Leipzig's Iconic Brewery: A Beer Tasting and Date Night Experience

- Recently we were able to get out for a date night and we finally went to the historic and iconic Bayerischer Bahnhof here in Leipzig. Once the oldest terminal train station in the world, it is now the home of a fantastic restaurant and brewery - and the home of one of Leipzig's best (and one of my favorite) beers - the Gose. Come with us as we taste the beers and food, enjoy the atmosphere, and spend some quality time together in our new home city.
About us: Just over one year ago, after a long time of hoping, dreaming, and planning, we sold or gave away almost everything we owned and left the United States to begin our journey with four children as an expat family. We moved to Leipzig, Germany, a beautiful city in the state of Saxony. This is our story.

Have you tried the Gose in Leipzig yet? It's definitely one of my favorites, but I'd like to know - what do you think of it? 🍺🍻
The sour and spicy beer (similar to a Belgian Wit Bier) is probably not for everyone. But if you do like it, you should also try the other Gose brewery in Leipzig: Gosenschenke "ohne Bedenken" in Gohlis. It has more like a pub atmosphere to it, backyard beergarden as well in the summertime. They also sell the Gose from Bayrischer Bahnhof. Then there is the third local Gose brand, Rittergutsgose, which you can also buy at Konsum or Edeka.
I was a bit surprised that you liked the Pale Ale more than the Pils and found the latter one more bitter. Normally, Pale Ale with its Citra hops is more bitter than a Pils. However, it seems these kind of microbreweries tend to make their Pils more like a Pale Ale (using Citra hops) in general, which I too am not a fan of.
Another local brewery for you to try would be the Ratskeller, but I think you already tried that one?
@Joachim Schwabe Thanks for the tip, we'll have to check it out (maybe when it gets warmer and we can hang out in the beergarden 😄). I assume I've had the Rittergutsgose, since I've purchased some at Konsum, but I don't remember the brand.
I was surprised about the pale ale as well, but to be honest I wouldn't order it again...just wasn't for me. And the bite of that pils was just not enjoyable. But I suppose everyone has their own tastes - not everyone would like the dark beers that I love!
We haven't been to the Ratskeller yet (we tried to go once, but they couldn't fit our family) but it is on our list of places to visit!
@@OnwardMJ Well, Saxony and Czech Republic are dark beer regions, so you must be in heaven... ;) Try other regional/local brands over Köstritzer. Like Nerchauer, available mainly at organic grocery chains (Biomare on Karli, denn's in Höfe am Brühl, Alnatura in main station). Lammsbräu from Bavaria (first organic brewery) even offers a (drinkable!) non-alcoholic dark beer.
Ratskeller has also been recommended to us many times. Recently we went there for the first time, and we were not disappointed. The menu is a bit more "classical" than Bayrischer Bahnhof, but still good quality. No convenience, they rather would take items off the menu if they cannot make it properly because of staff shortage etc.
Ah, and I forgot about "Potsdamer Braumanufaktur". Their dark beer and also the light beer is one of the best you can get in bottles (non-pasteurized, therefore short shelf life). Also available at Alnatura at Main Station.
@@joachimschwabe3301 I definitely appreciate the dark beer selection here! I'll try Nerchauer next - always looking for something new! Maybe a dark beer tasting video is in my future...🤔
Ratskeller may have to be our next date night...
We moved to this city 22 years ago and we love this city it was the best decision
Train-/Rail-inspired beer names at the old Bavarian Terminal in Leipzig:
Schaffner = ticket inspector / train conductor (historically also the steward of an estate)
Heizer = stoker / boilerman / fireman
Kuppler = train coupler
Ha! I had no idea! Can't believe I didn't even think to look those up. They haven't shown up in any of my vocabulary lessons yet! 😂
Man i have quite a story with this place...so my father and his best friend (who used to be his boss) knew the director of the restaurant since they opened. We went there a lot when i was a kid and for me this restaurant is part of my childhood. Working there as a waiter even became my first job ever in 2014. My younger brother would later follow my footsteps. Hope you enjoyed your visit!
That's awesome! We really did enjoy it, such a cool place.
That looks like an awesome datenight 😊👌
Thanks, it was!
Nice. My home city. :)
It's a great city!
Damn, now i have to open a bottle of Alt-Bier. 🍺 Grüsse aus NRW
I always pass the Bayerischer Bahnhof when I'm going to the Stadtmitte but I didn't know there is a restaurant there. Pretty cool!
We've passed by it a lot before finally going there - it's worth it!
The Haxe is so delicious there. 😊
you can hear the Quality the crunch omg
So good. Didn't quite top that Schäufele that I had in Nürnberg, but it was close.
Nice one. Just a small correction: AFAIK Bayrischer Bahnhof was not destroyed during WW2. It served as a terminal station for some trains to Zwickau until the city tunnel was built, then it got replaced by the new underground station. In fact, they even lifted and moved the whole arc in order to dig the tunnel, then moved it back.

I just stole the info from the restaurant's website 😅. It said "The Bayerischer Bahnhof was partly destroyed during air strikes of the Allied troops during the Second World War. The passenger area, the main hall, and the administration building were almost completely destroyed, yet the daily business continued." 🤔But I guess enough of it was functional for it to keep going.
That's wild that they moved the arc and then put it back. It makes sense, but I just wouldn't have thought about it. 👍
@@OnwardMJ OK, I did not know that!
"Prost" mate 😊👏👍
Prost! 🍻
Sometimes you also get calf schnitzel instand of pork . So perhaps there is the difference in the different Restaurants whwn it tastes different
Veal schnitzels are then "Wiener Schnitzel", while Wiener-style schnitzels are thinner pork schnitzels.
That makes sense. And with the other reply to your comment, I realize that we may need to remember to read the menu more closely!
@@OnwardMJ Most you get the Wiener Art in germany which is pork. It is very rare to get the veal version in germany.
