I love this channel, its a lot more geniune then other bushcraft/outdoors type channels, instead of stuff like "HOW TO SURVIVE IN THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!!" Which althouth entertaining, isnt the most practical, your a true outdoorsman in my mind. Practicality over zombies.
Thanx again Krit, .. , I see alot of copy Skookum Bush Tool, and I think they are great, I see some beautiful copy Skookum's made, Which brings me to mine. I have have a authentic Skookum Bush Tool and mine is made in the 3V, I luv that knife, Mine also has the micro tango tip which adds a little more strength to tge very tip, It sort of looks like the very tip broke off, But on mine it's very sharp and it cuts perfectly. I also have the Estwings in the 3 sizes, and I also have the Estwings Double Bit Hatchet which I use the most now. Infact last weekend I teamed my Benchmade 156 CSK in D2 with tge Estwings Double Bit Hatchet and I added my Bacho Laplander to make a supurb Trio, The reason was because I just found out most recently that I coukd make curls with a serrated blade. It preformed great, Thanx for sharing your bush craft tool atleast some of them, I know and saw some of your other Beauties. Again Thanx for sharing.
Awesome, I love this series!! A few camping trips ago I forgot my eating utensil so I had to make a spoon. It was super fun and motivated me to try and make some more wood tools. We have a plum tree in the back yard and i was thinking of making a spoon out of it. Andy
Another insightful video guys! If you're ever in the market for another crook knife, you don't necessarily have to aim for "crook knives". When I went to school for Gun Smithing, one of the course subjects covered making custom wood stocks with different chisels. There are whole chisel kits at places like Brownell's and MidwayUSA for reasonable pricing. Yes they are intended for Gun stock making, but at the end of the day, a quality wood carving tool is a quality wood carving tool.
+Alpha Charlie Well said. I liked Ben and Lois' stuff so I wanted to support them. But I agree, there are lots of options out there. Thanks for watching! -Krik
I'm busy making a spoon for my tall travel mug. I have a very nice metal teaspoon (bit of cheap stuff from the local budget store but I like the design and the size of the bowl) but the length is all wrong - only about half a cm of spoon peeps out above my tea! So I traced the spoon out onto the wood but I made the middle bit of the handle about two centimetres longer. So... it's my first spoon and if I don't chop my fingers off let's see where it takes me. The handle design is TOTALLY PERFECT for a little kolrosing...
And for sharpening the crook knife I used a pen and wet/dry sandpaper taped around it and a ceramic rod... And leather for strop that pig skin wrap on a pen tube will serve as a strop as well.
Very insightful seeing your carving kit and looking forward to the series. You may wanna consider getting a Mora 106 carving knife, not so much for detail work but because you get a better finish on curves, etc due to the narrow blade width. Are you a member of the huge green woodworking group on Facebook? ~Peace~
+Zed Outdoors I am not a member of many Facebook groups. Should I join it? And you have a point about having a smaller knife. Thanks for the knowledge Zed. Be centered my friend. -Krik
Black Owl Outdoors This particular group is the only one I am a member of on Facebook and contains some of the most incredibly talented green woodworkers from all over the world. I'll add both of you to it and you can maybe judge for yourselves ~Peace~
This is great, I've been wanting to start carving, but not with all the little expensive knives carving dedicated knives. I want to use the stuff I take camping/hunting and the hook knife is the only one of these tools I don't have, and that's the "luxury" I will get soon enough. I look forward to the next step!
