The whole film is autobiographical for George. The only character he has said he couldn't relate to is Steve. He did have friends that were like him though.
Love how after the crash and after all their goading throughout the movie, Jon actually checks on Bob Falfa and helps him away from the burning car as he does actually have some mutual respect for him as a fellow racer. Jon’s seen them all come and go.
Fast and Furious glorified dangerous street racing, American Graffitti didn't. In fact the moral was 60's street cruisin was balls out fun but street racing was dangerous and stupid.
