    Oh man, the Manix 2 is so sexy but the PM2 is just an icon. I guess the question really is not which one to get, but which one to get FIRST.

    You know how it goes, after doubting for a while you decide to go with the Manix or PM2 and one month later you also purchase the other one. And then the Manix LW and a PM2 sprint run etc. I’m so lucky my wife understands ;-)

      ***** ***** I'm not really a tactical knife guy, but I know lots of folks who are happy with the PM2 as an emergency tactical knife. It really isn't huge. I find the size to be just about perfect for most applications.

    Just got my first Manix 2 in the mail a few hours ago-Love it so far. I debated for along time over the Manix vs Paramilitary. I love both designs, but I love the leaf blade shape a little bit more. Also I love the larger finger guard on the Manix. It makes me feel less likely to slip forward.

  • @0neTwo3
    @0neTwo3 9 лет назад +11

    My favorite feature of my Manix 2 is that the back of the knife handle close to the blade hasn't got the gap between the scales.
    For repetitive or hard cutting tasks the handle is MUCH more comfortable to push on. This has much to do with the ball bearing lock, as the thing filling the gap is actually the bearing block/guide.
    For me that makes the Manix 2 a pleasure to use and for me outweighs concerns about the knives weight and folded size.

    I have both the knives and I prefer the manix (I have the lightweight) it's just gripper it's lighter easier to sharpen and its very corrosion resistant the pocket clip is godly and doesn't look like hey! He has a knife in his pocket, I love the paramilitary and I love s30v but in my mind the manix is better especially the lock, the compression lock pinches me sometimes and the ball bearing is very strong

  • @patrickbenfield524

    I have the para 2 and love how slim/sleek the blade is and the compression lock is very handy compared to the liner locks on my other spydies. Also, you have to love the camo/ black blade, it looks SWEET!!

  • @gearrunner
    @gearrunner 9 лет назад +2

    Great review the Manix 2 has the best ergos of any knife I've ever owned or even held the Para 2 feels better in pocket because its more narrow and lighter if I could only buy one I go with the Para just for comfort of carry and light weight because if something isn't comfortable you will leave it at home

    I only have the PM2 and i love it. Though i might get the Manix 2 also. But i love the tip on the PM2, great piercing point. The only 2 things about the Manix that i think might not be as good would be the weight and the ball bearing lock. I've heard good things, but there is that little spring in there that over time might break? Really nothing to go wrong with the compression lock. But i think i might have to add the Manix. I just have to judge for myself. ;)

  • @130bowman
    @130bowman 9 лет назад +14

    Manix 2 better value. PM2 sells for about $ 30-40 more. Manix 2 seems like a more durable design with full liners. I think the bearing lock is more secure than the liner lock. Love the Manix2 handle design. The Manix2 and my 940 are my 2 knives that have the most pocket time.

    • @scullkrusher
      @scullkrusher 9 лет назад +3

      I believe I read from Spyderco tests the PM2 compression lock (not a liner lock) is strong than the Manix 2 cbbl. I think full liners only really help if you're doing a lot of twisting and prying. I've had two versions of the Manix 2 and sold both. I didn't like the "hump" in the spine. Made the blade too wide in pocket. The PM2 suits me better. I always wanted a 940. I got a 710 and love it.

    • @philliplee6423
      @philliplee6423 9 лет назад

      +scullkrusher Wrong. The ball bearing lock on the Manix is a more heavy duty and secure lock compared to the compression lock. Search for the video Hold Out vs. Paramilitary 2. The same tests were done in a separate video using the Manix 2 and it performed better than the PM2

    Glad I found this comparison. I've been debating on which one I'd get for my next EDC, but wanted to know about the locking systems. The PM2 compression lock seems like a more reliable system from what I can tell, but the filler on the Manix 2 is pretty beefy. And because the blade isn't resting on the ball bearing, I'd think it's just as strong. I'm leaning towards the Manix 2, and I'll probably get that one first, but I really want both... Soon enough, I suppose. Either way, thanks for the great review.

