  • Let's take a look at Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. These planets are called the terrestrial planets.
The inner planets are the four planets closest to the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They are all terrestrial planets, which means they are made of rock and metal. The inner planets are much smaller and denser than the outer planets, and they have solid surfaces.
    Mercury
The smallest and closest planet to the Sun
Has no atmosphere and a very hot surface
Has a large iron core and a thin crust
Has a very short day and a very long year
    Venus
The second planet from the Sun
Has a very thick atmosphere and a very hot surface
Has a very slow rotation and a very long day
    Has no moons
    Earth
The third planet from the Sun
Has a moderate atmosphere and a relatively cool surface
Has a liquid water ocean and a solid surface
    Has one moon
    Mars
The fourth planet from the Sun
Has a thin atmosphere and a cold surface