+Piper Vucelick If you want to buy one, buy a Ben Orford! You only have to pay one. Buying a cheaper Mora crook knife means, you will bye an expensive handmade knife anyway. ;-)
Video idea - there are lots of vids on sharpening spoon knives, but would love to see how you do it. I always look forward to Black Owl Outdoors vids. Cheers.
ah ... the spoon carving bug, hehe. Once it bites, you start finding blades you 'need' ;) I recommend the Mora 106, it's strong, practical, has a wonderful sharp edge and holds it too, it's reasonably priced and a good place to start your wood carving journey with. Have fun and enjoy :)
Say Heah Krik, great review, Yeah, great stuff, My Fav's Carver, I have a Skookum Bush Tool that's a 4" blade, normally their 4 1/4" blade, but on mine it has a real curved belly, At first I didn't think I was going to like it, But then I realized how good a carver a curved blade really is, In my case it became my Fav Carver, , ,
Another great one guys! Looking forward to the rest of the series! You guys have been upping your game on video production and channel presentation. Great job and wish you continued success! (I will be using your content in my (channel) apprenticeship and mention you guys when ever I use what I learn from you in one of my projects. Regards, Denis
Thanks for this video, and the upcoming carving series. I just started carving. I too use an Estwing, but I am looking for a better crafting axe. The Estwing feels too heavy for me to control very well. Many times I end up using an old butcher knife.
funny you mention the bear. not sure if you are near the pole steeple, but two seasons ago while fishing I ran into a brown bear there. fishing there for many years and bears were never around. ranger said it was a rare type black bear and they came in because of a nice blueberry crop that year. he growled at me and then took off......never know where they will turn up ! PAPA DUKES
+Devin Pennypacker (Lazy Kayaker Outdoors) Yes they're the Chacos we did a video for. They've been working great so far. No complaints nor any signs of weak spots. Only applied Obenaufs once. Super happy with them.
Good video! I'm excited to see the others in the series. Another interesting carving tool would be the carving jack. It's a pocket knife that has a hook knife on it. Its pretty expensive, but from what I've seen its worth it. The carving jack even comes with its own sharpening kit. Here's a pretty good video on it: ruclips.net/video/5_Fwn20NJL0/видео.html Are you going to do any more leatherwork videos? Steps2survival
Love this and the leather tools video! Very helpful! Any luck on canvas? I found a company online called bigduckcanvas.com I'm getting some samples of canvas and cotton webbing in the mail soon.
+Maynard Madsen I actually ordered canvas from them. It seems like good stuff. I was most interested in finding the correct weight for my projects. I have a good idea now.
+Black Owl Outdoors I received the samples, seems like great stuff. I'm planning on getting some tools and leather from tandys, and some canvas and making my self a pack similar to the Duluth pack scout pack, or the scout master. Plus maybe some wet formed pouches etc. it'll be a start at least! Thanks again for all the great videos and advice!
Those sheaths are stunning.
Good idea for a series, looking forward to learning from master krik a thing or tow that will help me out in my carvings.
+ScrambledO Thanks for watching buddy. But I am certainly not a master. Those little men you carved are pretty darn good.
100% agreed.....the wood does speak to you!!
YES!!!!! Kirk bro I've been searching the last few months for videos like this!!!! Awesome!!!!

