Its crazy to think, all they had to do was to make the visual clear on 4k format and could have taken their time with it looking scene by scene. But they took unnecessary steps by using ai to make restoration and wasted more money on what they didn’t have to use.
Have you seen the advertised 4K version that’s in theaters? I’m going in two weeks, one night show. I also went back in 2014 for the 30th anniversary, which was the awesome 2013 remaster.
@@RazorwireReviewsyeah so I saw it in theaters, and as someone else said in the comments, it wasn’t bad. I honestly couldn’t tell much difference from the 2013 BD.
I would pass on the 4K tbh... It's not even from a 4K scan (it is a 2K upscale). I know someone who saw it theatrically and he said the AI DNR mistakes smoke and other things for film grain and smooths them out. Some shots look really bad, but overall it's decent; kind of like how Abyss was. I see there is no original mono audio track on it which is downright unforgivable imo. They can do it, they just don't care. That and the color looks similar to the 2013 Blu-ray release where it's extremely cyan-biased. It's a waste of time to buy the movie again imo.
Actually the JAWS 3-D example is WORSE than you think. It doesn't just have telltale signs of AI upscale- It has the telltale signs of 1080p to 4K upscaling! In other words- Instead of doing a new 4K scan of the negative, they simply upscaled the previous 2K Blu ray transfer. Which I can do at home with Topaz AI. That stillframe looks EXACTLY like garbled 1080p to 4K upscaling.
This is also what happened with Aliens, at the very least, and has been pretty definitively proven, unfortunately. They didn't even bother with a rescan, just used the existing 2K master. Seems so pointless when you have such a high quality format like film to work with.
To me it looks as if they are actually using Topaz VEAI...it looks no better than results one easily can get with that. Happy with Titanic 4K for the most part tho, but not gonna spend a lot of money on buying any more of those Ai *REMASTERS* , especially those upscaled from 2K masters. I am not against remastering at all myself, but it has to be done properly. Most shot on film releases from the US these days are remasters to some degree.
The Blu-ray has the 5.1 audio track which has remixed audio with new sound effects. So even the Blu-ray isn't the authentic experience. If you want the authentic experience then you'll need the MGM Special Edition DVD which has the original mono mix.

I don't understand this obsession of Cameron to clean all the grain from his films, it results in a very processed and digital image, very plastic texture, it's like watching a rescaled music video clips from the 80s, 90s of the fake remastered ones on RUclips. I prefer to stick with the old Terminator Blu Ray, that looks great. And about True Lies, I prefer to stay with the Spanish bootleg Blu Ray, it's not perfect, better than the dvd by far yes, but that bootleg Blu Ray keeps the movie as we saw it in the year of release, without changing the color palette and with some grain at least. And with Terminator 2 I'm still sticking with the 2015 Lionsgate edition, the most acceptable of all the ones out there, it preserves the grain but the downside is that it looks a little soft in contrast and color.

I saw it in the Prince Charles cinema Central London...i was also let down by the French connection bluray as the director changed the grading slightly instead of keeping the transfer as-is. They are soon screening 2001 from a 70mm (premiere / distribution/red carpet) print at the Prince Charles cinema, so seeing a classic with maximum dynamic range and colours and resolution from a 70mm film print, i have to see that😮. When I was an encoder in soho London, some clients asked to do naughty encoding like capture and upscale a standard def master tape to 720p, we obviously refused as it looked like crap, but now days it wouldn't surprise me if these 4k remaster are from a crispy HD master and just simply ai up scaled from that instead of rescanning from the 35mm or 70mm film master. I did see some guy on RUclips complaining that his 4k disc was softer than the HD bluray... Im sure THAT was a HD up scale to 4k with a bit of sharpening and noise reduction🤨 I know.... This pisses me off. The Terminator is a very special film for me. Quite possibly my favorite and almost certainly my most-watched film of all time. I've had my struggles with modern home releases of it as-is, since I'm someone that grew up with the original mono sound mix. That soundscape is burned into my brain such that all the other sound mixes that I've heard only take me out of the film and there are surprisingly few releases that offer the original sound. I hope against hope that this 4K release actually respects the original film and actually "restores" and "preserves" it in its original form...but I'm honestly not holding my breath, given what we know about the people behind it. It all just makes me sad and angry.
There's simply no way that the 4K release will preserve much, as both Cameron and Park Road Post seem to be pretty intent on modernising any remaster they work on. They cater to the "wow! it looks like it was shot yesterday!" crowd who seem to enjoy these things. It seems the soundtrack is a BIG deal to a lot of fans too, and I can't lie and say I've ever noticed, even though I grew up on the VHS version in the early 90s, but it's just another indication of how much Cameron likes to punch up and redo his films in many different ways. Definitely sad.
The 4K Aliens transfer has a lot of weird fake details that make the faces too smooth or too sharp. Some faces from a distance just looks wrong and when the actors are turning their heads, it doesn't look right sometimes. They shouldn't have used A.I for the enchantment and should just retain the grain. The only positive I can say is it's nowhere near as bad as the True Lies and Jaws 4K.
Cameron hates grain, stop moaning and get over it. At the end of the day, they’re Cameron’s films and he has the right to do whatever he wants. Ok T2 was a mishap, but the other movies are just fine. If you hate all Cameron restoration’s then don’t bother buying it, simple.
I don't think it's cheaper and easier. Like you said, the blu-ray version of Terminator is already amazing and from a 4k scan. So the only thing missing from that is HDR, the whole process of DNR and AI bullshit is an addition which will take more time and cost more money.
The Aliens and True Lies 4K releases at the very least were not scanned in 4K and were just upscaled from existing masters. So in those cases it definitely was a cheap cop out.
@@RazorwireReviews Hm, but there are 4k releases that are upscales from 2k masters like the Guardians of the Galaxy movies or Mad Max: Fury Road and they look fine, if not stunning. But maybe that's just me being dumbstruck as to why someone would spend money to essentially ruin movies with AI.
To my knowledge, they're upscaled using much less invasive tools than AI, and really you're just getting a slightly better encoding than the 1080p disc, depending on how much effort they put into that. The modern films that were only finished in 2K are an interesting one, whereas films that were finished on 35mm film, there's no excuse because that superior quality is right there for the taking, if you do it properly.
I just got back from the theater seeing the terminator 4k release, and it was awful in any of the Schwarzenegger scenes. It's like every new rendition of this movie, his scenes look really bad. Even the endoskeleton scenes were horrible. Everything else looks great, but those are really bad.

