    Infrastructure and poverty eradication can be done simultaneously. The government is a multi-sectoral body, it has the ability to focus on multiple things at once. Building a high-speed railway line does not necessarily mean neglecting poverty and unemployment. I understand some might fear that this project will be a white elephant and a debt trap, and I'm no expert so my opinion must not be taken without a grain of salt, but I do believe the market is there IF the government has the will power to create an integrated transportation system so that the train will be accessible to many, especially in Bandung where the main station is quite a distance from the city center and with no mass transport connecting the two. Also, I do believe Indonesia has a strong enough economy to repay the loan in the long term, and unlike Sri Lanka, a default would be unthinkable for an economy the size of Indonesia.

      In fact, most high-speed railways in China suffer losses, but the economic benefits brought by high-speed rail connectivity far outweigh the losses.I believe the population of Indonesia can afford a railway. In China, although most railways face losses, the railways connecting major cities are profitable. The cities connected by high-speed rail in Indonesia have a large population, so I think there is no reason to suffer losses, if the operation is good.

    @Macca-zx7gz Год назад +9

    This is a great initiative for the people. Rather than focusing on whether the rail network is profitable, you need to look at the benefits to the wider economy & infrastructure and the revenue that will create.
    In addition to trade within & outside of Indonesia, it enables a workforce to travel for work (without having to abandon their home towns), businesses to expand, locate or be created in other smaller regions & it still be within short travel to the city.
    This means local economies & communities can still thrive rather than be abandoned in pursuit of work. This is aside the tourist market that will take advantage of this way of travel.
    The US/ Europe talk a good story, but despite decades of dominating the interests of Asia, what is to show for it? They don't build anything.
    Anything of value is taken from the people for the profit of external companies. They're not interested in the needs of local people.
    Indonesia like all nations, want the opportunity to invest & develop to their full potential. They have a lot to offer.
    These loans from China are longterm, you have something to show for it & it allows Indonesia to grow.

    Japan and China compete to win this project. But then Indonesia decided to choose china
    The reason is simple.
    Not only China willing to fund alot of money despite only have 40% of the share, china also willing to transfer the technology on how to build and maintain HSR to Indonesian government
    Transfer of technology is important, because if the construction of Jakarta-Bandung HSR is success, Indonesian government will be more confident in constructing another HSR in the future without the help of foreign investor.
    This is not strange why China willing to share the technology to Indonesia. Because Indonesia and China already in good relationship even before the first indonesian kingdom that become chain link of modern Indonesian civilization even exist, which is the Kingdom of Kutai Kertanegara that born in 5th century AD

    These projects are very difficult to recover capital. If a train line serves 50 million people, it will be effective.

      public transportation is NOT to make profit by itself. It is to benefit the people using it. In China railway contributes to economy much more than its debt.

    • @JOKER_ND
      @JOKER_ND Год назад

      @@dukai2004 I do not deny its benefits, but to use it effectively and reduce losses as much as possible is still the problem. You know, China has mastered construction technology and high-speed trains, they have the transportation needs of more than a billion people and a large amount of goods, but they are still at a loss.
      It will become a burden if not exploited enough.
      Its operating and maintenance costs are very high.
      hope indonesia will use it thoroughly, and most effectively.