  • @LukeMorry

    people about to fight in here lol ;) Personally......FOR ME, I prefer the Manix2. I have both, and I've got both a standard and lightweight Manix2. The reason why I prefer the Manix is how it feels in hand. I can't bash either over performance because both ROCK. But as you said, it's a good thing we dont need to chose between the 2, but some people have to and all I can say to them is try to get the in hand and then you'll know. Great point for decision Scout and keep it up :d

    I ended up owning the Manix 2 first because visually it was more appealing to me between the two. Recently I acquired a Paramilitary 2 and will say that after getting used to the lock and the looks it has really grown on me. Doing the Spydie flick makes it really quick to deploy and it locks up great. The choil makes it good for fine knife work and it is comfortable to use. I like the Manix 2 as well but it does take up a lot of pocket real estate.

    I can never decide, the PM2 is lighter and smaller in my pocket, plus it has the biggest spydie hole of the knives. The Manix is heavier and feels burlyer, which is counter of what I said earlier. I dont know. Gotta buy both but I bought the PM2 first so I guess the PM2......, that's my useless opinion

    I have that blacked out manix and it is an amazing knife. Recently I've been thinking of picking up a para 2 because the manix is kind of a beast, weighs a ton and the backstrap jimping is starting to annoy me a bit. It's more of a bomb-proof hard use knife and less of an actual EDC to me.

    I just got both of these knives in the last two weeks....and I cant decide which one I like better. The Manix kind of feels better in my hand, and due to it's weight, it makes me think it's the stronger of the two knives, (Although I know that's not the case). It amazes me how light the PM is, and can be as strong as it is. Both are amazing knives!

  • @keggerous

    The manix 2 lock is too stiff and too hard to use and get a free dropping blade. I returned the manix 2 because of the weight in pocket, which was ridiculously heavy and the tight lockup.

  • @smithnjefferson

    For all round cutting the P2 satin finish feels much more adept to approaching a cut and piercing say like a blister pack. I've only had one for a month but it's been a joy to carry and use.
    The Manix 2 with the DLC coating and chrome printing is a real trophy of a knife. I carry it occasionally but mainly because it makes me feel good. It's heavy and tough but the finish would be a shame to compromise by serious hard use. The DLC seems to absorb grease and or oil and this can show, I may need to give it a scrubbing with bleach or alcohol to return uniformity to the black finish although I don't see this as a serious problem.
    For EDC and frequent use the P2 with satin finish gets my vote.
    For my ego, sense of prestige, and knowledge that I'm carrying a seriously tough and capable 3" folder this all black Manix 2 is a beauty.
    The Manix 2 lightweight with BD1 steel is more of an even match with the PM2 all round I think, the lightweight being better for price and ease of sharpening and the PM2 in S30V being better for blade toughness, edge retention and general cutting tasks. In this case I would prefer the translucent blue lightweight, for its overall simplification of construction and materials. I bought one for my son and it seems much more practical than the all black S30V version of the Manix 2.
    The translucent blue of the lightweight scales offset some the intimidation factor that may present anyone around that may have an aversion to sharp pointy objects. Heaven forbid that we make anyone feel uncomfortable as we use our tools.

    thinking of drilling out some holes in the liners on my manix 2. only downside to the manix 2 is that i wish they always had skeletonized liners from the get go. I think some of the newer models do, at least i think so. great knife especially after your finger tips callus up a little due to pulling down on the ball bearing lock. Anyone else find that your fingertips hurt after flipping the hell out of the knife at first?

    I finally have both. The Para 2 is the better knife and still probably the best folding knife of all time. The Manix 2 does outperform the Para 2 as a heavy duty knife, but the Para 2 is much more versatile. The Para 2 is a nice heritage as a collaboration with Eric and his father, but the Manix 2 has similar significant heritage as being Eric's project. I do have the S110V Manix 2 G10 and the liners are very heavily skeletonized (unlike the normal Manix 2).

    Having owned almost every sprint manix 2 and PM2 I have to say the PM2 is more comfortable for me, that being said i feel the nonskeletonized saber grund manix 2's are much more durable. Maybe it's just because i didn't give the manix enough time to break in but for me it's much more difficult to operate. That could be due to my previous exposure to the 940's axis lock. The 940 spoiled a lot of knives for me, i can't stand cold steel with there ridiculously tight triad lock.

