    I have many Vostoks, both modern Russian ones and vintage Soviet ones. Apart from being fascinating timepieces with an interesting history, there is no doubt they are astonishing value for money, and just goes to prove you don't need to pay a small fortune for a good watch.

    The friction bezel is to specification. Back when these were made every dive watch had a bidirectional rotating bezel. I believe the idea of a unidirectional clicking bezel was introduced by Doxa in the late 60s. All of the watches from that era that are still made have since changed to clicking bezels, but it seems vostok is keen on keeping things as they were, and I love them for it.

      You can get a stainless steel wire which makes it harder to turn

    • @mime0815
      @mime0815 Год назад +12

      I heard somewhere that Vostok designed the bezel in such a way that when diving, the acrylic glass expands due to the pressure and presses against the bezel, so that the position of the bezel can no longer be accidentally adjusted. So it's not a bug, but a feature. ;-)

  • @gasparjohnson3774
    @gasparjohnson3774 4 года назад +21

    The bezel is designed to be bi-directional because it doesn't depend on a ratchet to keep it in place, it depends on water pressure from 10 feet underwater to accomplish that, which it does, just like the water pressure increases the waterproofing of the case by the compressor case and acrylic dial compressing to make a better seal.

    Thank you for the review! I bought the 24 hour dial version of this, and for that the click-less bezel actually has good use: You can use it as a solar compass. If you set the bezel according to your time zone, latitude and perhaps even the equation of time, and orient your short dial towards the sun, you have your orientation.
    I always like to have backups on these things, and as long as the sun can be found it’s easily accessible as well.

    Great review, Richard! Note that with most Vostok watches, you can advance the date by rotating clockwise past 12:00, than back, counter clockwise to 8:00 then clockwise past 12:00 again. This should advance the date by one day each time. It's better/ faster than going clockwise around the dial twice.

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro Год назад +3

      On my Komandierski, the reset points are at 10 and 2. Clockwise to 2, counterclockwise to 10, then clockwise past the 12 and it will advance the date. Much, much quicker than advancing the date manually per 24 hours. Also, there's a way to hack the seconds hand by pushing the crown in at an angle, which stops the seconds hand, but I don't recommend it because it could damage some internals.

    I have always been interested in Vostok and other Russian watches, since my wife took me to the Poljot factory in Moscow and bought me a dress-watch (Russian Style) when we got married . Vostok were knocking out the same watch but with a parachute, or a tank or an aircraft painted on the dial claiming these were worn by said category. Gum, and other tourist shops charged at least double (USD, EURO, but not Ruble). I love this particular watch and your video is splendid. I am still saving up for the Sturmanski mechanical chrno they still produce seeing it was worn by Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. Moscow was a world away back then in the late 90's with Yeltsin reaching rock bottom with his drinking. It was the start of my love affair with all things Russian. Thank you for this fabulous video Richard.

      I bought a Komandirskie (blue dial, 'tank' model with blue Yúri Gagarin Bund-strap) in February 1992, off a lad on a train out of Moscow City centre, for about $10 - sadly the watch was mistakenly thrown out in a recent cleaning spree 😢

    Thank you so much for this in depth video ! It is good to hear from a watchmaker that these Vostoks are NOT crap. I bought myself a vostok 2416b (not yours) some days ago and i must say i am impressed with this quality for little money. Many (not all) western brands are totally overpriced. No problem to buy another watch which is not from russia, but costs 200-300 euros more - and you have nothing better in terms of quality on you wrist. Just my 2 Cents.

In the short time I've had it since then I've had no less than five people ask me about it and tell me how much they like it and one asked where to buy it. I pointed her to the two main outlets. Wonderful analysis of this classic watch, Kind Sir. I heard from people that dive with the Komanderskie(200m-self-winding), and the Amphibia, and the bezel becomes "activated" when submerged in water. Basically the water pressure causes the bezel to lock and become immobile. Quirky, yet cleverly designed, much like its two piece case back. I love mine.

      Hi- you still a fan of Vostoks? I feel they are a bummer. I bought a Vostok Komandirskie model no34 GMT auto wind with movement 2426. It seemed like a very nice watch. I had worn the watch while playing golf and finally after about a 9 months the watch stopped while on the golf course due to shock. Anyway I thought OK I will order a new replacement and be careful and not use it while playing golf. After about 6 months the 2nd watch started loosing major time and then completely stopped. The first watch was Titanium; very cool ! I could not find Titanium at all when repurchasing; only stainless. Both watches cost about $200 (now more like $350) . I can not find a replacement movement

      @@carlcampbell6827 Hello there! I'm a fan of "my" Vostok for sure! It's from the mid 80's and I treasure it for historical and emotional reasons. I don't own new Vostoks, but I've spoken to quite a few happy owners who say that they are durable and comparatively accurate.
      I'm really sorry about your experience. I had all my four Soviet watches serviced for a relatively low sum.
      The one that needed more work was the Komandirskie "parachute" model: the watchmaker had to replace one element of the movement (can't remember which one) but for the rest it remained all original and it's still ticking.
      My Paketa just nedded some lubrication, as did my Slaba California.
      My Soviet pocket watch just needed to be opened and than closed. The watchmaker did nothing to it and it's still keeping good time today, after two years or so.
      You can have a look at my reviews.
      I'm really sorry your experience was not so satisfactory. Maybe try another watch-repair guy?

