28mm Dark Ages Painting Project - Episode 1

- I'm really excited about sharing more of what I've been doing (and what I will be doing!) with everyone here on RUclips. It's been a big part of my hobby and I'm really missing the interaction.
In this video, Episode 1 of my Dark Ages project I have a look at the 'Saxon' army I've started painting. It will quite a large army once it's all done and dusted with very simple paint jobs, but it should look great on the table once it's all done.
These 28mm dark age miniatures from Crusader Miniatures were a joy to paint. It was a very easy and pleasant experience, if I can sort out the spears I have no doubts I can knock out hundreds of them pretty quickly.

I know this is a bit late, but check out brass rod. It’s usually used for pinning, but it is the right size and can absolutely be shaped with a little work. Also extremely sturdy.
Footsore sells 100mm spears in packs of 20. If you've got any local hobby stores I'd definitely try and get some of the brass rods used for pinning figures and models. 0.5mm brass rod is fairly easy to get a hold of from hobby suppliers.
I'm really not keen on those thin spears, but then again I've never used them. I have quite a few packs of them so perhaps I should try them? They just look so different from the spears that come molded onto figures.
@@RubbishInRubbishOut I find the spear tip lacks detail, but once they're painted up they look fine from across the table. I considered using some super thin Tamiya masking tape to add some detail but gave up when I realized that was a lifetime's amount of work to do.
Hehe, yeah. I'm not the most patient person, I just need something quick and easy. Even though thought of making my own spears is daunting and no doubt will cause delays to the project!
@@RubbishInRubbishOut I have friends who had good luck using plastic bristles from cheap kitchen brooms. Thickness is in between the metal and cast spears plus they have the benefit of being bendy if an accident happens.
RubbishInRubbishOut yeah. As much as I like scratch building stuff (so many ideas for cool terrain, no cool terrain) I also like having finished projects I can use.
Still remember watching my first tau terrain video which got me back into it again on this channel all those years back
I never finished the Tau terrain set I was working on all those years ago. I gave it to a local club and they finished it off beautifully!

I really miss doing terrain videos. When I was doing all my videos on terrain, I was single and lived above my shop so it was very to just walk down stairs at 3am and make stuff. Life is a bit different now and it's not so easy. If I can get some more kit for the studio and get into the habit of filming during the day, I'd love to do more terrain work
Gripping Beast make separate lead spear packs. They are thick and reliable. I am really glad you are making vids again Viv. It’s such a great bunch of blokes on here. You need to get into some of the paint and chats on Discord with VK, Brit Legion and the boys. I am really enjoying it.
I had a look at the GB lead spears, they have a bunch of other conversion weapons available too. Certainly warrants a closer look, I wonder if I can get them from W&P here in Australia. Might need to buy some once the virus is passed and international mail is running properly.
So great to see you back making videos, and Dark Ages too! :-) Spears - (I didn't check to see if this has already been suggested), grab an industrial type yard or workshop broom/brush - the ones with thick tough bristles. Cut bunch of bristles off, trim to size & squish ends in vice or pliers, trim to a point with Xacto blade if needed. With regards to funny Dark Age hats, pretty realistic seeing conical woollen or leather caps & "Phrygian" style hats across the board.
I'm going to have to look up the "Phrygian" hats, are the little ones I was mentioning about being worn by the Normans? The bristles could be a good idea, I'll poke around in the garden shed and see if the outdoor broom has thick enough bristles!

Awesome! Viv is back. Lovely dark age figs. Most different 'factions' would have looked fairly similar at most points I think so mix and matching is fine. For spears I saw a video once about plastic broom bristles. Hope the motivation stays I really enjoy your videos even remember the old just put the camera on builds.
Plastic broom bristles sounds interesting! Maybe heating up the end a little to soften the plastic and then flattening it between some pliers might make a good spear heaad?

I don't know enough history of the time to know the difference between Saxons and the rest. I like the idea of "Dark Age Force" that can sort of work for a bunch, with certain units unique to factions for when you need them.
I'm lucky that my gaming group and friends are all pretty relaxed people that just enjoy pushing man-dollies around the table and aren't too fussed about 'historical accuracy'. I'm happy to run them as a generic 'dark ages army' that can take the place of Vikings in this game, and Saxons in the next.