Dude your editing is awesome! I'm subscribing.
Fantismal. I really look forward to the videos in this series. I use a More Companion and a Mora Crooked knife for my carving knives. Thanks
+Teds Outdoors HoodCraft Survival Have you had good success with the mora crooked knife?
Yes, although I have not used it all to much.

I love seeing how everyone's carving tools are so different. I may have to do some kind of VR to this vid, now...
+Raindance Bushcraft I'd love to see your kit..
Great vid. Thanks. The sheaths are beautiful too!
You've carved some very attractive pieces.
+Teachering Thanks they were a lot of fun to make.

Andy
+Andy Timinsky That's the best time to make something! I hear plum is pretty nice to work with. Let me know how it goes for ya. -Krik
Let them chops grow! Nice video and thanks for sharing brother.
+TheLanWoo Ha! It's been a few years since I wore the chops. We'll see how long they stick around this time.
One of the coolest videos to date!
Hi Kirk. Nice series. I look forward watching.... ken
+KennethKramm Hey there Ken! Hope you're well buddy.
What do you use to oil your carved utencils? Please help advise. Great video
Thanks for the video..
Great carving work :)
+Ed Man Thanks.
Great! I will prepare myself for carving! Looking forward to the instruction!

I like your spoons they are great. ohhhh a nice shiny axe I like that
+Mossy Bark Thanks. I try to keep my tools clean. But to be honest, I haven't carved anything with that axe in a while.
What kind of oil or finish do you use on your wood utensils to seal the wood and still be good with food and eat off of?
+The Last Huntsmen I was planning to talk about that later in the series. But I use a mixture of beeswax and food safe mineral oil.
Cool thanks I'll have to see the process in your later video.
And for sharpening the crook knife I used a pen and wet/dry sandpaper taped around it and a ceramic rod... And leather for strop that pig skin wrap on a pen tube will serve as a strop as well.
I love the mora spoon knife. It was really sharp indeed, but you really need to oil it.

Nice video guys...You should do a video on the leather holster you have for your Bahco saw!

Ben Orfod crook knife very nice! Have Mocotaugan
Thanks for this video, and the upcoming carving series. I just started carving. I too use an Estwing, but I am looking for a better crafting axe. The Estwing feels too heavy for me to control very well. Many times I end up using an old butcher knife.
+Joshua Ritzheimer Hey man use what works for you. As for control, you may just need to use it more to build up your strength.
I read a trick with knives like that: use it to cut a chunk of wood its shape, then you can load the wood with compound and sharpen/hone it
hey kirk, whats a good saw to use?
are you gonna come out with more carving series vids?
i love your work
I love this... So pretty and simple.. How long have you been craving?
+jessykapop Thanks. I've been carving for about 1.5 years.
Amazing. It must come so easy for you..cheers
great video, thanks for sharing!
Nice vlog.
Wow! Have you made a LOT of videos!

Love the channel, excited for the series! Are those the chacos boots your still wearing? If so how are they holding up?
+Devin Pennypacker (Lazy Kayaker Outdoors) Yes they're the Chacos we did a video for. They've been working great so far. No complaints nor any signs of weak spots. Only applied Obenaufs once. Super happy with them.
Really nice spoons I started carving spoons but there not as nice as yours
Nice video thanks for sharing atb John
+Turtle Bushcraft Thanks John.
How many knives do you usually carry in your bushcraft adventures?
Hi guys, great videos, but what is the backstory of "what's up turtles"?
Oh Yeah, I converted my Para Ordnance Expert S.S .45 a.c.p into a .460 Rowland, plus the extra ammo sort of became my bush defence weapon, , ,
Kirk! I need a sheath like that for my mora classic 1! interested in making/selling one? :)
We may be able to work something out. Send me an email at blackowloutdoors@gmail.com.
Can you make some more videos on making a spoon in the very near future
Why was there never an episode 2 i was really looking forward to it
+matt canaday just because there hasn't been, doesn't mean there won't!
In that case I will patiently be waiting for the highly anticipated Vol. 2 :D
the more is from Sweden! it's also over seas
Hat is that?
What's the website for the crook knife?
+James Mears His crook knifes are in stock most of the time. It's more difficult to get some of his special made blades.
They didnt sell out after Dave Canterbury talked about him. ;-)
+Piet AusHamburch I'm tempted but 25.00 dollars shipping is ruff I may wait appreciate your comments guys!
Hm... I don't know any american smithes. I'm from Europe. I'm buying local. :-(
What about the Opinel knives?
+Msilverhammer What about them?
+Black Owl Outdoors I would have thought that you would be using the Opinel knives for wood carving tasks. Do the Mora"s work better for you?
+Msilverhammer Opinels I have found to not be the best for carving unless you shorten the blade.
This channel is smaller then I remember I thought you had around 100k sub
+Kevin Golden nope! this is the most subscribers we've ever had.
I am most definitely not a turtle. Haha
Good video! I'm excited to see the others in the series. Another interesting carving tool would be the carving jack. It's a pocket knife that has a hook knife on it.
