  • A very brief analysis into some of the horror elements in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and how it uses mythology, folklore and the environment to invoke some of this fear.

I think out of the entire game, the area that kept me on the edge the most was the Senpou Temple, Mt. Kongo, everything is straightforward, there are no hidden enemies, you can see everyone you need to kill, yet there's something so off and creepy about that environment that just unsettles you, the music adds even more to it

It's a nice narrative, thank you for the video. I completely agree with the horror part of Sekiro and fromsoft's handling of cosmic horror. Your tone of voice seems suitable for this type of narrative. It can help move your videos forward.

For me, Sekiro has the most effective horror out of all of the soulsbourne titles. The grotesqueness of Bloodbornes body horror and lovecraftian gods are terrifying, but the world is much more distant to ours than Sekiro's.
Throughout Ashina you're murdering men who are wrapped up in a conflict they had no choice in. People and beasts alike are infected with a parasitic immortality that takes everything from them except their bodies. Honorable people are being experimented on below people's feet and it's all being uncovered as you take a stroll through the beautiful countryside of Japan.
Also, few games have had my heart pounding as much as encountering the serpent on my first playthrough.

That sword in the guardian ape's neck belongs to the Sculptor.

It most likely belongs to his former (now deceased) partner, the owner of the malcontent ring, Kingfisher.

@@vursey2670 No, because the slender finger found in the guardian apes belly has holes drilled through it. Which is said to be a shinobi technique. Meaning either the kingfisgher was missing a finger or someone else had her finger before it got inside the guardian ape.
Then you have to ask: who took the scupltor's arm?

@@tileux It's clearly stated that Isshin was the one to cut off the sculptor's arm when the sculptor almost became a shura.

@@tileuxthe story goes that Kingfisher, while Orangutan was off fighting in the war 20 years prior, had learned about the flower in the Sunken Valley and decided to face the Guardian Ape in a mission to retrieve the flower. She successfully managed to deliver a Death Blow on the Ape. Unfortunately, this is the exact moment she’d find out the Guardian Ape has the centipede immortality. Sadly, Kingfisher didn’t come equipped with the Mortal Blade and was devoured. Her finger prosthetic being the only thing the Ape couldn’t digest

Great video, had me hooked from start to finish. NGL, I wanted to see my bane from this game that made me drop it for some time and those were the Headless. The fact that they were apparition type monsters and the eerie music, the fact the could teleport in a ghastly yet smooth fashion made me wet my pants more than once. After getting back at it, I would say this is a way better horror game than others that are supposed to be Horror Games themselves.

Thank you! I definitely agree, doesn't help that the headless literally slowed you down and caused terror buildup. One way to scare a gamer is to handicap them!

I just beat the game last night I got back in June as my first souls like and it was amazing and I thought it was only me that felt like it was a slight horror game I started a second playthrough today for the Shura ending and I’m already on the final boss

I'm so glad I found this video - I was just thinking today after fighting the 2 apes (and being as suprised as you were) - that sekiro is pretty spooky. Great work!

Man, I've got to give this game another try. I simply wasn't enjoying it enough in the first few hours to give it more time than that, but the world building and subtle story telling you describe have me intrigued.

So far I think sekiro is better than Elden ring I actually loved the combat it felt less cheesy and more skill requiring and the world is so good I personally think its map is amazing it really immersed me and the story is top tier I’m watching lore videos after beating the game. And the game is very horror like now that I’ve beaten it