For spears you can use rough booth's plastic brushes 😁 One booth makes a hole sprear wall!
General difference with saxons and Vikings would be more subtle. Cloth colors that would be popular for Vikings would not necessarily be as popular for saxons. Another would be shield designs. Saxons often favored one background color shields with simple designs like stripes and crosses painted on it. Vikings opted often for a variety of colors for their shields with curved lines dividing the shield into quarters and halves with those divisions in different colors like red, white, black and yellow being the favorited colors. I do agree on best to hand paint your own shields for saxons and Vikings....it’s cheaper and can be done as well as using transfers as the designs are not difficult to do as compared to Celtic shields for example.
The best wire I found for making spears is paper clips.
Do you flatten out the end some how to make a spear head?
Second that, jumbo clips, from the two dollar store, if you can't get 'em for nothing.You can flatten the end with pliers, takes a bit of grunt, better to flatten with a hammer. You can use a rock though or any heavy object. Then file to a point, nail files, emery boards, needle files, even bastard files work with care. Or just rub up and down on concrete. Glad you're back, ray of light when I was stuck in Palmerston North years ago.
Man, I'm just starting with SAGA and your initial videos describing the mechanic are simply put amazing. So much clarity and good examples - better than all the stuff that gets produced by companies selling their own stuff. Great that you feel the vibe again and want to get back to creating videos. It might be a random single voice on the internet but I feel we miss that positive feedback towards people we appreciate - they (in this case you) need to feel the support. So thanks for doing what you're doing, hope you'll have fun doing it and looking forward to more painting/discussions/batreps or whatever you have coming. Cheers from Poland! :)

Victrix make some beautiful figures! I'm just not a fan of plastic. I don't have the patience to glue things together! Hehe, I've had metal figures sitting around for years because I had to glue a single arm on and just couldn't be bothered! :)

Good to see you back. I started modelling few years ago. On the recommendation of other youtubers, I subscribed to your channel enjoying many of your earlier videos.
You mentioned finding a metal to make spears. Could you use solder? It’s soft and easy to mould, but not sure how durable in war gaming it might be, but for static model I’m sure it would work well.
Well I must thank those other RUclipsrs ... and of course you for watching! I think solder might be a little too soft, the paint would chip off every time I needed to straighten the spears :(

Thanks mate ... I must get back to this project. I haven't painted any more for AGES. I need to sort out the spears (I can't find a brush with any bristles I like) as it's really thrown a spanner in this project.

I wouldn't be too worried about axes in your Anglo-Saxon armies. As England had been conquered by Cnut in 1014, technically these armies were Anglo-Danes at this time. And the Daneaxe had been popular amongst the English nobility and Housecarls prior to this anyway.
I have recently returned to my Dark Age collection and started adding Irish Warriors, which are the easiest (also read boring) figures to paint.

Thanks for the details, I had a look at the FF plastic spears last night ... they look like the easiest solution to me. Thicker than the thin metals once, but unfortunately out of stock at my usual places. Good luck with the Irish!
I dont have a solution for the spear head, but I use 2" diaper pins that i have cut up.
Good to see you back making videos. Very nice figures. Gripping Beast might be worth a look. They sell separate lead spears that are much chunkier. 👍

@@RubbishInRubbishOut Fireforge also sell packs of separate spears though they are plastic. Northstar sells them, search for "dv 005 plastic spears 5cm" and they pop right up. I'm not a fan of metal spears, the machined ones are dangerously sharp tipped and the lead/pewter ones are chunky, soft, and bend too easily.

Why not visit your local hobby model store and pick up some brass wire? They have these in different sizes and are not that expensive. Paperclips are also a great solution but hard to straighten out.
Not big on historical games myself, though the Dark Ages stuff has been tempting me for years.
I was thinking about using some brass wire, but I've not used it before and don't know how hard it will be to squish into a spearhead
@@RubbishInRubbishOut Fairly easy to do with a pair of pliers. Brass is softer than steel.
Can you vise the wire, or maybe just hammer it then clean it up with a file/sandpaper?
Possibly, need to duck next door to me neighbour and give it a try on his anvil!
I wouldn't sweat the off piece of "inappropriate" gear on Dark Ages figures. There was so much cross-pollinating of cultures, battlefield looting, and overall chaos that the concept of uniformity was not really a thing. Fight/paint on!
A friend was showing me a picture of one of their Vikings vs Saxon big battle games and I couldn't tell the difference - aside from some obvious Viking Berserkers. They said they also use the armies for either side when they need to bulk out the forces. I'm looking forward to just cracking on and after years of wanting, finally have a big army to be proud of