    Semi-rapid day change is to move the hands to the 12 then back to the 8 then forward again to the 12 and to redo this until you achieve the desired (or ideally just before the desired) date then advance to the correct date and time.
    Another thing about the Vostok is that they are incredibly easy to regulate for amateurs ... and as easy to mod as Seikos.

    I just finished watching this video in its entirety and wanted thank you for the honest and fair review of the Vostok Komandirskie! It could have been twice as long and kept me interested throughout. The truth is that your watch is actually closer to an Amphibia with basically the only difference being the Komandirskie dial.
    The lack of hacking and quickset date is definitely a major drawback, but can you realistically expect those features from a movement that can be obtained for $39? As for the bezel, it is meant to be bi-directional without clicks and this is even the case for the Amphibias. The only exception is a certain line of "SE" special edition versions and (I think) a certain vintage model. I saw another comment of yours stating that you might mod the watch to have a clicking bezel. I would be very interested to see this and how you plan to accomplish it.
    You may even want to try some other mods like converting a Vostok to hand-wind only with a a flat caseback. There are quite a few official and unofficial sellers of mod parts on the internet like Meranom and "favinov" that I highly recommend you take a look at. Check out a few of the mods I've done :)

      Maybe Vostok have recently changed their model specifications, I thought that the Komandirskie was a manual winder with a waterproof depth of 100m and the Amphibia was the automatic winder with a waterproof depth of 200m.
      This movement number 2416b means little to me. I wonder if it is in fact also the number of the original Amphibia automatic movement?

As you stated, no quick date change which is a bit of a pain as I do like my date to be the correct date so lots of winding. I bought before I began learning about watches. I just wanted a red watch. As I learned more, I became more impressed with the simple, but clever design.

    Richard I am late on this comment. I watched your review of this watch twice plus watched many other video reviews on this watch. Your review is the best and most comprehensive. I did indeed order a Bostoc Amphibian watch that came in today. The watch looks much better in person. The quality of the watch is amazing for the price paid. Hearing your review concerning the build quality really did convince me to try this watch brand. I even bought a second movement so I could tinker with it and learn how to service it. I bought the basic tools and supply's and have found tutorial video's to use as a guide. From what I can see, and what I have learned concerning this watch it should be a little work horse. It is amazing to me the cult following that this watch brand has but I can understand why. We are tired of Chinese copy's of other watch models. We want watches we can afford-but they must have charm and history, plus originality. Bostoc has all of this. By the way-interesting color scheme on that watch. Again, thanx.

    I'm late to the party but as far as i know, the bezel is designed like that on porpouse because the hesalite dome will expand under preassure of deep water locking the bezel in place, wich in my opinion is a very smart solution using physics in favor of the functionality of the watch. Anyway, great work.

    Many thanks for the great review. I bought the watch a month ago and it's absolutely great. On the arm, the watch runs approx. 1 minute fast in 4 Days. That is very good for this pricepoint. The bezel has also no clicks, so it should be normal for this watch. I'm very happy with this clock. I#m waitinf for your next review. Cheers.

    My fourth Vostok is in the mail as I type this. My first was a mechanical Komandirskie that I've taken apart numerous times, sanded the chrome down to the brass and put a new bezel on. The other two are Amphibias, a classic antimagnetic and a newer Radio Room automatic. I've come to love these. These are excellent watches for the price, heavily customizable, even cheaper than an invicta while exponentially classier.

    Hacking: I've seen demonstrations with the Amphibia that slight outward and backward pressure on the crown will stop the seconds hand, essentially hacking the movement.
    Others in the comments have well addressed the engineering/design choices regarding the bezel direction/tention and the semi-rapid date adjusting method.
    Great review, thanks for the content.

    I know nothing about watches, I always buy the cheapest and bin it when the battery dies. Whilst looking on eBay I was drawn to Vostok, and fancied a real 'mechanical' watch with character... I was dubious you could get a decent one for such little money, so search RUclips to look for reviews on this Vostok Komandirskie Automatic Russian wrist watch 650840. I found your review.... what a great video! I'm getting one based on your knowledge and expert review! Thank you!

