I didn't own any Feld games.
I haven't played more than one or two of them.
    Castles of Burgundy.
Can it really, I mean REALLY live up to the hype?
    I didn't know if I'd like it.
I didn't think it would to be honest.
Well...let's talk. I eat crow and is this the version you should actually consider if you're like me?
    Thanks for watching!

Could not agree more. It was an instant top 5 game from the moment I played it. Other than the building and knowledge tile powers, it’s all super intuitive.

It's truly a beautiful thing. I couldn't do the 3D tiles since they're way too fiddly but they're very nice too

It's crazy that you post this now.
I have never played a Feld game either, and yesterday friends brought this Super Deluxe Special Plastic Edition of CoB to gamenight - and I loved it. My wife loved it even more. Contemplating getting the original cardboard version now... Anyway - I will watch the rest 8min 59 now =D

Glad you liked it. It's a great game, and makes sense as to why these kind of deluxe re-makes of classics do so well on crowd funding.

We just play the our first game last night with all of the terrain tiles included and it was no problem at all. We set up the player boards on the top and bottom of the board, grabbed the terrain tile holders, put one on each side of the board and we were off and running. When you place a hex into your estate you just discard the hex and grab the corresponding building. It was very seamless in my opinion. Where it did add a small amount of time was repacking the pieces back into the terrain holder. We were all pretty shocked at how easy it was to do that at one point we kind of looked around at each other and unanimously agreed that it’s hard to imagine playing without these chunky pieces going forward which was very surprising because we were all thinking it would drag the game down. And in the end I was taking pictures and sending it to my mom lol I! As you stated about the geese and the white buildings expansions, I also would suggest adding the inns as well as they also enhance gameplay without a bunch of rules overhead. They simply sit in the center by the black tiles and you can purchase them for two coins. They have no special ability but they can be placed anywhere and they just increase the size of whatever area they are placed in. this comes in very handy late game when the round scoring bonus goes down and you need that extra little boost in points or you can’t find that specific tile to complete that specific zone.

My wife bought the first version several years ago. We have played it (nearly) to death, and I have bought 6 or 7 expansions since. We are never going to sell or trade it away. My wife has it on her top 2 list and I have it on my top 10 list of all time. Since I have 500+ games it's a testament to Stefan Feld's genius that it ranks so high, and I started out as a war gamer. ^^

I am so glad I got this deluxe version of the game, absolutely love it. Did not get the 3D tiles though because they are a bit too clunky for the game in my opinion

I went all in and I don't regret it! Well worth the money in my opinion. It takes a few extra seconds to swap out a tile for the 3D terrain, but your board looks awesome as it grows.

Glad you got to play this version so I can ask: How do you feel about the acrylic tiles over the cardboard?
I love the art and color vibrancy of the cardboard. The acrylic seemed muted and washed out which made it less appealing visually.

I have and like it as well. I would call it a flawless mid complexity Euro. Depth of thinking, extremely steamlined and speedy to play. Its not beating down my top 10 but I would say this game is a very safe game for any Euro player to purchase. I wouldn't expect many to rate this game less then a 7.5 on BGG.

@@Flip5ide the vast majority of games that involve acquiring a card that gives you some power/bonus have texts on the card that tells you what the power/bonus is. Castles of Burgundy uses tiles and so there isn’t enough room for text. If you are a new player it is really hard.

They have reference cards that explain all of the different powers and abilities and special scoring.
My girl and I use a shiny penny on the reference card to denote which Monastery powers we have active.

You can get the new CoB Special Edition also excluding the miniatures. Ie you get the amazing new design with larger hexes, double layer player boards and most of the other new components at a much lower price tag. Miniatures and acrylic tiles are just add-ons. So really not worth getting any of the previous editions of CoB any more.

Nonsense. The two previous editions put CoB in the top 20 games, so it’s obvious any edition is great. The 2019 edition, with the expansions, is excellent value.
The game’s the thing, and you play it with what you can afford, or what is to hand, like prisoners who made chess sets out of scrap.

I think that the construction in the earlier versions basically takes a similar amount of time, as the number of game elements does not differ.
Plus shuffling/sorting the tiles (here they are automatically sorted and shuffled in the bags).
Plus here the things are stored in a functional inlay that has a small compartment to put it directly on the table as a stock.

  • @krahnjp

I didn't get the upgraded terrain, and I don't regret it. Having to draw the tiles, then find the terrain mini that matches that tile, and replace one with the other would just slow things down. But since you don't have to draw castles, you can just take the red tiles out of the game completely and only use the castles. A little more setup time, but no slowdown to actual gameplay, in my games at least, and worth the special feeling. (although if you don't have the castles you wouldn't miss them that much either)
Also, I DO transport my copy to game night at my friends house, But I'm a bit of a masochist too, I think.

If Awaken Realms did gave you the game, you would not buy it. Most probably you would have not covered it.
What you need to say is that with the amount of stuff that they gave you, you could have bought 4-5 premium boardgames and have different experience, heck you would have bought the 20th anniversary and 4 other games for that price.
You went down the hype road, do you go the Quackalope road now?

Did you even watch this video? You reek of jealousy with your ignorance and idiocy. He says the very things you're accusing him of not saying. And to throw the Quackmail shade onto one of the straightest shooters in the hobby is egregiously inaccurate. Liege is a lot of things, but a sell-out carnival barker like Quack, is not one of them.
