    I always find the best fish and chip shops are in the middle of rough housing estates. They haven't had a refurb since the nineties and have got dodgy neon lights in the windows. More attention to the quality of the food than trying to wow people with having modern decor.

    We have these two restaurants in the Richmond, VA area called Latitude Seafood,and they have INCREDIBLE fish n chips, the fish is not frozen & refried, the chips are the same, they actually use curly chips, and they scratch make their tartar sauce (bear in mind that in the US most places serve crisps (chips in the US) as opposed to chips (fries in the US), Latitude serves bonafide UK definition chips.

    Oh yes.... chish fips with a sea view... nothing better in the world!!😁 ⛱ 🍦🌊 That batter did look the very best!😋 I'm craving fish and chips now but I've got no fish in the freezer!! ☹️ When I was a kid in the 70's there was a fish and chip van that arrived ringing an old school bell at 10.45pm at night... parked right outside the pub in our village high street. We lived just a few doors away from the pub. If my Dad was in the pub on a Thursday night, he'd arrive home with fish and chips and my brother and I would be allowed out of bed to join our Mum and Dad in a late night shared feast... I can still taste the crinkle cut chips now! The owners of the mobile fish shop finished frying the chips in butter, they were really amazing! I still cook chips in butter today (not in a deep fryer) tedious cooking, but wow, they have the best taste and crispy texture.

    The largest used to be in Guiseley near where i used to live and i visited for both sit down and take away many times. Harry's fish and chips were great, it was always busy in the 70's and 80's, but they let i get run down and the decor got very tired, not sure why as it used to be booming. they eventually sold out to the Wetherby Whaler in 2012. i havent been since then but the whaler in pudsey has some of the tastiest F&C around west yorkshire, which is praise indeed in our part of the gods own acre i can tell ya !! im planning to go to dorset sometime after covid dies down so will check this restaurant out if im nearby for sure.

    Nothing wrong with those peas. 😉That's how we have mushy peas in Yorkshire. And yes, the traditional way of cooking the chips is twice fried. In lard. 👍
    ( uncle had a chip shop for over 20 years 😬)

    • @WalkWithMeTim
      @WalkWithMeTim  3 года назад

      Yes but I think they are old chips

    • @frogandspanner
      @frogandspanner 3 года назад

      Beef dripping, not lard - and that's the way it was at the original Guiseley Harry Ramsdens, which was a stopping off point as a lad after a walk in the dales with my aunt and uncle. My maternal grandfather had a fish and chip shop at one point in his life, and made the best fish and chips I have ever experienced. On special days he would triple cook the chips, and cool them down between fryings.
      Harry Ramsdens went downhill when they expanded and had to accommodate to poncey southern tastes by boiling in oil.

    • @Paul_Templer
      @Paul_Templer 3 года назад

      @@frogandspanner sorry yes you're right, beef dripping is traditionally used.

    • @munnjean
      @munnjean 2 года назад +1

      @@frogandspanner Absolutely right on ,, there is nothing quite like good old fashioned fish and chips cooked in beef dripping. It just blows my mind when I see these sanctimonious chefs on You-Tube preparing the " best " fish and chips.
      Utter rubbish, triple cooked chips, batter made with eggs, soda syphons, vodka etc. etc. I've prepared more orders of fish and chips ( professionally ) than I care to remember ,,, is there a secret ? no, not really.
      The single most important factor is temperature, sifted all purpose flour ice cold, plain water, ice cold. Make your batter have your chips ready and have them as dry as possible.
      The fat ( lard, oil, beef dripping ) set at 325 f. ,, cook the chips until slightly soft, remove from fat. Increase temperature to 365 f. dust the fish lightly with flour dip fillets into batter and fry until golden. Remove the fish ,, make sure the temperature is steady at 365 f. and cook your fries until golden and serve.
      That's it ,, that's exactly how thousands of British fish and chip shops made their product for hundreds of years. They didn't boil the chips in filtered water first, the didn't need eggs, vodka and soda syphons for their batter.

    Harry Ramsdens started out in a shed in Guiseley in Yorkshire, they then opened a big restaurant with crystal chandeliers. They sold it and it is now called the Wetherby Whaler they do brilliant fish and chips better than Harry Ramsdens

    Sadly, the more franchised that Harry Ramsden's became I think the quality of the food suffered - I think the business literally got too big for itself and they even had outlets in Kuala Lumpur! Even his flag ship, original restaurant in Guiseley, Leeds has since become a Wetherby Whaler! They used to queue for hours to get in back in the 1990s and coaches arrived from miles around. Unfortunately, I would not consider HR to up there as the best anymore. Very sad, as they were amongst the best. Lots of very good independent fish restaurants around though 🙂

      I couldn’t agree more! I have commented on the Harry’s at Blackpool, elsewhere in this post!ABSOLUTELY 💩!!!
      In fact seagull 💩would probably have been nicer! And at £28.00, (cheaper too,) not forgetting one of which was the over 60’s meal deal, a real ripoff!

      @@danielledewitt1 which one? I went to Blackpool and it was absolute 💩!
      I wanted the Seniors meal, it came up with 10 chips and the fish was thin and a good inch from the batter! My son’s meal left a lot to be desired… I have been to HR several times in previous years and it was great! It now appears to have been taken over by the Merlin Group. Absolutely disgusting, the booths were filthy. I vowed never ever again. It’s cheaper to travel, by tram to Cleveleys and have it from the chippy opposite the Royal British Legion. Fantastic and they also, when asked, give you the batter that has come off the fish - yummy with salt and vinegar! Cheaper too!

      Ramsden's had a great marketing team back in the day with plenty of press coverage.
      Sadly being successful made them lazy or complacent and it all went south.
      You can even buy it in Iceland frozen food shops and it is as bland and boring as
      any other brand. You're paying for a name not a quality product.

    This gaff is an absolute parody of the Harry Ramsden's ethos. About 5 years ago we went in as they opened up at lunchtime
    and got 3 portions of the most disgusting chewy cardboard chips. A friend who was with us who is a chef said they were last nights unsold that had been reheated in the fat for lunchtime service. I took them back in to complain and got told "it is what it is mate you order chips we serve chips"...I just left them on the counter and walked out. Funnily enough behind me I heard a few other people getting up to register their displeasure.
    Used to live there and go there from the NE of England regularly and avoid this Harry Ramsdens like the plague. Its just doing it by numbers and there are so many better options there too.

      I remember the original Harry ramsdens at Guiseley , in the 80’s. The family sold the company and it went downhill, now it’s just a name with expensive Fish and chips that look to be from a freezer..
