In this latest collaboration between Bruno Cathala and Ludovic Maublanc, players must buy the favor of the gods in their race to be the first player to build two cities in the Ancient Greek island group known as the Cyclades.
Victory requires respect for all the gods - players cannot afford to sacrifice to only one god, but must pay homage to each of five gods in turn. Each turn, the players bid for the favors of the gods, as only one player can have the favor of each god per turn - and each player is also limited to the favor of a single god per turn.
Ares allows the movement of player armies and the building of Fortresses.
Poseidon allows players to move their navies and build Ports.
Zeus allows his followers to hire priests and build temples.
Athena provides her worshipers with philosophers and universities.
Apollo increases the income of his worshipers.

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

I love Cyclades. The base game is great. Hades expansion is great. Even the Kemet monstrs crossover is fun. I'm not a fan of the Titans expansion as it completely changes the game. I think that one is more for people who don't really like Cyclades to start with.
That's interesting! I have seen some reviews where that expansion is considered essential.

I read the rule book for the new cyclades and saw the new look. There are changes that I think are good/different but some that I don't like or won't meaningfully change the game....most of the rules are the same. It feels like more like an expansion than a new game. The leader troops add some flavour, but the mercenaries dont seem well designed to be different enough from regular troops. The modular board is a nice touch. Buildings happen faster, bidding escalates to higher cost faster, monsters have maintenance costs....I think it will have more of a runaway effect for aggressive players as the mercenaries can load up troops faster. As surprising as this is to me, so far, I am actually leaning towards not backing it and keeping the versions I have. Just my two cents on my first thoughts so far.
I don't like the idea that faster is always better, the auto builds and accelerating bids. I like that the bidding was petty

Very nice delve into this version! This version looks alright, but if someone can get his hands on the base game and its expansions (especially Titans and Monuments) for a comparable price, I'd recommend that route instead, since you get a lot of great modules and options which makes for a really rich, deep experience.
Gotta say I don't really like the art. Also, when you said you usually alternate between base and titans, were you including the hades expansion in base game Alex?
Alex, I'm relatively new to the channel but it has become my number that I get all my board game info from. I would really like to see your 5/5 list some time, or maybe just a part of it if it is too long. Anyways thanks for the content, find it really informative and helpful.

Look back on old videos.. about a year ago he had a spread sheet with his 5/5 games.. only a few since then.. 5/5 does not match or mean the same as his top 100.. I have played most of the 5/5 games and I have yet to be disappointed
Looks like spread sheet stoped April 2022. Since I can remember this, arena the contest tanarus, DEI, A feast for Odin, akropolis, expeditions, and unconscious mind…
Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it. Quick query about the basic game rules if anyone can help. When you invade a territory buildings are not destroyed, but what about additional food markers, are they kept on or taken off? Thanks anyone who can answer.
That new art and especially that box cover are a nightmare. Way to completely ruin a facelift attempt. I still remember that fat cartoony hydra from the first announcement and thought to myself if this is what the box will be, I’m out. Overall it looks like it was inspired by Asterix and Obelix

You ever play Cyclades 2 player? OG Cyclades plays great at that count, and is the typical count I play with.
@@MattD007 I haven't bought it yet because I have read very different opinions on the 2 player mode. I have to say that I very much prefer the look of the old game board though.
What you said about balancing the feel of Base and Titans with regards to how spread out things are is very promising. I haven’t played Cyclades in a few years and previously sold it. I disliked Titans because the ships felt useless. I liked Cyclades, but wished there were larger islands. So a happy middle ground is awesome.
I loved the bidding in Cyclades, and this looks way more interesting. I was starting to miss Cyclades and regret selling it. Now, I’m glad I waited.
Most videos say that bidding is not as important as before, but it's rather a dudes on a map game now. I hate the art direction, but love the modular map.
I will pass since for me titans is not Cyclades. I like it my Cyclades to be a for sale.and chess crossover rather than pure ameritrash.
Love original cyclades but alot of these changes improve the game for me, can't wait for the kickstarter to go up.

