Addressing animals correctly in Japanese
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 окт 2024
- Japanese kindergarteners learn to call animals with a -san.
Elephants = ぞうさん = Zou-san
Lions = らいおんさん = Raion-san
Ants = ありさん = Ari-san
Rabbits = うさぎさん = Usagi-san
Pigs = ぶたさん = Buta-san
etc.
If you run into someone walking a dog and you want to talk about it, you shouldn't call it dog = 犬さん = Inu-san because it sounds too cold as a salutation for a family member of the other person. Some dog owners may be offended. So you should instead call the dog わんちゃん = Wanchan.
わんわん = Wanwan is the Japanese equivalent of Bow-wow, and in baby-talk, dogs are in fact called わんわん.
Similarily, cats are called にゃんちゃん= Nyanchan as often as 猫さん = Neko-san, as にゃん or にゃー are the Japanese equivalents of Meow.
Let's address animals correctly 😂.
Hi, I’m Kyota, the author of Amazon Best Sellers [Folk Tales of Japan] and [Underdogs of Japanese History].
Please check out my books at ☺️: kyotako.myport...
Giving ant's the -san because they are hard workers is one of the MOST japanese things I've ever heard lol
😂😂😂 Agreed! There is a Japanese adaptation of the fable “The Ant and the Grasshopper” in which the ant works hard and the grasshopper is a slacker, and perhaps that’s why grasshoppers don’t usually get a -san 😂
@@kyotako1372Wait, so that kg story was japanese all along? I have resd it multiple times, but didn't know it was japanese
It is not a japanese tale, it is an adaption... Should I just delete this reply?
@@AMZCH_Japanese adaptation, he said. The fable is ancient Greek, Aesop's fables have been translated into almost all languages.😊😉
@@oiseau_libre Oh thanks. Sorry, I am not well versed in rhyme history 😔

That sounds like Lloyd from Indigo Park. "Do not call me by that common name! 🦁 🎩"
Naming Lion King must have been problematic in Japan? As if they call it "Lion San" wouldn't that been a demotion from king to just san?
Yummy
@@timppaUT wouldn’t “Lion Sama” work just fine?
Nyan-chan is like calling cats "meow friend." I dig it.
It just occured to me, but is that where the Nyan Cat meme comes from?
@@OttoKreml yeah Japanese people refer to the meow sound as nyan
It's wholesome:)
"Chan" is a Japanese diminutive honorific, not the Japanese word for "friend." It's more like calling them "little meow."
@@JacobL228 In English refering to someone as "little" is often received as demeaning and calling a cat "Little Meow" would carry an implication that this particular cat's vocal utterances were small or weak in comparison to those of other cats. Also the word "diminutive" and the class of words known as "diminutives" are often used pejoratively in English. Linguistically speaking, you are perfectly accurate, but culturally speaking I think English might lack the specific word to express this particular idea. Or it could be that my current lexicon is what is lacking.
Neko-san feels like what you call a distinguished gentlecat, where as Nyan-chan would be for the baby who lets you boop the snoot.
Precisely 😂👍👍!
I deffo own a Neko-san. He's pedigree, entitled, spoilt and his nickname is 'his lairdship'. Of course, when he's being cute his nickname is 'poops' - maybe is should change that to poops-chan?
Boop the snoot is perfect. It sounds just like what you're doing when u tap their noses.
@@owieprone his lardship cats be fat these days
But what about when the distinguished gentlecat lets you boop the snoot?
I love how you say, "neko-san is okay" like you are negotiating on the cat's behalf.
😂😂😂 Neko-san needs special attention!
The cat only want Neko-sama treatment

Ōoku on Netflix sure thinks so😸
Onekosama is the only way I'd ever call my cat. Sure, he's super cute...but respect and hierarchy is of paramount importance here.. He's a cat!🤴

I just learned that in japan, they use the japanese equivalants of"woof woofs" for dogs, and cats "meow meows" and that is adorable and soul healing.
Doesn't all languages do?
In my country they are: "hau hau" and "miau"

@@kyotako1372I call wan-chan as wonton
Wan - chan = woof pet / woof friend? I don't know Japanese.
@@NotKyleChicago i don’t know much about japanese, but i don’t think -chan or -san have proper translations, at least not in english
@@NotKyleChicago -chan -san is a suffix denoting status or respect the speaker says to the recipient. Closest translation while not exactly same to putting -chan for dog is like calling it doggie or a wolf wolfy. For wanchan its more like woofie ig
If I'm not mistaken, wan and nyan are the Japanese onomatopoeias for the noises made by dogs and cats respectively.
indeed, a dog is a woofie and a cat is a meowie
Correct!
And something else I learned recently also...Cats- as beloved and revered as they were in Ancient Egypt- the name of the Cat Goddess was " Mu" like "mew"! Much respect for all life forms on Earth! ... except maybe roaches and a few others that don't deserve it!
Japanese is the only language where cats; sound is pronounced with an "N". It's "neow", not "meow"
As a Japanese American adult. I legitimately still thought that elephants are called zousan. Didn’t realize until now that the “San” wasn’t part of the actual name. Mind blown.
I always addressed the stray dogs outside my house as Inu-San. Need to change it to Wan-Chan now! 🐶

When you call them dog-chan, you're implying that all dogs are the goodest boys instead of simply your dog being the goodest boy and... no wait that tracks
That’s so cute! In Polish we use a lot of diminutives! Like even if kids know how to call a dog “Pies” they will still say “Piesek” or “Piesio” etc. Even older people do that when they want to say for example “what a cute dog” to someone, they would say “Jaki słodki PIESEK”, they can say “Pies” but it would sound a little weird. Not that cute 😊
That is adorable!! It seems like we all need these ways to express affection ☺️✨✨
Or psiak. Tak jak mój mały psiak, Fafik!
There's a whole section of "meme" RUclips videos about Polish people interacting with animals.
Usually it's cuss words, because this is the Internet. But there are cute diminutives as well.
we do this in English, too. dog becomes doggy, cat becomes kitty

I'm not trying to learn to speak Japanese, I know how difficult it truly is to learn another language and I'm hyper focused on learning the language of music in this period of my life. But im still glad this came up on the algorithm. It makes me think how our words tell alot about what we're saying but also alot about how we interpret the world itself.

I love this notion in the japanese language that the animals that live on thid planet deserve respect and should therefor be addressed with the correct honorific. It teaches children that animals are just as important as humans are.

funnily, we have somehing like this in english too! the word we currently have for "bear" is derived from a german word meaning something like "the brown one(?)", because it was believed that saying the bear's proper name would make it appear.
bear went through several different "nicknames" as the old ones seemed to "lose their power" until we arrived at bear and eventually got less superstitious
