TRAIN DRIVER'S VIEW: Train to Bergen diverted over the Gjøvik Line

  • Due to heavy track work between Asker and Drammen, today's train is diverted over the Gjøvik Line to Hønefoss with speed information!
    Speedinformation: At some places the maximum speed displayed will be higher than the base speed shown on the signal. This is because some trains are allowed for higher speeds than the base speed. Almost all rolling stock used for passenger transport is allowed for higher speeds. Freight trains has to run on the basic speed.
    We start out going east before branching off to the Gjøvik Line going North. We continue on the Gjøvik Line until Roa where we head off onto the Roa - Hønefoss Line. The line between Roa and Hønefoss is mainly used by freight trains going from Alnabru to Roa.
    At Viul between Jevnaker and Hval, also known as Waffleheim, one of the Herd members shows how it is done! Mr. WarmeWaffle and wife greeting me with Mario and Norwegian flags.
    Woohoo!
    Since we were running late the Traffic controller decided to meet Train 63 and 602 at Hønefoss instead of Veme. We had to make sure Track 1 one was clear, so we went up the west end and reversing back into track 5 before letting passengers on and off. This made the whole operation really smooth and train 602 was not delayed.

    Great video. It was really cool to see the Gjøvik Line part of the video. When I heard that the Bergens Line was diverting over Gjøvik Line I hope You would be the driver on one of those diverted trains. And You were and filmed it, can't really ask for more.

    I'm really enjoying this "new" route. What I'm noticing the most is how much of the route is going through boreal forest rather than along water.

    Great this opportunity to have an unusual view of Norway by railway !
    In the first part, before Roa, it reminded me a lot a train trip in Finland (Rovaniemi to Helsinki) : 12 hours seeing nothing else than a forest of birch and fir trees, birch and fir trees, birch and fir trees, on both sides with a fairly flat relief.
    THANK you very much to offer us these variations on your beautiful landscape, which are so different in winter/summer, SUN/Moonlight, Old/Fresh Snow, Day/Night : Always captivating (very amazing at night) and even in motorcycle to have a complementary view and better understand what we see from the train.
    I have traveled on these lines to Stavanger, Bergen, Flåm, Trondheim, Bodø, Narvik with Interrail card, in 1974 : less tunnels then on the Bergen line ! Thank you to show us where the line passed before !
    THANK you to share your life of train driver with us, to share the landscape you love, as the Flåm view by drone, and others great Videos : you can be proud of your beautiful country ! THANK YOU , thank you, thank ... ...

    Great to see new scenery! HCG; what did you have to do to qualify to take this detour? Also, passing through Roa at around 59:23 don't you mean the Gjøvik Line goes "down to the right" (text says "left").

    It is very cool to see a new railroad line. I hope there are coming some videos from the Bergen Line in Summer this year, because I really like it when you see all these lakes and everything is green.
    I guess you saw some cabrides made by dulevoz, doesn't you? Nice idea to show the maximum speed and other informations.
    And another question: I heard that there is a rifle on Norwegian driver's cabins. Is it correct?

  • @zoqaeski
    @zoqaeski 5 лет назад +2

    Cool, a new route! Was it a nice change to drive via a different route? How often do you have to drive on a particular line to keep your route knowledge up-to-date?
    That interesting shunting movement at Hønefoss wouldn't have been allowed to occur in Australia: passenger trains are not permitted to reverse if they have passengers on board. For many years, V/line made everyone get off the train whenever it was split or joined, due to safety concerns about sudden movement from coupling (even though the trains in question use Scharfenberg couplers).

In the UK we are used to seeing surfaces vandalised with spray paint but I would have hoped that Norwegian youth would have more respect for their wonderful country than to dreate such vandalism on every available surface as the train leaves Oslo.

    The train will not stop til Hønefoss? Not for passengers, but there are trains in opposite direction: 25:30 Nittedal x Class 75; 33:58 Hakadal x freight mit 2 x 185 „El 19“; 45:39 Monsrud x Class 75. @ 54:44 no stop at Grua, but x with waiting freight with Traxx 3; @ 1:25:30 the train stops @ Hønefoss, before it arrives there at the regular platform for the x with train 602.

    The movements at Hønefoss -- as a result of late running -- were very interesting. Thanks for explaining the manoeuvre, HCG. I presume that an announcement was made before arrival at Hønefoss to inform passengers intending to get off there, so that they wouldn't panic (as I would have done!) when the train initially ran through the station without stopping.
    By the way, I don't know whether signallers in my country (the UK) would have been that flexible. I've a feeling they would probably have stuck rigidly to the pre-arranged meet -- and made BOTH trains late... Well done, NSB!

    Thank you, HCG. It was a lot of fun to travel a different line. Norway is just as beautiful on this detour route. It took me almost all the time out of Oslo that there were no up or down signs along the track. Did the gnomes steal them to play hockey? Also, I 've noticed a black sign with one or three green stripes. You've probably answered that before, but what do they mean? Love your videos.

    Hi, I am a train driver student, , I did see the 40 sign, and of course yelllow flash is a warning for the next, but the very last sign at the station said 70+10 so why did you have to make a stop at Movatn..? And how can you get both Signal 22 «Kjør» and Signal 23 «Forvent stopp» at the same time (25:31) ..? What does your signal at 32:25 mean..?

    • @RailCowGirl

      Yes I have. Driving freight was heaps of fun. Heavy and long. You need to think differently compared to driving a passenger train. You need to plan you driving further a head in you mind as you go, this to utilize the topography for freight train.

    One question: sometimes the Vmax speeds that you posted did not correspond to the speed limit signs. Is there a reason for this?

    • @RailCowGirl
      @RailCowGirl  5 лет назад +1

      I have the opposite direction as well, and will be released at some point ;)
      When it comes to speed, the Vmax does correspond with the speed sign. If you look at the speed signs they can show 9 +10 under. +10 is "overspeed" allowed for rolling stock approved for "overspeed". Like the train I was driving is allowed to add +10 or what ever the sign under says. If I had sleepers (WLAB2) with me, then I would not be allowed to take advantage of the "overspeed" as they are not approved for that.

      Most likely sensors for whatever train control scheme they have in Norway.

    If you ever come this way again, HinduCowgirl, could you please make us a 360 ’ video? The scenery is unusually beautiful.

    What is the highest part of this line. Surprised to see a few isolated small patches of snow remaining.

    I notice that a fence with a white rail has been built along part of the route. Too low to keep animals or people off the line, so what is it for?

      I think it is a cable duct - used for signaling and telecom.

    1:41 is that normal for that car to go there? Looks like a ghost car that went thru the green box. 🤔Thanks for the great videos.

    Nice to revisit a familiar line:
    Bergensbanen ran via Roa before 1940 and during the years 1945 to 1987(?) because the travel time was (I believe) some 30 minutes shorter that way. (Durinig war-time they saved coal by running electric wherever possible).
    I always disembarked at Grefsen when returning home from Bergensbanen as I lived not far from that station.

      thanks for this comment, It saved me asking if this was indeed the old route :)

      @svenpran2578 5 лет назад

      @@jamie514 It was indeed.
      But it might be interesting to know that from June 1908 until November 1909 travelers on Bergensbanen had a rather cumbersome itinerary east of Gulsvik. The line east of Gulsvik was not yet opened so steam ships took passengers and cargo on lake Krøderen to Krøderbanen (the now vintage railway line between Krøderen and Vikersund stations) with further rail connection to Drammen and Oslo V. (The Krøderbanen track can still be seen branching off to the West at Vikersund station).
