  • Germany is well known for its Kleingärten or Schrebergärten, and our family took advantage of the beautiful spring weather to see where it all started - the original historic Schrebergarten! It was an amazing evening with great food and some cool German cultural history.

    About us: At the end of July, after a long time of hoping, dreaming, and planning, we sold or gave away almost everything we owned and left the United States to begin our journey with four children as an expat family. We moved to Leipzig, Germany, a beautiful city in the state of Saxony. This is our story.

    Ha, even as a German I didn't know that the name "Schrebergarten" comes from Dr. Schreber, and that the Leipzig one was the first one! We have several here in Augsburg, too.

      That's right. Good research! And this place is so close to downtown. Also, there is a public pool with the same name right next to it, and also the Stadthafen where you can rent canoes etc., with beach bar attached (closed for reconstruction though).

    Great video, thanks a lot for sharing this. I wish our Schrebergarten would look half as nice and clean as the ones in the video. Ours is much bigger and a lot of work needs to be done before you can really enjoy it. You don't need a gym membership at all. But in the end it's worth it I think, especially if you live in bigger city and want to escape from the concrete jungle.

    • @OnwardMJ
      @OnwardMJ  2 года назад

      Thanks! I think it's a lot more rewarding to get your exercise in the garden instead of in the gym. I assume these Schrebergärten in particular because of the historic location and nature of the place have some pretty strict rules as to how nice they have to stay. And I agree, I think it's absolutely worth it to get that outdoor living space and out of the concrete jungle...

      That makes sense. I'm curious how many Kleingarten are used for food now, and not just as green space to relax? A lot of the gardens I've seen seem to be designed more as spaces to enjoy and less for food production. Maybe I just haven't seen enough of them...

      One of my all time favorite movies. I recorded it on tape off of TV, way back, and watched it I don't know how often.
      One of my favorite moments is, weirdly, when Bruno Martelli manages to trip the building's fuse with all his synthesizers, and his classical music teacher yells "Martelli, Bruno Martelli!" in a dark classroom. Because one could very clearly hear that this was not dubbed (the rest of the movie was) but was just left as is from the OV. :D

    Hey , first of all great video!
    I love how interested you and your family are in our tradtion and especially, since Im from Leipzig myself, your intrest in the "Schrebergarten". So I thought I might give some more background information about Dr. Moritz Schreber. Without a doubt the idea of "Schrebergärten" is genious, however, he has some really dark sights to his personality too. It is said that "Schreber taught his children to worship and fear him as a godlike figure. He maltreated them with various mechanical devices, tied them up, forced them into a frame that forced the children to walk bolt upright with belts and steel springs. Had these devices manufactured and sold. Beatings were already used to discipline infants". All of his own children suffered from mental illness and one son even commited suicide.
    I really think this is something everyone should know about but in my experience many people in Leipzig have no clue about that (including myself for a long time).
    I dont want to make the impression that Im against enjoying the little outdoor spaces. My family has a "Schrebergarten" as well and I LOVE IT (its where most of my parties during highschool happend) but I thought it might interest you :)
    Keep up the great work!
    Love from Leipzig!!

    • @OnwardMJ
      @OnwardMJ  2 года назад

      Thanks for sharing! Someone else had mentioned some of Dr. Schreber's other "ideas" and after looking up some of it (and you provided more than I found) it's incredibly sad some of the things he was doing. Maybe that's one of the reasons that a lot of people call them Kleingärten instead of Schrebergärten? As an American I know we have plenty of people throughout history that provided something good for society while also having some dark sides. It can always be challenging to appreciate the good contributions while still condemning the negative side of things.
