Indonesia begins multilateral naval drills amid regional tension

- Indonesia is hosting a week of naval drills with 35 countries taking part.
They include the US, China, and Russia.
They come at a time of heightened geopolitical tension.
But organisers say this is a chance for cooperation between militaries.
Al Jazeera’s Jessica Washington reports from Makassar on the island of Sulawesi.

Many Indonesians are very proud and patriotic which is interesting to see as a westerner. I mean an optimism about doing new things and assuming a broader international role. I think it’s similar to western countries circa 1910. Let us hope military conflict can be avoided.

Indonesia has the most confusing relationship with other countries.
Indonesian disliked China but in such in good relationship with Russia, Iran, Saudi and even North Korea (the country with the highest positive opinion about North Korea). Indonesian really loved Japan (the country with the highest positive opinion on Japan) but dislike western countries.
Is not confusing when you know the history. Indonesia dislike China because many of Chinese-Indonesian descent control many economic sector in the country. Indonesia love Russia because Russia or Soviet Union helped Indonesia during Trikora and Dwikora operation. Indonesia or specially Indonesian moslem dislike western because involvment in middle east, Nationalist and secular Indonesian too hate western because its involvement during cold war and installing Corrupt Dictator Soeharto
Indonesia like Japan beside attrocities in ww2 because Japan really helped Indonesia with their war reparation also heavily invest in manufactur especially in automotive, beside Japan culture is heavily ingrained like anime so Indonesia had many weebs.