  • @trubadyr99

    Very useful comparison video. Thank you.
    This Manix2 looks somewhat better to me, even though I am aware that Paramilitary2 is WAY more popular. I wish Manix2 was as "narrow" in its depth and as light as Paramilitary2 though. I don't think that solid liners add very much in toughness, but drilled ones would add to a lightness of a knife for sure. Heck: all my watches are housed in titanium, so... Also: there is a greater chance for the coil spring to rust in a lock of the Manix. Rather than when a lock is made out of robust stainless steel, IMO. Still: I kind of like esthetics of Manix2 better.

    I own both and love them spent a lot of time with each but I like the PM2 just a little bit more I think the manix2 is sexy MF I like the look more but the PM2 action weight and the drop shut with absolutely 0 blade play anywhere I can't not get enough of so the PM2 took my pocket.

    Both are great knives however, my fat fingers can't operate the Manix blade lock as efficiently as the PM so for me the PM wins. I would like to see a new version of the PM lightened up and slimmed down.

    When you say tactical use knife, you’re talking about using a knife for self defense right? You think it’s a good idea to carry a knife with the intention of stabbing someone? I would say if this is your line of thought, you should just leave your knives at home. Learn jiu jitsu if you need to defend yourself. Unless you want to spend time in prison that is

    Me being the rare tip down guy I went for the para and love it. Want a Manix in the collection one day and would have one already if it was quad carry but avoid tip up only knives where possible as not to confuse my carry style. I have only purchased one tip up only knife that I just couldn't say no to and I feel like with the lanyard on my tip up, which is something I don't do, I can differentiate the carry style as I pull the knife out of my pocket. If that seems the case with more in pocket every day use testing then the Manix 2 is next on my list.

    • @hnavalta
      @hnavalta 7 лет назад +1

      pete sims sorry for the late reply. I've gravitated towards the PM2 more than the manix s110v. The S110v is definitely better at edge retention, I haven't sharpen it yet. On the other hand the PM2 is more practical for me. For use and carry.
      I'm not that good at sharpening but I can put a shaving edge on the PM2. But it takes me awhile. I'm afraid to sharpen the manix lol. And for carry, it is easier to carry the PM2 mainly because of what type of pants I wear. I wear slim type pants(levi's 511) and the manix is just too wide in the pocket for me.

It also came with skeletonized liners bringing the weight down to a very acceptable 4.2 Oz. It's also 1 of the most comfortable knives I've ever held regarding the ergonomics. I do also carry a 615 mini rukus at 5.9 Oz so I'm not overly scared of the extra weight when the knife just melts into my hand as my manix 2 and mini rukus are a toss up for my most comfortable knife. I wear a large glove if this helps. Also I've been able to fondle the new Shaman and it would easily kick my manix out of my pocket in ergos if I could talk the wife into letting me buy 1.

    Both are excellent knives - I think it really comes down to personal preference, and your intended POU.

    Awesome I was hoping for this comparison. Any chance you could look at the Manix 2 vs Mini-grip? I know they aren't the same size but the lock style is similar and spyderco doesn't have a smaller ball bearing lock knife yet (with the updated design).

    Both great knives. Really want one for EDC-- not that I need another EDC knife to add to my collection of other Spydercos, Kershaws, Chris Reeve and Reate-- I'll probably buy a Para2, then a few months later get a Manix2-- that's really the best solution I think-- gotta love knives, so much easier to hide from my wife than guns!!

    It's a really hard choice.I have manix lightweight,so it obviously wins on weight.Looks,I give that to the manix-the paras handle looks to long for the blade.Locks,I have to give it to the para,although the manix lock is really good too.Cutting,I have to give it to the para,it slices better,and the point is more acute.Value for the money,the manix lightweight-at around a hundred dollars,an easy win.I happen to carry my paras more,but both are customs,and absolutely gorgeous

    I purchased an S30V G10 Manix 2 last February just after getting out of the hospital. What I noticed is that it seems to be a totally different knife from the Manix 2 LW. I love my Manix 2 G10. I seem to prefer it to any of my PM2s.

    Passed on both got the yojimbo 2 in s30v then was offered a deal on the same in s90v and boy what a treat these are. But since then I've picked up the manix 2 in s110v and am having a hard time adjusting to the lock system. It's not even close to the ease of use coming from the axis lock (BM) and then going the compression lock with my YJ2. I'm so torn on trying the Pm2 as it is a touch longer from the specs I've seen. Thoughts?

