- Hello, my name is Kelly, here’s my accepted Calarts sketchbook.
I started working on it in September and barely made it in time to hand it in. I thought I could finish it fast, but turns out each page took around 2-3 hours, and it was kind of hard to juggle this with school...So please start early. :)
Sketchbook: Denik journal hardcover 8.5x11 (thick print paper, good for pen, not so good for watercolor)

This is one of the most inspiring sketchbooks I’ve seen in a long time, thanks for sharing!
I think whenever I see CalArts accepted sketchbooks I see the same variations of styles over and over again. This one was so original and I can see the amount of thought and creativity u put into each page. It’s helpful to know that you don’t have to give up your own art style to join calarts. Thanks

ah, thank you for telling us how long you took on your sketchbook!! I always see all these amazing sketchbooks and just assume that their entries take little time, but its reassuring to hear that other people also take a few hours for each page. Your art is amazing btw!!

The polar bears remind me a bit of the Aardman Creature Comforts shorts. I think it’s the expressions, like you can hear them talking. Great sketchbook. Not at all surprised you were accepted.

Kia Sallis go to lifedrawing as much as you can, take pictures of people in motion so you can draw them later. Have a bit of everything in the sketchbook, try all kinds of styles to show them what you can do. They want to see the majority of the sketchbook filled with observational work. And lastly, start early, you can always cover up pages you don't like.
Did u have any special training to get to the skill ur at? I wannna level up but idk what to do to get there
marium ahmad hello! I did receive training in art. I went to a visual art program in high school and I used to go to art classes outside of school. Mainly, those programs taught me technique and observational skills, but you don’t have to go to art classes to learn those skills, there are a lot of online resources you can look at if you want to improve. I didn’t only rely on those programs, I studied things like anatomy and rendering in my own time. To name a few youtubers who teach art, there is Proko, istebrak, and Marco bucci.
However there are perks of attending art classes, like having a teacher’s feedback as you work and practicing regularly. If you want to attend art classes, I recommend learning life drawing or classes that teach you observational or fundamental skills (ex: drawing objects / rooms). Remember, classes can’t teach you everything. Looking at other artists’ art, art tutorials, and youtube videos helped me a great deal.
