Just heard the news..funny, although my stint in The Leslie West Band was just a few months back in 1978, it was, ah, memorable to say the least. Tony A440 I saw West, Bruce And Laing at the Hollywood Palladium in "73! It was my first ever concert. Bruce's Bass playing style was a lot more busier than Pappalardi which I found annoying sometimes. Although, in studio recordings, Bruce's playing was less busy. I sometimes wonder if Bruce played one in homage to Felix Pappalardi who once produced Cream's recordings.

I bought the Flowers of Evil album when it came out. Still have it. Played the hell out of this song. Love the bass and guitar interplay between Felix and Leslie. Never saw Mountain Live, but saw the Leslie West Band at San Antonio’s Municipal Auditorium in the mid 70’s. Leslie was a legend.

@@tarasbulba3190 Back then most of the sound came from the amps on stage (the PAs were mostly just used for vocals), so the only way the sound could've really faded him out was if he walked on stage and turned his amps down.

Very very under-appreciated and they were the only knights we had at that time worthy enough to fend off those overlords from across the Pond. Our best!
The Gibson Flying 'V' he used, was modified with a P-90 in the bridge, and he removed the neck pickup- there are photos of him using it. In 1978, I played bass with him for about 8 shows. I told him my friend Nicky had his old 'V' - He called it "The Ashtray," because, he claimed, that he put cigarettes out in the empty cavity. The guitar had a gold covered humbucker installed when Nicky bought it. I worked on it a couple of times, and the neck pickup cavity was clean as a whistle...no burns whatsoever. Leslie's tone, by the way- is in his hands. I found that out at rehearsals, where he sounded just like he does here, through much smaller amps.

The back of the album cover on the "Mountain Climbing" album has a statement something like this: "This music is intended to be played LOUD". Pretty cool for about 1970.
Yes. That was on Mountain, Deep Purple and I think Alice Cooper. It read, " To be Played at full Volume". It was on the Album Jacket and on the record label itself.
Earsplitten'loud&boomer! Why I'm half deaf today. I used to get way up close & put my noggin' right inside the speakers back then. Some were made that way. Not too terribly smart on my part. Upon laying down at night, my entire body would still be rattling around due to the reverberations of the speakers. Yikes!
Leslie West , Carmine Appice !! they've had there Glory in the 60's & 70's ! but what to say about them in 2012 !!! they're still amazing , this kind of Music cannot be found in today's market , cause really , and simply , today's generation is far away from creating this excellent Tunes !
King Kor I'm not sure what live recordings you have been listening to but Leslie's tone is as warm and lovely as ever. I am of course aware that many youtube recordings of live music have been recorded on mobile (cell) phones that posses very poor microphones. His tone is, and will always be, somewhat delicious.

R.I.P. Leslie 12-23-20 :(
The back of the album cover on the "Mountain Climbing" album has a statement something like this: "This music is intended to be played LOUD". Pretty cool for about 1970.
Yes. That was on Mountain, Deep Purple and I think Alice Cooper. It read, " To be Played at full Volume". It was on the Album Jacket and on the record label itself.
@@laredolenny682 On Deep Purple's Made In Japan before The Mule you can hear Blackmore say "Can we have everything louder than everything else ?"
Made loud to be played loud
The Rolling Stones album "Let It Bleed" had "Made loud to be played loud" on the paper sleeve inside the album cover if I remember correctly.
Yikes!
Corky Laing is one underrated drummer.
Got to see him and mountain twice, awesome concerts. RIP Leslie.
I love the sound of Felix Pappalardi's Gibson EB1 Violin Shaped Bass!
I remember wanting to learn how to play guitar and wanted to play like Leslie West.
Right you are my friend! Felix was so talented. I was fortunate enough to see them with Felix, and Steve Knight.
Leslie West , Carmine Appice !! they've had there Glory in the 60's & 70's ! but what to say about them in 2012 !!! they're still amazing , this kind of Music cannot be found in today's market , cause really , and simply , today's generation is far away from creating this excellent Tunes !
he had so much more soul in his sound then than now.
I couldn't disagree more. Leslie is as good now as he has ever been . ... ..
As for his soul - it has continued to grow !
but his SOUND had more soul then Jon,now his guitar sounds like digital crap
King Kor I'm not sure what live recordings you have been listening to but Leslie's tone is as warm and lovely as ever. I am of course aware that many youtube recordings of live music have been recorded on mobile (cell) phones that posses very poor microphones. His tone is, and will always be, somewhat delicious.
jonvalinski listen, from a player's perspective, specifically mine, that line6 garbage digital processed sound he uses is not good, compared to when he used a non-digital rig. It's like comparing TV dinner to a home-cooked meal on Thanksgiving. I'm glad you can't tell the difference, when it comes to tone.
King Kor
Also, Leslie's tone never could be the same after he stopped using his (or any)
1950s Gibson Les Paul Junior, SWEETEST RAUNCHIEST tone ever!
Serious rock and roll outfit right here