    I think it is safe to say that the PM2 is the superior knife overall. The compression lock, the lighter weight, while still being just as sturdy and "tough." I am a fan of both, but I think it's clear as day as to which one is "better" overall. Now, may not necessarily be better than any specific person. Some people prefer heavier knives. But, for EDC, lighter is (in general) better. I wouldn't fault someone for saying they prefer the Manix....but to say the Manix is superior for EDC - it's not, at least from a very broad and general perspective of knife users.

    Most folks on the Spyderco boards seem to prefer the Paramilitary 2 - but the Manix 2 is also very popular. The Manix 2 XL is a bigger Manix that does have skeletonized liners and is worth a look. There are Sprint run versions of the Manix 2 that have skeletonized liners. These are about an ounce lighter and worth it if you can find one. I have a Sprint run Manix 2 with Cruwear steel. Very happy with it.

    Hey sorry, do you have the exact name of that Manix 2? Everwhere I look the only Manix 2 with the black full flat grind is the Manix 2 XL. I want that version! Haha. Great vid, thx.

    The "lightning bolt" you are referring to is Sal Glessers'(the owner of Spyderco) makers mark ,the original designer of the Paramilitary. His son Eric helped improve the design for the second iteration. I don't think he's the nut job in this equation.

    I have both and they get pretty equal edc time. The pm2 is more fun to fidget with to me, but both knives are great all-rounders. Both mine are in s30v because I don’t think the upgraded steels are worth what they ask. S30v is plenty good enough for user knives imo.

    I got the blurple manix2 with s110v steel. Id have to drag the edge across concrete 50 times before it starts to dull. But as it is similar lock release with my old benchmade I'm partial to the ball bearing lock. Strength of a lock has never come close to being an issue. If it were I'd still be carrying a back lock. But neh

    I edc my pm2 and it performs year in year out from cutting tape and cardboard to stripping sheathing off of large wire. Also occasionally cutting a full pound hamburger in half. I carry front right hand pocket...tip up with my wallet and the thinner profile doesn't interfere. The lock has never failed and the steel is amazing at holding an edge. If I ever need to defend myself with it I would feel confident I could.

    I expected to be able to disengage the Manix lock with just the thumb like an Axis lock but you have to pull on both sides. For the weight, I prefer the Gayle Bradley 2, more blade, better materials, slimmer in pocket at about the same price.

    Great review. I've been thinking about buying a manix 2, but I wanted to see some features of it first but since covid all stores are closed an I cannot go and check them out. In this video I got all the details I wanted to know, and I've been watching many videos in which they don't give the details I wanted.
    Thanks!

    I own both and love them both equally. However, my Manix is in maxamet steel. I like that steel better. Also the manix rides smoother in the pocket somehow seems lighter and smoother when you reach into your pocket. So Manix wins for edc.

    I had a Manix2 but...it just didn't float my boat like the PM2. So I sold it and got myself a Manix2 LW. IMO a better knife - that weight is incredible.

    one other thing should have mentioned with the MANIX 2 Is the heel of the knife is slick and the handel will slip if you dont grab the clip with your fingers i have added a little scateboard tape ot the heel ot give it grip in my plam but dont understand why Spyderco didnt put jimping on the heel as they did on the bottom of the knife

    I have both of them I prefer the paramilitary 2 flipping the clip around an opening with us twist of the wrist you cannot do that with the Manix 2 so to me the paramilitary 2 is definitely a funner knife to carry besides that they're both fast to open easy to close great steel but on the paramilitary 2 I do like the steel liners inserted into the g10 looks more like and artistic built

    This for this series of videos about the Manix 2's.
    Decided to pull the trigger and bought a Manix 2. We'll see how it compares against my Delicas and my Endura...sorta wish this had the Emerson wave feature but I'm looking forward to trying that ball bearing lock.

    The ball lock is an axis lock but with more parts .
    It locks the same way .
    The manix is priced like 2x what its worth .
    Heavy for no reason .as much as it cost it should have milled liners

    I did see a zt test it didn't fail all the way but it did work a lot rougher .
    I'm pretty sure spydercos liner lock isn't as strong as zt s
