    My husband is from India . He received a shoebox gift as a kid his family was pretty poor .just the other day we where at a church where there was a table for Samaritan's purse gifts . He is now now in his 30s he got so emotional about the gifts he got as a child especially a hot wheels car that had his name on it . He loves making gift boxes and giving it helped our relationship also .

    Hi Kayla, Thank-you for answering these questions. I might add that at the Processing Centre the integrity of each box is preserved. I have just completed to two shifts at the Processing Centre. We ensured all boxes were comfortably full. Items that were not permitted because of risk of harm to a child and/or their community were replaced with filler items.

    • @BarretoFamily
      @BarretoFamily  Год назад +1

      Such a great thing to know!!! It is so important for givers to know that what they pack is sent to the child and not changed (apart from hazardous items). Changes are not made to the gifts at any point in processing or distributing so what they give is what the child gets. (things may be added to help fill a box, or exchanged if an item isn't allowed, but otherwise the gift is given as sent) This is definitely important to share. Thank you so much for letting us know that the integrity starts with you all at the processing centers. :)

    It brakes my heart to think someone would steal from the poor especially people who would call themselves Christians ? We were not a very rich family we received gifts as kids and saw our parents struggling to provide for us . But that's what made me be very giving and I'm very blessed to help others .

    I am packing boxes this year it is my first time. I took my teen son with me to get the gifts he is the youngest of 4 and my other kiddos are grown and have moved out. I miss packing gifts for my boys (yes 4 boys) he had a lot of fun and I was going to pack for each age group but as I looked up things and prayed and ask God to help me decide who these gifts will be for he answered I decided to pack for older kids. We bought stuff and had a lot of fun doing it now I need a few more boxes. I guess I over bought not realizing what I was doing. So when I started packing my boxes I remembered my kiddos being young and how it felt to give them gifts. Just small stuff and how much joy it brought them. We didn't have a lot of money when my kiddos were younger and I worked 2 jobs to make sure they had all they needed. I remembered the people who gave to us when we had so little. I honestly will never forget the people who did. So just remember people are God's hands and feet he uses other people in this world to fill a need. I hope the kiddos who receive the boxes love them...just like I cherished the time spent with my 16 year old son who helped pick out every item and so lovingly thought of what a kiddo in the age group could use or have fun with. As we drove home I asked him what he wanted for Christmas...he had no answer sometimes God moves us to remember how much we have when others have so little. This will be one thing I will never forget spending time with my ultra loving kiddo picking out what seems like stuff to us but such a blessing to others. I hope I am leaving a legacy. ❤

    My son just received a box today. I had heard of this organization so knew some about it before he even told me. He's silly excited, and I looked up some videos of other kids around the world receiving theirs and he said that's exactly how they all were at his school today. Everyone received different things, some useful, some not, but the boxes seemed to be balanced. It would have been neat to have a personal note from the giver inside so we can thank them personally, but most kids wouldn't have been able to read it if in English.

    Thank you, this puts me more at ease! If I may, have you ever heard the rumor that boxes go to the wrong age group or gender? Do most of the children receive boxes? I’ve heard stories about there being a shortage of boxes and children being turned away, but I’m sure Samaritan’s does their best.

    • @BarretoFamily
      @BarretoFamily  15 дней назад +2

      Great questions. I haven't done a Samaritan's Purse video in a while, so I will plan to do one soon. I'll try to answer these questions in detail in the video. But, the short answer is yes:
      Sometimes boxes are mislabeled and go to the wrong gender, but the hope is to catch it and correct it so the child gets the right box. In the chaos of handing out 100+ boxes, the leaders might also accidentally give the wrong gender, but again the hope is to fix this and swap the box for the child.
      There can also be box shortages for various reasons. Sometimes a region doesn't have enough to give out. Sometimes pastors don't request enough. Sometimes pastors don't plan for the amount of people that come to special events and so they have too few. We always try to ask for a few extra and return the ones we don't need rather than having too few.

    Love how you mention deodorant. I stopped packing soap bc it’s controversial now, but I’m wondering if I should try adding deodorant for older kids next year. I just figured it will eventually run out but I guess most things will anyways like you said. Deodorant over soap?

    • @BarretoFamily
      @BarretoFamily  Год назад +2

      I think deodorant is definitely more beneficial than soap for a few reasons:
      1) Soap is fairly inexpensive and easy to come by. It is a common item with lots of brands.
      2) Deodorant is a more pricey item that often has to be shared.
      3) Although it will run out, it lasts for a lot longer than soap. A bar of soap is used up in a week... Deodorant lasts up to months (depending on use, size, and brand).
      4) In some locations water is a luxury, and therefore they may not get to bathe every day, but they could use the deodorant in between baths as well.
      Just a few personal thoughts on the topic.

