  • Welcome to my first video on the new project, CAESARS GALLIC WARS. ‪@warlordgames‬ have kindly sent me the Gallic Wars starter set to take a look at along with some extra units to add in all with the aim of getting to some battle reports as fast as possible, so this is a spped painting project.
    In this video i take a look at the models, plan the first part of the project and test out the colour schemes and the methods which i will use for the rest of the project.
    The plan will be to have more project updates as well as painting videos all leading up to the battle reports.

    I’ll be honest, I barely comment on any videos but this has to be one of the most brilliant unboxings/reviews I’ve seen. I get to see the product and how it looks painted by someone better than decent, and not the studio pictures which never sell me on anything, I’ve been holding on not spending buy I might pick up one of the two forces myself even tho if it’s only just to paint, this looks insanely fun to paint. I wish to see more of your tutorials and videos like this, I often don’t have time to watch battle reports but I’ll check yours around this game

      Thanks for taking the time to comment 👍 I really appreciate that, thank you. I decided that if I do unboxings it should be more than just a look at piles of grey plastic and I hope people like that. I have more updates planned and then I'll do a painting video on the Gauls and the Romans all leading to some battle reports 🙂

    Ahh. contrary to the EI Romans from WLG, the Caesarean's fit quite well with the Victrix late republic. So switching heads and Pilums work quite well

    • @MrGunnar177
      @MrGunnar177 7 месяцев назад +1

      I was wondering about that

    • @stefan-georgfuchs9618
      @stefan-georgfuchs9618 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@MrGunnar177 yes works well. For some reason, the WLG EIR are somewhat smaller then their late republic ancestors ( kind of true scale as the romans happen to be smaller guys ) . Funny enough, at least half of Casars forst 6 legions were raised in Spain ( Cordoba ). 2 by Pompey, the famous 10th. by Caesar himself when he was Pro-Konsul there. Victrix miniatures are in general a bit larger than most others, but proportions are OK. So switching heads between these and WLG Caesareans was no problem. There is, however, an issue with the shields : WLG Caesarean transfers ( actually only the lightnings) can be used for Victrix as well, but the LBM Decals for Victrix do not fit to WLG shields so easily. Main Problem areas are the edges and the shield bosses.

    Great video Martin,
    My own Gauls were built for battle against the early Republican Roman legion that my friend has.
    We both bought the Victrix Roman legionaries at a 1:10 ratio, so one Maniple is two bases each of 6 figures, 12 figures in total (120 men actual).
    To match that with Gauls, I now have 24 warbands each of 6 bases, 24 to 30 figures each warband.
    Playing on a 12 to 16ft table at our club really allows for some great games.

    Excellent video, very inspiring. Glad to see Warlord sent you these, not surprised though, you have to be the top content creator for the Warlord stable of ancients games, at least in 28mm. Not only do you produce a lot of content, your videos are also very high quality, well edited and very focussed.
    I've always had a love / hate relationship with the Romans. I really like the Imperial Roman figures (complete with totally ahistorical but cool Ridley Scott Praetorians in dark blue with black shields), I've just never been keen on their enemies, model wise, same with Caesar's legions to a degree. Early Republican have the most interesting range of enemies for me, Seleucid, Carthaginian etc and the Romans look NEARLY as good. I'd bet on the next Epic release being early Republican too, as the enemies I mentioned have a fighting / formation style that would suit the Epic strips better than Gallic Warbands IMO, which would look far too regimented and orderly in the usual 10 man strips. I really do wish Warlord would do the Epic stuff in 30mm strips though, it would make them far more flexible.
    That Gallic Wars book though looks excellent. I really hope they do a WOTR supplement of that standard in the near future.

