WARNING: In case I didn't make it clear enough in the video, be careful when modding batteries and power accessories and perform all of this stuff at your own risk. I would also recommend sticking with official batteries like Sony's FZ-100 as cheaper models may not be up to the task of powering higher current devices. Finally, while these smaller batteries have the same voltage, max current draw is different. So don't use this little fellas on a light that uses NP-F990 batteries like COB lights etc. All that aside, happy modding!

Cue inexperienced people shocking the crap out of themselves. 😎 The capacity issue means you're going to have to buy many more of them. Seems easier to just use NP-Fs. Having one of these adapters in the bag, just for emergencies, seems likely.

I shoot videos underground while exploring abandoned mines. I wanted a single battery to power both an Aputure F7 LED light and a GoPro. I purchased an Andycine battery plate with D-Tap and USB for the NP-F970. Similar to what you described, we used the shell of an NP-F550 to make a dummy battery to power the light. A short USB-C cord powers the GoPro. Now I can film for hours with just one battery mounted on the rig. I carry a backup battery in my pack and I'm good for a long day underground. I've used it for about a year and it's great.

Sweet! I have almost a half dozen BP-900 series batteries that I haven't used since I got rid of my Canon XL1 years ago. Awhile back I bought a cheap LED light that uses NP-Fs. The NP-Fs came with a cheap charger that takes all day to charge just one, so sometimes I'm sweating it if I forget to put one on charge the night before.
Had to do a lot of searching but I think I've finally found the parts to do this.
BTW, I found that Adorama has the battery charger plates for only $1.99 each. But probably only worth it if you have a big enough order to get free shipping. Thanks for the idea!

LP-E6 user here. I think NPFs are better, but sadly most of my gear uses LP-E6. So my solution for low battery life was to mod the LP-E6. I removed the garbage lithium cells in a generic pack. Then added standard 18650 cells, which are like 20mm longer, but have double the capacity and 2-4x C-rating. Now I can power my Blackmagic Pocket 4k for a full hour.

People don't be afraid to try this stuff. Just be cautious, and if not sure, DON'T be afraid to enguire.. besides Calib and many of us, the answers are out there. The hardest part is knowing how to properly word the question. "NO SUCH THING AS A DUMB QUESTION ". Keep tinkering!

Even a small spark, for example from cutting the terminals on the cells themselves, could lead to the cells catching fire. Li-Ion batteries are notorious for burning off in a large stab flame.
I'd even go as far as saying, that if you really want to do this (I strongly advise against doing it) - do it outside and/or with a fire extinguisher nearby - stay safe.

Hey! How "easy" do you think it would be to create something like a battery pack for use with a dummy battery? The particular use case is an event/presentation in the field (away from power source) where I need to have sustained power for longer than I trust a single battery to last. (yes, I realize that this is what v-mount batteries are for, but I'm not interested in getting into that ecosystem. Plus, I'm curious about this DIY solution.) In particular, do you think it's possible to create something that allows for multiple batteries that can be swapped out? However, now that I think about it, there would be no way to accurately gauge which battery was being used and how close to depletion it was.

But what's the point in converting your stuff to use those low capacity batteries instead of the actual NP-F batteries? I don't get it and I've been an electrical engineer so I'm quite educated in the matter. Probably the first advice from you that I don't understand why the hell do it.

    • @dslrvideoshooter

@@TheSpiv The same BMS PCB function can be found inside camera batteries. No need to have dual BMS. In fact that would probably be very bad which is why we want to remove it and let the Sony/camera battery take over so it can protect against over current and voltage draw.

A while back when I switched cameras, I picked up a few of the plates for my newer battery so that I could adapt the 3rd party chargers I have. This also lets me swap between npf and camera batteries on a single charger (assuming I don't need to charge more than one thing at a time).
