Hard to imagine a more perfect casting in a TV role. One of the most iconic characters ever. Laurie just killed it. And for 5 years or so, I had no idea he was British.
I was only able to tell he is British from how he looks. There is something about British actors that gives that off unless their accent slipped. I can't really pinpoint it
He got turned down in his 1st audition because one of the producers wanted a North American accent and he was using a more southern. It was only during the review that one of the assistants had to explain he was English and acting and could talk in accent they asked him.
The reason he looked so rough was that he just had been shooting a movie about being stranded in a desert after a plane crash. That's what he was joking about in the beginning about "things being rough lately".

to pull an american accent off so effortlessly and flawlessly is truly a testament to this man's talent. He not only got the accent right, but his attitude for the character was almost spot on to what ended up in the pilot episode. Fantastic!
@Jourdy Wongtrakun I'd argue that theAmerican accent is easy to mimic because of how varied American accents are. Put a person from LA, NYC, and New Orleans in the same room and I'll bet they sound very different lol
He says, right at the beginning, "Excuse my appearance, but things have not been going too well lately." And yet, this is the appearance of House through almost the entire show.
Here's something fun: neither did the people casting the character. They initially required an American accent, but Hugh Laurie pretended, never told them, and got the role.
Kanjoos Lahookvinhaakvinhookvin That's not completely true. Hugh was already an actor and pretty well known in the UK. It is true that the director was entirely convinced from this audition that Hugh was American. But other people involved in the casting process has done a bit of research before selection :p
Hmm, from my experience as a patient in the UK, doctors here (at least NHS doctors - there’s no affordable care act here and I was literally turned down for health insurance- they wouldn’t touch me lol) the doctors are cold, and often unsympathetic, however they are pretty polite usually. I guess that was your point though, doctors aren’t like the hero types you see on shows like Chicago hospital or whatever the fuck it’s called (what happened to Dick Wolf ffs, law and order was great, but all this Chicago shit is, well, shit). Anyway, some doctors are alright, a lot are arrogant cunts, which I guess the team on House are, but, at least they have a sense of humour (maybe not Cameron or that fucking Australoid)
It's the ego. I'm only hearing this feedback from my senior who is a clerk and he said it doesn't even matter which hospital I'll rotate into because all doctors are practically the same (in reference to being egotistical).
You know what's funny though. When you really dig down into it, did he really have questionable ethics? Let me preface this by saying that western ethics have some major flaws that I vehemently disagree with, but lets use one theory to test this. Yes House had addiction issues and was a jerk, but most of the time his actions were for the greater good. Utilitarianism determines right from wrong focusing on the outcomes. The most ethical choice is the one that creates the greatest good for the greatest number of people. So one could argue that although he wasn't bright and sunshiny about it, he did take the most ethical route.

Best part was the director only wanted an American to play house, and when he saw Haugh's tape he said now that's an American. And the when they really met the director was speechless.
The first thing I saw him in was Stuart Little. And years later when I was in my teens I saw house and my world was completely altered cause I never thought of actors to me they were the character they were bringing to life but it just enhances my respect for the person who can have such diverse acting to turn on a dime from one character to another and be so damn fluid
You should sit through the Flight of the Phoenix remake he was in. He shot this audition in the hotel while filming that movie. I think that might've really helped him nail the disheveled look for the part.
Hugh Laurie has flawless delivery and razor sharp wit. All that skill and then having to speak like an American. I can’t imagine anyone else in the role!!
Unbelievable audition. Apologizes for his appearance in his own accent and then snaps perfectly into the character we all came to love. And they kept the disheveled appearance for 8 seasons. He did not know it was the lead role and had barely skimmed the script. David Shore must have been knocked out when he saw his idea take form in this audition. They call him up and the rest is history. He didn't think it would stick, and barely unpacked his suitcase for the first season. What a gem.
I heard they were specifically turning away British people, and didn't notice he was British when they got the audition. They were surprised when he showed up with his accent
@@aidaneaglesfield9148 literally nobody outside of America phases it as "hiding your accent" because only Americans are pretentious and self centred enough to consider their accent as a default.
To make it even better the director only wanted American actors because he didn't think a fake accent could sell it. It was a surprising first day apparently.
"I apologize for my appearance, but things havent been going too well lately" and they got him to look like that for the whole show. I get the feeling his disheveled appearance only added to the already spectacular acting in this tape. Thank you for sharing ❤
I love the fact that when I saw him in House, I didn't recognise him. He was in Jeeves and Wooster, and Blackadder, and he played a posh Brit in both, who was slightly foppish and not much use. @@SeyrenLA Yeah, apparently he is (although I haven't see it). I worked in a hospital for 25 years, his character was more representative of many doctors than any of the other TV doctors I've seen.
House’s questionable ethics aside, he really was one of the most brilliant assholes on tv.