Will it replace the retail edition?
Just so you know, Cyclades is pronounced kee-KLAH-dess, (emphasis on the second syllable). Greek is a language where each letter is consistent. So no such thing as the letter C being making both a soft and a hard sound. In Greek, the letter C acts like the English letter K.
May be what you say is right in Greek language... but then what about "Cyclops", we dont say it as Kiklops
@@fmoros cyclops though is an English word, derived from Greek. Yes it’s of Greek origin, but we’ve absorbed it into our language. Cyclades is not an English word, it’s just the name of a Greek location.

I'm looking at the meeples version. I'm a sucker for meeples.
IMO the original is the superior look and is more modular to fit your experience. Legendary is the designers picking what they feel was the best of all of it and mixing it into one game, while also distilling it down by 1/3 of the time.
So, whatever you feel if the best way to go would be the way to go. Do you like modular games where after you play you can add or subtract to get a better experience, or are you the type to want someone else to do that for you?
Will meeples and cardboard standees be the new standard for this game or is that just the prototype? It wouldn’t bother me either way, but making the game cheaper would probably help.
Someone in another video said that there will be a standee and a miniature version of the game
Great video, as always, even though not much surprise verdict (a good thing). My wife and I mostly game together, and occasionally get a group of 3-4. I’ve always been curious about the whole Kemet/innis/Cyclades games, and I know you’re very fond of them. I’ve heard Kemet & Innis aren’t great just for mostly 2 players. Curious of your thoughts on Cyclades for mostly 2 players. Thanks in advance, love the channel and your approach.
I think Cyclades and Inis are fun at two player; my wife and I have played Cyclades many times at that player count (the Titans expansion is not good at two though). We’ve played Inis less, but enough times for me to recommend it at 2 players. I haven’t tried Kemet at that player count though.
I know you've asked Alex specifically but I'll add my 2cents to give some extra perspective.
Kemet is the worst out of the 3 for 2P and I will never play it that way.
Inis and Cyclades though are both fantastic at 2! The only player count that is a big no is 3P Cyclades - you either have to play just 2, 4 or 5.
The reason 2P Cyclades works so well is because each player has 2 bidding tokens instead of 1 and will be bidding on 2 Gods per turn. You can potentially even out-bid your own bid! This opens up a lot of opportunities for clever play and becomes slightly thinkier (in a good way) since you are planning 2 actions per round. The thinkiness is not over the top due to the fact you only have one other player and their 2 actions to worry about so it's not analysis-paralysis inducing, rather it's juicier in the decision space. You also need to gain control of 3 Metropolis' instead of 2 which feels perfect time-wise at that player count.
Having said all that though, I wouldn't recommend 2P Cyclades if you've never played it before, it's best if you're already familiar with the game and are wanting to mix it up a bit. Throwing in the Hades expansions and some of its modules once you've played a couple of 2P games works brilliantly too.

Well, we only have the base game of the first edition, so we will have to see what the price point and shipping costs are to Canada. Some of the art is challenging.
So the Kickstarter has launched and the miniatures and artwork on the cards and components look great. The Standees in the Meeples pledge look good, the Meeples, when we already have the miniatures from 1.o are not to my liking. Due to the price point and shipping to Canada, will wait for retail and the reviews when the come in.
Wishing only the best for the campaign, but have to watch our spend.
Kratos is from God of War, Cronus is the titan.
That is all good news. My number 1 game sounds even better, now.
I’ve been holding off on buying OG Cyclades specifically to see how this edition turns out. Really happy to hear it’s good. But I don’t know if I got a great answer on if this is a good version to START with.
If money is less of an issue, I'd go for OG but only *with* expansions (which could be pricey). A lot of people feel OG Cyclades minus Titans is too slow and ponderous. I personally think the Monuments expansion adds a ton to the speediness and enjoyment of the game, and that expansion presumably isn't in this KS version.

