- not paying nearly £500 for a couple of camera batteries!, I found a cheaper option, if i needed to buy the batteries and charger it would have been about £70 for after market (knock off) makita batteries and charger. (plus rigging)
This could be used to power all kinds of stuff as well, not just a camera.

it disconnects the battery when it falls below a set voltage to protect from over discharge. turns out im terrible for leaving the camera running and have ruined one of the batteries by discharging it too much a few times!

I rather regret two things:
1. Not discovering your channel years ago.
2. Discovering your channel last week and as a result I have actually done bugger all other than watch far too many of your videos.
Your skill set is insane, you are the definitive ‘polymath’ and your attitude always seems to be ‘I can do that.
I love the humorous subtitled quips.
I would love to know the back story (how you developed your skills set) but also respect your privacy.

btw - You can get a DC/DC converter with a 3rd trim-pot called "UVLO" (under-voltage lock-out) - with this you can set the input voltage at which the converter will stop operation. This can prevent your battery from over-discharging.
Surprising that Makita didn't build-in an over-discharge protection in their batteries...
He specifically mentions they're knock-offs.
As far as i know only Milwaukee has under voltage protection in the batteries, dewalt and makita has it in the tool controller.

Interesting idea, I will bare it in mind, but at the moment I'm only using a 70D and a monitor with a separate battery which last long enough for what I'm doing. Very nicely thought out and executed.

And a very frugal approach for a solution for your power needs.
As an alternative, overhead power outlets in the workshop can make it much easier to run extension cords without having to wrap them around corners and furniture.

Excellent video for budget power. I'm no DIY guy, so I use same Small Rig parts with laptop powerbank. I got a 2 Amp one with a display and adjustable voltage for $50.00. Still a lot cheaper than V or Gold Lock mount and battery, and a lot less weight. It powers my Blackmagic Pocket 4K for 4 Hours straight.
I had to watch to the very end in the hope you replaced that disaster of a tip on the soldering iron.

Smallrig makes a nice pivoting cheese-plate that I attached a Milwaukee battery adapter and voltage reg board. That lets me tilt the display to be more visible and tuck the battery right up when I don't use the LCD on my GH4
What a good idea. I could use this for running my Bluetooth amp/spk in the garden.
Just need some cheap batteries from Lidl/Aldi.
I love how power tool li-ion packs are becoming an almost-standard, certainly in the DIY/hacker world they are with these adapter plates easily available and they make as good a standard as any. Seen lots of people build them into their projects.
Yeah, but using off brand batteries in high drain devices or fast charge devices is a very bad idea. They become off brand generic wrap batteries because they cannot handle the current rating in the first place. Lithium ion batteries are too dangerous to screw around with when the quality of the cells is unknown.
@@tarstarkusz The drain of a camera isn't going to be higher than power tools, the batteries have a protection/charge controller built in

2024 checking in... prices for v mount batteries are absolutely freakin stupid right now. I found a dewalt battery solution but I wouldn't mind making one of these bad boys too. I like that voltage reg

Bit late to the party, and im guessing you probably know, but incase you don't or it helps someone else, voltage is a very poor indicator of stste of charge with lithium batteries.
That's only good for lead based cells.
It gives an indication but as demonstrated, the voltage drop is not linear at all so you can easily ruin lithium cells if you don't use a bms or battery management system to control things.

I suggest an automotive storage battery located low on the base to replace the weights. 10 times the Amp hours for double the cost of an import drill battery Add a dedicated charger for use overnight.

Very neatly done - looking at your rig "as a whole", could you have (with hindsight) included a big ol' lead acid battery in the base, acting as both stabilising weight AND power source?
Some halogen table lights exploit their transformer as the (required) heavy base.