Everyone thinks it’s the best, until the next “best” comes along. Films should be presented as is, not artificially messed with until actors’ faces look like clay. I don’t want my 80s classics digitised up so they look like modern digital junk. They’ve been messing with The Terminator especially for too long. 4K is held aloft with too much reverence.
@michaelmyers3709 4K is the best possible format to present film as is. Any higher resolution would likely be pointless but 4K can replicate the integrity of image and quality of 35mm better than blu-ray. AI upscaling is a "restoration" method, and not a symptom of 4K, but a terrible abuse of it.
It’s why I purchased Band of Brothers from Japan, from a label that didn’t mess with the original film. WB did a ridiculous DNR treatment effectively removing parts of scenes to its detriment. I’ll not buy BD or 4K movies that have been shown to be “cleaned up” and make it less than originally intended. 35mm film has the best amount of information to properly restore a movie, just know who the culprits are in this AI/resto business today, it’s a damn shame. Film is meant to have grain, don’t screw up classic movies with your DNR BS. Less is More !!

I don't know how anyone could look at examples I even put in this video, like Vasquez's face morphing in and out of shape, and think it looks great. For me the core principle that the entire image is enhanced and covered by fake digital detail on top of the film is just wrong.
"News" News. Again, show me where I "say it's bad." You can't, because I didn't. You're right, it is a game and it's entirely of your playing. I saw this new restoration in theater - thought it looked quite good.

It really isn't haha. Creepy AI eyes all over the shop. It's exactly as I knew it would be.
wrong, you're really impressive with garbage AI? 😂🤣
Yeah, that's the version that will be on disc.
@@RazorwireReviewsyeah so I saw it in theaters, and as someone else said in the comments, it wasn’t bad. I honestly couldn’t tell much difference from the 2013 BD.
Which boutique label is using AI upscaling?
Imprint has done it a fair bit, I don't know if they still do though.
@@RazorwireReviews Hey, what happened to your QA video? :)
The DVD mono version, VHS is the only best way of seeing the film, that 4k version can go to hell.
I'll stick to my Laserdisc, the first one, with all the dirt and scratches and of course, the mono soundtrack.
@@rolandpater2245 Yep with the 35mm print.
Not a huge Cameron fan except for The Terminator (1984), think I'll save some money and stick with the blu ray
The Blu-ray has the 5.1 audio track which has remixed audio with new sound effects. So even the Blu-ray isn't the authentic experience. If you want the authentic experience then you'll need the MGM Special Edition DVD which has the original mono mix.
I'll have to look into this I think! Audio is not my forte and I'd never pretend it is, but the idea of new sfx is pretty shit really.

Where can I get the GOOD Blu-ray of T1?

🎥💥🎥💥 I do feel your pain😐. I saw Robocop (1987) 35mm film projection with scratches, grain and damage.... And it looked AMAZING😍 it was like a grind house version of Robocop. Their ripping us off😮
It's brilliant better than Blu ray disc from 2014 hope James Cameron re release Terminator 2 Judgment Special Edition Dolby Vision+Atmos 😮
Early days pumping controversary for the big 'T', but the signs are there, and will probably blow up out of proportion again. Totally get the JAWS 3 making AI faces though 😝. I like the classic grain, but thought Aliens did look better than the blu-ray when comparing on mymoonization. All that said, JC obviously got the message... 😅
Chill out, you’re acting like you won the lottery but lost the ticket!!
Yeah, really bouncing off the walls haha
The 4K Aliens transfer has a lot of weird fake details that make the faces too smooth or too sharp. Some faces from a distance just looks wrong and when the actors are turning their heads, it doesn't look right sometimes. They shouldn't have used A.I for the enchantment and should just retain the grain. The only positive I can say is it's nowhere near as bad as the True Lies and Jaws 4K.
wieso sieht Jaws nicht gut aus?
Der Film sah noch nie besser aus.
Imagine this old movies, or any movie in 8k! Cause i bet there will start sometime to relase also in 8k! Or i am wrong!
I haven't bought them, and I also agree he can do what he wants with them. Which I do actually talk about in these videos.
@@iododendron3416 The first Guardians movie on 4k is ok but it's too damn dark. MM Fury Road 4k indeed looks good.

@jeremydrew1227 No it's not. If this was true, Christopher Nolan's movies would look like grainy shit too. He only films his movies ON FILM, not digital. T2 4K looks fantastic to me and like it was filmed yesterday. Crisp and clear pictures are the new standard!

4K is the best possible home video format that will likely ever exist. In the right hands, it's absolutely incredible. Not really comparable to 3D at all.