      I'm really pleased to be working with Warlord on the Gallic Wars, it’s a project i have wanted to work on for a while and it’s a good opportunity to showcase HC a little more. I would put money on the Punic Wars for an Epic release if just because tiny elephants would be great fun :)

    Nice unboxing video, probably the best I've ever seen, having the results of assembling & painting the figures is probably the key. I've never been strongly drawn towards "Ancients", probably because of early experience at my club where a campaign of all the various nations & armies of the period saw the Romans beating all comers decisively. Plus the fact that cavalry was such a tertiary factor in the combat of the times. I mean, NO STIRRUPS, what else could you expect? You've done a terrific job with the Romans, especially the the arrangement of figures & the look of the shields, I like a lot of variation/ animation in all my units. regardless of the era. The Celts however are spectacular. What a joy they must've been to paint all that variation and TATOOS ! ! Hugs.

It looks full and it fulfills some idea (admittedly taken from an alternate-history fiction novel) of how the Gaul's fighting style meant that, once the two lines met, the Gauls were always outnumbered because they needed room to swing their swords while the Romans were shoulder-to-shoulder.

    Excellent stuff. Very tempted to join you in this project - but I'm just waiting to see whether Romans will be the next WG Epic release or not - that seems to have been the rumour coming from their Open Day earlier this year. However, I've heard other ideas since then.
    Always been a big fan of the Romans though, ever since I worked as an archaeologist for the British School at Rome way back in 1990 - spookily just after the Italia '90 World Cup. Definitely somewhere I'd recommend working with if you ever get the chance. 🙂

    If you want to add Gaul's with more variation , look at the Victrix range , they blend in with the warlord really well, come in huge packs and size wise are perfect , I have used lots of them in my barbarian army, not so the Romans though , they don't blend in at all, they appear too big , I brought a single sprue from 2nd city games , to start with just to compare size , I was really impressed I have 17 warbands of 32 figures each , plus cavalry#

    I’m slightly sad I wasn’t fast enough to convince you to individually base these guys as I would loved to see some SPQR (or my preferred semi-skirmish game) Infamy! infamy! by Too Fat Lardies.
    As for Pulio and Verenus, i wouldn’t put them in a unit but keep them as individuals and have them either on Ceasar or Anthony command base or more fun keep them as individual markers representing their command re-rolls (removing one representing them sending one of their “god blessed” men into the field to fix something)

    I've been building these armies on and off for several years now. I'm interested to see what you do with them. My Gauls are too crowded on their bases; like you say they just disappear if you base them at the same density as the Romans. I might have to rebase to something more like what you've done - I can get a few more units out of them that way too.
    In our games we find the Gauls have a hard time winning, although every once in a while things work out for them and the Romans get absolutely slaughtered. Gauls are an all or nothing army.
    I'm eager to see some game videos.

      Thanks very much 😁, glad you enjoyed it. I checked beforehand, the pugio is on the other side, on the figures left as standard for Romans. It's just easier to produce figures with them in scabbard as means they can use the same body for both the Gladius box and the Pilum box 👍

    Great, I am in the midst of building a late republic and a Celts(Gauls, germans, Belgae etc ) army. Each 3 Divisions 480 pts. For both, I use a mix ( 50/50 ) auf WLG Caesarean's / Gauls and Victrix Late republic , Gallic and germanic warriors as well as cavalry.

      @@7thson726 But it works only with Late Republic from WLG. What also works are the Celts. Victrix / WLG fit well. Nevertheless, I don't mix them ( Celts) in a unit but put units from Victrix and WLG in a Division. Only Problem is with cavalry. The proportilns of the gallic cavalry of Victrix is clearly more "muscular" and the horses are horses while the celts Horses of WLG are rather ponies...which would be historically correct though...🤔

      @@7thson726 You're welcome. Just finished assembly of two units Victrix Roman Cavalry. 1 Republican and one Early Empire. Since both were mainly Auxilia ( Gallic, Iberian, Numidian and Germans ) I built the republican with some leftover gallic helmets and plumes and mixed heads, cuirass and plumes of the republican cav with the early empire auxilia. This represents also the progressivly changing state of equipment of roman troops at the end of the republican ( Marian/Caesarean ) period to the imperial army under Octavian ( Augustus ). Like in modern armies, introduction of new equipment was phased of quite some time and some of the late repbulic armour and weaponry was still in use even by 200 a.D. So this period is quite interesting to the modeller in uns..hihi
