative!!
I genuinely think that benny and Nina have hooked up but they weren't able to get into a relationship because Nina went away to college. That stay with me in the dispatch song said *history *.
Their relationship is different in the musical and the movie. In the stage musical they've never dated before. They were just friends and their relationship only becomes romantic after Nina comes back from college. In the movie, however, they are childhood sweethearts who broke up when Nina went to college and are now rekindling their relationship. So in the original stage musical Nina clearly doesn't know anything about the size of Benny's... taxi. However in the movie he's her ex so presumably she does know lol.
@@IHARumor yeah i also saw other versions of the stage musical where nina was depicted as an innocent, god-fearing christian girl. not sure if that was in the original stage musical tho
Funny Cuca mentions, “bun in the oven”. ‘Cause some of the overseers of this movie thought that Nina’s personal conflict wasn’t “high enough stakes” for her to leave college. But Lin Manuel Miranda was adamant that her inner turmoil was interesting enough without delving into negative stereotypes.
@@kevinmay9151 No but it wasn’t a part of the original musical. Because Lin, the writer, DIDNT want to give into negative stereotype since the characters were based around people he knew and grew up around, not just Latinos and their stereotypes. Some producers I believe it was wanted that to be the plot, but he refused. That’s what I’ve heard anyway. I was a fan of the musical before the movie, but I’m not that into it all.
I think he was off base with that judgment. A pregnancy would've been a bit extreme, but I think the conflict of the original play -- where Nina is unable to keep up with her classes because of having to work two jobs -- feels a lot more relatable. The conflict she has in the movie feels forced and overdramatic imo.
I love that detail of Nina having straight hair and getting her curls back when she gets home. It’s a small visual that shows she was trying to look more “white” to avoid the discrimination.
@Kid A Its not with everyone but me personally I used to relax my hair/heavily straighten it to fit in with people whose hair already looked like that. Because I was ashamed of my curls and how people would point them out.

SAME! It was so amazingly fun to watch, and never took away from the seriousness. If anything, the contrast enhanced all the issues the characters face, while directly representing their dreams, e.g. their form of escapism.
I love how gossip and talk is portrayed in this way. Gossip was used as a form of sisterhood. MOST of it has been warped to be skanky or mean. (Some of it is, it depends on the person telling it)
Yeah. Personally, I find the topics they discuss a little questionable, but I like how (gossip) it serves as a way that they connect with each other as a community, especially cause they're happy to see Nina
Fun thing I just realized: So Nina arrives from the West Coast with straight hair. As she gets back on track, her hair becomes curlier, like saying she's coming back to herself. It's nice since most of the time it turns into the opposite, curly hair turns straight for character development

I just thought it says a lot that they actually say “I don’t know” after finding out Nina dropped out because it shows how Nina is a really smart person and overall really hardworking and determined to get what she wants.