I had the same thought. We did that for a rolling laptop stand used in a healthcare environment. It would last for almost two shifts.
Thanks for the nice video. I had the same idea to power my BMPCC4K from a bunch of cheap Lidl 20V/2Ah batteries that I got on clearance. I already have the same kind of regulator used here but I don't trust it enough. My plan is to add an inline fuse on both input and output side, then use some heavy zener diodes to clamp the voltage to a safe maximum, pulling enough current to blow the fuse on the output side if the regulator fails and passes the full battery power through. An easier option would be to use lower voltage batteries; V-mount batteries are 14-16V. The Lidl batteries are simply 5 cells in series, an option would be to bypass one if the charging circuit could be adapted.
Don't overdo the emergency.
Instead of zener diodes, I suggest using isolated DC-DC converters or Triac cowbar protection based on the TL431 IC.
It is not recommended to bypass 1 battery. It's better to use an old laptop battery. This has the additional advantage that in the event of a converter failure, the battery voltage will be supplied to the device - i.e. too low.
BTW: It doesn't make much sense to limit the current on the converter. This has applications in battery charging and LED powering.
Thanks, I had completely forgotten I wrote this. I can only agree on your suggestions. I ended up buying a set of D-tap V-lock batteries and charger on a sale for this application.
The additional cost of soldering tool and also a voltage meter tool? Also it takes up much more space.
Excellent channel, your projects are really enjoyably to watch. Can you make the text font a bit bigger.
Nice job as always. It is really worth avoiding running the battery flat. Over-discharge can lead to internal failures and fire (in rare cases), particularly if the cells in the battery become unbalanced. The Makita tool would shut down at a safe level but your psu will do its damdest to keep the camera running. There has to be a neat way to introduce a low battery alarm but I can't think of it at the moment. As an expat Yorkshireman, I'm still in shock at the cost of the genuine batteries.....
Low voltage protection circuit set at 14v would do the trick or BMS will cost about 10ish bucks

Ordered a voltage regulator just like yours and had to view this vid at 2:16 go get an idea of where the heat sink goes. Got mine from China and slow boat delivery. Did you have to take that

I was thinking of doing this with DeWalt batteries but didn't want to turn u on set with bright yellow batteries that reflected in things too!
My old lodger had the batteries you where looking at, IDX?, and they would run his Sony A7S with an external monitor / recorder all day, like 7-8 hours. So there is a difference and if its on lacation for professional filming then you want pro, industry standard gear, but everyone hates how much these things cost. I mean, why buy a Red camera when a BlackMagic 6k does a better job for way cheaper? (I've used both, I know - neither is an Arri)

It's too complicated but it's ok since you have plenty of tool accus. this construction protrudes a lot and you don't need to see the dc-dc converter all the time. I'd made it more compact.

Yeah its definitely a bit over sized! I am actually putting together a new rig right now because last year the C100 had an accident and the HDMI port got damaged, ive been using the Canon M50 in the meantime and the footage is less than inspiring so ive picked up some BMMCC's for a main rig and seperate compact rig. Im using the sony L series batteries this time which are much smaller and dont need a converter. Ill re-configure the tool battery set up to use on lights.

There is maybe another way, dummy battery in the EOS and set voltage to EOS battery voltage. Then camera display should show battery capacity as the circuitry will monitor voltage fall-off
You can actually house a small DC regulator inside the dummy battery so it is a neat idea. However, the camera might be more sensitive to voltage spikes from the battery circuit than it is on the external input, so caution is advised if going this route.

they were off ebay, i bought them in 2018 and the seller is now defunct unfortunately but there are loads available, to be honest though it is worth buying originals, the ones that came with the drill set had lasted like 10 years of professional abuse!

I film quite a lot for each video which then gets trimmed down into watchable content, i know thats not what you meant though. I do enjoy the filming but It can be a bit of a pain to film when im trying to get my teeth into a project so I want it to be as convenient as possible, hence the Jib and better camera etc, now it is so easy to move the camera around im more likely to film stuff!

TIP: For better battery life, do not discharge it below 15V, as this leads to drastic degradation. If possible, charge it when the voltage drops below 19V.
