much as I love Jet Li sounds like I’ll skip this - just purchased Last Hero in China on a blind buy hope it is easier to follow!

Hey man, really enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this. From my experience of Hong Kong cinema, trying to adapt any work of Chinese literature is fraught with problems, the books are far to sprawling to fit into a 90 minute film, or even series of movies.
Shaw brothers director Chor Yuen made 4 films based on this one book (Heaven sword and dragon sabre 1 and 2, Web of death and Hidden power of the dragon sabre) all of them are hugely confusing, and you could watch one a couple of them and have no clue they were connected. in fact the first Heaven sword film starts off with around 7 minutes of the story so far. Characters with unfamiliar names are flashed up on screen and first time I saw, I landed up pishing myself laughing.
Chang Cheh adapted Jin Yong Legend of the Condor heroes as The Brave Archer series and again trying to follow it as a westerner with no really knowledge of the source material is hard work, especially when you know that other adaptions made for TV have over 50 episodes.
I am not telling you how to watch this type of film, but the day I stopped trying to follow all the plot threads and just started focusing on how brilliant and fantastical it looked, my quality of life greatly improved. This might seem like the easy way out, but honestly man it works wonders for me. Loving your work mister!

I love this movie! I have a vhs tracking tape of this known as Lord of the Wu Tang because it’s f the RZA’s love for these films. Just like you said, I grew up knowing this from that terrible quality and now I’m super happy this has the restoration it does here! That vhs is one of the worst qualities for any of these old movies. Great review!

That's great to hear, I had a feeling this probably would've been seen on VHS in dogshit quality haha. Must be nice to see it in a whole new way.

I honestly thought I dreamed this movie up, I've literally never seen anyone talk about it before, but my local vhs rental place had a copy when I was a kid and I loved it!
I didn't know anything about china or Wuxia stories, and I was like 14, so I understood basically nothing, but it's a fun movie!

Holy shit! I saw this movie on TV when I was a kid. Didn't knew what it was called, but tried to find it ever since. Thank you! Thank you very much!