    I thought the children who received a box had never had gifts before, is this the case. My friend is a missionary both in Rwanda and Nepal and after the Nepal earthquake the NewDawn charity who she belongs to, built the Little Feet orphanage. They have never had a shoebox as yet.

    • @BarretoFamily
      @BarretoFamily  Год назад +1

      The goal of OCC is for each child to only ever receive one shoebox, so when they get the gift, it should hopefully be the first OCC shoebox gift that they have ever received.
      However, there is no way of knowing if it is their first gift ever in their entire life.
      I hope shoeboxes make it to your missionary friends in Nepal and Rwanda. That would certainly be a blessing for those kids.

    Hi there, love your videos! Just had a couple questions...would you recommend not including any water squirter toys? They do not resemble weapons. I just wasn't sure if every kid getting boxes have a lot of access to water. Also, how does that work with shipping clear plastic boxes? Is there any problems with everything in the box being completely visible?

    • @BarretoFamily
      @BarretoFamily  Год назад +2

      I think it is fine to send squirter toys. Many kids will live near natural water sources (rivers, lakes, etc.). Yes, there will be some kids who might receive the box that may not have easy access to water, but in many areas they will. And... even if they don't have water, they can still play with the toys as a figure or blow air out of them at other kids (our daughter loves this, and we have seen teens use little toys of this nature to pester others in good fun by making the air squirt in their ears).
      You can absolutely ship a clear box, with no issues. The kids will see a bit of what is inside before they open it, but this isn't a huge issue. If you want it to be more of a surprise so that they can't see in, you can wrap/line the inside of a box with a fun bandana. Robynn recently did this while packing a box (you can see her box here: ruclips.net/video/G7PovTETCSw/видео.html).

    • @BarretoFamily
      @BarretoFamily  Год назад

      The short answer is that we don't know yet.
      We still have to apply, wait to see if our neighborhood gets boxes, see if there are enough boxes, and think about whether or not we can host an event for "new" kids. Since the goal of OCC is not to give the same kids boxes, we have to think and pray about whether or not we have a location where we can do outreach and have a group of kids that are different from last year.
      We will let you know as the time gets closer. ;)

    Okay. So. I'm doing this for the first time. I chose to pack a themed box for a girl, ages 10-14. The theme is bullet journaling. The items I'm including are an A5 size binder (3 ring), lined paper, index tab pages, pockets, gel pens, washi tape, scissors, glue stick.
    I will include an introduction to bullet journaling, and why this is important to me. It makes order out of chaos for me. And I wish I'd had this tool when I was a pre-teen to teenager. I'm going to send photos of my bujo and what tabs I use, and why I use them, so that there is a personal connection between the gift and why it was given.
    Do you have any general advice on connecting with this little girl? I'm open to that, and I have been educating myself by watching videos, and some people have recommended sending my email address for follow up if the child so chooses.

      That sound like a great box so far some little girl is going to have so much fun creating a journal. Be sure you also include something from each category of items on the “What to pack” list
      Something soft like a stuffie or doll or bag tag stuffie
      Games/puzzle or ball
      Hygiene items like a toothbrush, soap / wash cloth hair brush and hair accessories/rubber bands
      Water bottles hold lots inside - I put pencils and hair accessories and erasers in the ones I send. I don’t like to send air - if there is a space in my box it gets filled with a little something
      School supplies regular pencils, ruler, scissors and coloring pencils/crayon
      Maybe a fun tshirt or dress
      Your journal item sounds like your WOW item.
      I personally take all the packaging from all the items unless it’s needed to hold it together. It save space and reduces trash on the receiving end where they may not have trash service.

      I make cards for all my boxes with a personal letter, there's usually a translator there to help them read. I have heard from children/their guardians in the past by email but lots of others have heard by facebook messenger so I have included my profile link this year, and of course my mailing address but I don't think many can afford to send mail. With a certain box I have wrote a bit more (like the box in memory of my Nan, and one of my cat boxes talking about my own cats), and a picture of us so they know what we look like and it helps connect them to the actual person that sent the box.

    I have a hypothetical question I want your opinion on. Someone pack shoeboxes the number doesn’t matter but they don’t bring it for collection week. Maybe they’re away or whatever the case may be. They also don’t bring it in at the time where operation Christmas child is processing the boxes. At the time they reach out operation Christmas child has already started distributing and delivering the boxes and so there’s no opportunity. Again hypothetical. This person is let’s just say moving and so they don’t have the ability to store these boxes for another 10 months or whatever the case may be. They also don’t have the funds to mail your box out to a foreign country to be processed there and delivered. What should a person do. At least what would your opinion be. I’d like to hear it from everybody I’d be interested in just seeing. This is not happening to me it’s just very hypothetical. I would potentially say to contact an OCC Facebook group and look for a church or individual who packs year round and is willing to receive and store your boxes until the next year. Otherwise, the person has to hold on to them and wait for the next collection time.