    A splendid review, Comrade Perrett, and definitive I should think.
    This is a posh Kommandirskie with the same movement as an Amphibia; mine is a lowly handwinding 2414 and a somewhat different kettle of fish - a dependable item in my experience though. Somehow I've wound up with three Vostoks: a fifty year old dress watch, the Kommandirskie and an Amphibia, and what they all share is the same quality I associate with Russian cameras: they're very hard to kill. Not that I've tried, but the distinct impression is that they're designed to be pretty much user-proof. They definitely have solid, pragmatic engineer appeal, and that counts for a lot with me - well, for some watches anyway.
    The 2414 has been stable but needed regulating, but the 2416 was remarkably good out of the box and remains that way, like yours. This brand seems to polarise opinions: I like them but am not about to start jumping up and down and waving my arms about - all the same the value for money aspect does seem to be remarkable. Incidentally, you are not the only one who put a NATO strap on a Vostok and had a good smirk about it. :-)

      Comrade GenWivern2 greetings! I agree that these watches have heavy 'pragmatic engineer appeal' and its good to hear that maybe the 2416b performing so well in test was not a fluke. I am really very impressed with this movement. I think I might take one apart and shine it up and blue the screws and gold plate the rotor arm ... just for kicks! Thanks again sir! Richard

I think you will be even more impressed when you see the full performance review. Is it maybe the case that Russia mass produce what is within a whisker of a chronometer so that it's people don't have to walk around with garbage on their wrists; it crossed my mind as this may have been the general Soviet outlook... what do I know, I just fix them! Thank you sir for your feedback, it's a great watch I figure! Richard

  • @davidremillard4181
    @davidremillard4181 5 лет назад +3

    Great review! But just to be more precise regarding the bi-directional bezel, one must know that Vostoks in general do not use click stops. The bezel glides both ways and its stiffness depends on the easily adjustable wire spring underneath.
    Granted...this would be a no no when scuba diving, but a Godsend when one just wants to time activities whether long or short without having to click forever to set the starter time.
    I often use mine to time my barbecue cooking or for runs.
    All my Vostoks are great timepieces for the price.
    It's a treat when a certified Watchmaker gives them a high review mark.
    Thanks much Richard...and BTW your vids quality is superb and refined...says much about your workmanship. Cheers mate!

    Hey, there is a way to set the date much faster by setting the hour hand 3 to 4 hours back and then advancing it forward pass the 12 o'clock mark . Each time that you do that, the date advances a day. Is not as convenient as having a way to set the date like many watches, but this is a faster way. Most of the quirks of these watches are not bugs but features. You can get the non ratcheting friction bezel to be stiffer(or lighter) by adjusting the bezel ring yourself. The crown as u said is also designed that way. The acrylic domed crystal is also not just cheap and beautiful but easily polished. These really are watches to take with you to war😂 i love my vintage 2209 hand wound movement amphibia, that i just had serviced for 15pounds, and is now performing on wrist in the one digit second per day deviation range. The bracelets are mostly throwaway, other than the neptune 960 case amphibia's add on solid link and milled clasp ones. Overall amazing watches, with tons of character, if u love them for the right reason, appreciate them for what they are, they are easy to fall in love with. Cheers, great content.

    The Bezel dose act both ways and with no click just held on by a copper wire. I have about 20 Vostoks in my collection from Komandorski to Amphibia :)
    Smashing review thank you i love Vostok and have as i said i have many of them , there is no fast date set but what you can do is move the pionters past past the 8 than on to the 12 and it will advance the date.
    I usually swap out the bracelets or straps straight away as they are a bit rubbish. The Amphibia which is their divers watch is a proper diver designed for the Russian forces. They have the locking ring and compression gasket to give them a water resistance of over 200 metres. Take a look on the net they have an amazing story and history behind them. The crystal is Acrylic and dose scratch easily but most scratches can be removed with tooth paste or Pollywatch. Sorry to rabbit on but when i saw your review i was really excited thanks again ,Darren.

    The bezel is an older design and is supposed to be bi-directional with no click. Some early Squale dive watches used this method. It is one of the reasons the watch is so inexpensive. I would cost them a lot to re-tool the factory.

    Excellent review 👍
    These watches are excellent value despite some flaws over bezels and metalwork - advance date movement does feature on the more expensive models from Vostok I think along with more luminosity - the one drawback a lot of comments have picked up upon and mentioned on Vostok following Facebook pages is the date window isn't clear enough with size at the 3 pm position - it is more prominent at the 6 pm position which some watches feature - I think the bezels freely move back and forward on most of these models bearing in mind you are getting a lot of ticks for your bucks with the watch as it stands, the features missing probably would make the watch more expensive anyway - with regard to the customs duties you will get this pending on the seller you are purchasing from - it is always worth having a look at the differing sellers in Russia - one that I have purchased from will state the extra postage costs while others don't?
    Also there are sellers that give you a little extra in the price as well one for instance offers two bezels with the watch and another offers two straps - the leather straps offered with the watches are also very good and of good leather which I find supremely longer lasting to nylon straps - these watches are very retro and very collectable and for the price terrific value for money and are mechanical as opposed to battery driven quartz and that in this day and age is broaching on amazing - as the last of Manual Wind Up and Automatics really went out the door in the 1980's when Timex adopted battery quartz - so it really is a wonderment with the Vostok range - Komandirskie and Amphia