You say 2,5 hours. BGG says hour to 90 minutes for base game and the same for legendary edition.
Is it also 2.5 hours with experienced played in your experience? That seems very long compared to the BGG concensus. I haven't played any version BTW

@@BoardGameCo than for the reply. Some people in my gaming group are more AP prone than others. That is ok, but it is good to know how long a game will take depending on the time available we can pick something else.

I am a Base+Hades fan, but not so much Titans. However some of the changes look good. The 3 Metropolis win, exponential bidding and cycling of gods sounds good. We may add them into the original if the rest of LE doesn’t pan out :)
I hate the new bidding, feels less tactical, I loved the knocking each other off. Looks like it's more about aggression and fights

Can someone help me why chose?
I have big three from Lang - Blood Rage, Rising Sun and Ankh, and i like them, especially RS and Ankh. On other hands i have Northgard, Tyrants of the Underdark, Clash of rage, Small Word of Warcraft and Iwari. Soon will have and Lords of Ragnarok which i expect to be on table for long time.
Is it Cyclades enough different from this games to be "must have" for my collection of area control games?
For people who backed Kemet:B&S is it worth it to back now Cyclades or is better to wait for retail version and buy it cheaper - discount and free shipping?
P.S. Only games whit Greek thematic i have are 7 Wonders and Elysium.

Hey folks! One difference which almost nobody mentions is, that in the Legendary Edition you can move your troops with Ares not once (as it was in the original) but almost infinite times by paying 1 gold per movement. It means, that if you have a big army which outnumbers the enemy by 4+ strength AND if you have enough money - you can wipe a lot of regions during one turn... without even using a dice. And other players can't do anything... looks weird. It's more dynamic but it is for sure a big possibility to break the game. Am I correct?
You could move multiple times in the original. "Some Gods grant you special actions. During his turn, a player may perform these actions multiple times, as long as he has enough GP to afford them."

Do they have Hades and Hecate as gods and goddess choices? They should or it is not legendary enough as an edition.
I think alot of people are trying to justify not being pissed off for investing in Cyclades by throwing shade. I have Cyclades but this version is going to be way better 🤷🏻♂️
I think a lot of people are trying to throw shade at the original Cyclades because they either never played it, or are justifying paying at crowdfunding.
Did you get the Kemet reprint? How'd that work out? If you printed out 1.5 rules you didn't need it, that's how.
Everyone has a right to their opinion, and trying to shoehorn your own bias into justifying what you consider other people's biases doesn't really accomplish much now does it?
You either like this new version or you don't. Whether this will replace OG Cyclades is very much up for debate, but if you don't like the art style it's already a pass.

This doesn't look very legendary. The art is a downgrade for sure (yes, art is subjective and this is my opinion). They made it look more childish looking as opposed to real beautiful art from the original.
Also, no expansion "fixed" anything, just gave the game a different feel, allowing people to mix and match how they wanted that game to play. Want a tighter map, play Titans. Want more of the same, but beefed up, add Hades. Having the ability to make the game what you want was the great part of Cyclades and their expansions.
This seems like an absolute cash grab. The Kemet reprint ended up being the 1.5 rules, but another opportunity to soak people for money on minor visual upgrades. With Cyclades, it doesn't even look like tha's the case here, as it looks like a downgrade.
BTW, the makers of Inis called and they want their map look back.
I agree regarding the art direction. The Legendary edition art has too much of a modern, super-heroes vibe to it (color palatte, character look). The game is set during an ancient, mythical struggle for control. The art needs to reflect that old, mysterious, mystical, lost-in-time feeling with characters that invoke the strength and grandeur of the gods/goddesses. I don't get that feeling with this art. Feels almost "disney-esque".
Everyone’s different I like the way it looks and to me it sure looks like an upgraded version of the game 🤷🏻♂️ and that’s before we see the miniatures

@@michaeljoesph8687 Yes, it's definitely a subjective opinion and I don't doubt that there will be many people that will say they like the new art better. In my case, since the original game exists and I'm not pulled in by the look of this one, it's less likely I'll jump in on it.
